Back to the Future: Carville & Begala to join Clinton campaign

MANCHESTER, N.H. - It’s back to the future at Hillary Clinton’s campaign as some of the top advisers to former President Clinton are set to join to Hillary’s faltering campaign as early as tomorrow.Senior Clinton sources tell Fox that Hillary intends to bring in as top day-to-day advisers James Carville and Paul Begala. The campaign could also add other strategists from Clinton’s presidential years, but Carville and Begala are the biggest names and are set to join the campaign after a post-New Hampshire strategy meeting tomorrow.Carville and Begala will serve as top strategists on politics and communication and likely overshadow the current role of Mark Penn, Hillary’s senior strategist, and Patty Solis Doyle, Hillary’s current campaign manager. Top sources tell Fox Hillary won’t fire anyone but will merely seek to “enlarge” her pool of advisers. One Democratic described it as “addition by subtraction.” The subtraction won’t come in the form of lost jobs, but lost influence, meaning Carville and Begala’s strategic advise will now carry greater weight than that of the original team that devised a strategy that has led to a defeat in the Iowa caucuses and a likely defeat in tonight’s New Hampshire primary.

The Clinton team fully expects to lose New Hampshire tonight and will attempt to argue that anything less than a 10-point loss will constitute a “moral victory.” Hillary’s surrogates will try to persuade the public that if Hillary loses by less than 10 points she will have withstood the affect of Obama’s massive post-Iowa momentum — momentum, by the way, the Clinton campaign asserted as recently as Saturday did not exist. Obviously, a loss is a loss and a loss in a state the Clinton campaign guaranteed it would wn less than four days ago, any defeat is a huge blow — no matter the magnitude.

As for the future strategy, top Clinton advisers say Hillary will attempt to compete aggressively in Nevada’s Jan. 19 caucus though she expects to lose the vital endorsement of the culinary union in Las Vegas, a vital cog in the state’s Democratic machinery. Rory Reid, son of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, has urged Hillary not to give up on Nevada, arguing he can keep her competitive. Even so, Clinton’s camp has begun to reconcile itself to defeat there too.

A crucial decision, therefore, awaits the campaign on the Jan. 26 South Carolina primary. Hillary may skip the state in order to save money for the Feb. 5 primaries in more than 20 states. In essence, Hillary now finds herself having to fight a rear-guard battle until the national prmary, even though less than two weeks ago she was regarded as a nearly unbeatable national front-runner.

Financially, top advisers say the campaign has enough to carry on, with staff in all states between now and February 5th paid in full and with at least $28 million in the bank. But Hllary’s campaign hasn’t purchased TV commercials in any of the Feb. 5th states, meaning resources could prove scarce as Hillary tries to move her TV message in expensive media markets in New York, California, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Always thought Carville was a big blow-hard. Will be interesting to see if he can live up to his own hype.

This is exactly how Hillary would run her presidency (will never happen). Don’t fire anyone, just keep adding layer upon layer of government as if there is virtue in excess. Additionally, so much for CHANGE! It looks more like same old, same old! This is good for Obama.

Comment by Jason W.

Isn’t this going to present some sort of conflict with them working at CNN? Oh, I forgot, they’re the Clinton News Network anyway… Who cares about ethics?

Comment by Sam

I read on another site that if Hillary did poorly in Iowa, there would be a fight in the campaign, as Bill would want to bring in “the middle-aged, straight, white guys” who won his campaigns.

The clinton’s are getting payback for all their years of lying and spinning. They never got the message that people are sick and tired of them. They received millions upon millions from wealthy donors who want something in return. They have mistaken this for support! What are they giving the donors in exchange for all that money? That’s what I want to ask mrs. clinton.
Bin laden has said that when clinton pulled troops out of Samolia, that was his first victory over the US. If clinton had shown backbone and stood up against terrorism, we wouldn’t be in this mess. If he had not ignored the Khobar Towers attack, the lst WTC attack, the attacks on US embassies in Africa and the attack on the USS Cole we would be in this mess. Ms. Clinton was in on all the decision making to ignore terrorism during her 8 yrs. Now she claims she ‘didn’t know’ when she cast her vote for the Iraq war? She knew but she’s lying again! We don’t like her, never have, never will. Mr. Clinton sullied his legacy and the White House and totally disgraced the USA. I what lifetime do they think we want that back again? They need to revisit their own memoirs to remind themselves why they are going to lose. Now they need to claim bill clinton’s health is at risk so she can drop out of the race gracefully and get tons of “sympathy” which will restore them to their former status and wipe the loser label from their names. How sad is that?

Comment by E. Doyle

How can Hillary Clinton continue to claim to be the best agent of change when she adds advisors from the past?? With every passing day her campaign looks more like a Bill Clinton campaign, and it will become painfully obvious when we start seeing Carville on MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MTV ….

Comment by kevin

REVISITING THE CARVILLE, BEGALA SLEEZE MACHINE IS “CHANGE”???? WAKE UP!! WE ARE TIRED OF THAT CRAP.

When in doubt, the Clintons always dive for the gutter. Bringing in these two low-life dinosaurs will not help. It will only remind people of the dysfunctional soap opera Hillary presided over last time she was hanging around the Oval Office. It proves that Hillary is simply Bill’s sock puppet in this race, and not her own person at all.

Hilliary is bringing in Carville and Begalla…give me a break. So much for change. Hilliary should get out now.

Comment by George

Why not try Dracula or Frankenstein?

Hillary needs all the help she can get. It wont make a difference Obama will win the nomination. I hope Hillary does not embarass herself too much chasing Obama.

Comment by Jen

Actually, according to a reliable source… James Carville himself, he is not going to join the Clinton campaign.

Comment by Erik S.

No big surprise here. For a woman with “35 years of experience” she can’t accomplish anything on her own. She still needs her husband to bail her out and needs others to blame for her lack of critical thinking and leadership. She’s a fraud and it’s obvious. Maybe if she cries some more she might get a few more votes, it’s the only chance she has.

Comment by Googootz

Well, well, it looks like Bill’s old loyal attack dogs are back. Mr. Obama, watch your back. The old Clinton Crew is gearing up.

Critical important notes:

Mrs. Hillary is not new to the political arena
She’s got a serious issue haunted her by her husband and her family
People knew she acted up to gain the support

Conclusion:

Despites what ever happen to her political career. American people already rejected her for one simple resaon: Untruthful

Comment by G. Landis

Great reporting Major Garrett. The Clinton Campaign has already begun attacking Obama by alluding to his Kenyan roots in a backhanded manner. Bringing in the “Big Guns” of Begala and Carville won’t work, unless the American people are more easily snowed than I thought.

A candidate for change? Right…………

So on top of everything else, she has to rely on Bill’s old team because SHE could not put a winning team together on her own. Damn, is she going to use Bill’s old Cabinet too?

Comment by Chris Paynter

–The Clinton team fully expects to lose New Hampshire tonight and will attempt to argue that anything less than a 10-point loss will constitute a “moral victory.”–

Isn’t this something like Hillary saying that if Bill sleeps with less than three interns, than that’s a “moral victory”?

Comment by flo jo

this campaign is about issues. my issue with the clintons is that they ignored terrorism and can’t be trusted with out national security. bin ladin has said that his first victory over the US was when clinton pulled troops out of Samolia after the black hawk down incident. Then, the clintons ignored several terrorists attacks during their 8 yrs. this is why they won’t release WH records which probably show how mrs. clinton helped enable terrorism.
On the personal side of the campaign, we have never liked hillary, never will like hillary and am shocked that she doesn’t know that because it common knowledge that people do not like her! She was greedy in seeking the presidency almost to the point of obscenity which is why people are not supporting her. Add to this the way her husband disgraced and dishonored the White House and there is no question that there is NO WAY we’re ever, ever, ever letting them back again.

Comment by Mike

I find it most interesting that the American electorate after hearing for about a year that the Clinton Years Part III was nearly upon them has basically begun to turn its back on here. Whether or not Mr Obama is “the guy” is yet to be seen but I am heartened that the GOP may yet avoid surrendering the WH to the Dems, in particular to the Clintons.

Comment by Ruben mendoza

From my untrained nonpolitical opinion point of view, I beileve Hillary has a serious credibility problem and a millstone of a husband around her neck.

Comment by Andra Winstead Stahl

Ho Hum!!!!! Arrogance never wins. Some one should have taught her that.

Comment by Joe Marcum

Hillary makes a big deal of her experience as first lady and how that should qualify her for the top job. Why isn’t anyone asking her about all the ugliness that went on during Bill’s years as president? Is that part of the mysterious experience that her and Bill plan to bring back to the White House? Also, does she really that the public wants to have to listen to James Carville all over again?

Comment by Richard

I thought she was about change? This has the impression of retreated to the old ways….and don’tv forget Foster and Monica

Comment by Jill

This is a joke, right ? I thought she was the “inevitable ” candidate. She’s done.

Comment by dj

Isn’t it interesting how this “Candidate of Change” now brings back the the Clinton advisers of the past after all her recent preachings. Boy, that is some change for you. Obviously her campaign is in shambles and my opinion is that these two guys will take it to a new low, both in campaign ethics and in support. They are unparalleled attack dogs and play very dirty. Obama evokes the message that people want to hear and believe in, even though it lacks specifics, and he is getting visceral support, while HRC is trying to play catch-up in panic mode. Too late to change, Hillary…the horses are in the middle of the stream. All together now, sing it “Ding-Dong”!!!

Comment by Justamere10

The old may not work for Hillary because Americans want REAL change in Washington this time, not just campaign verbiage.

Try as they will to convince voters that they’re the candidate for change, it seems obvious to me that Hillary et al who are already firmly entrenched Washington insiders are NOT the ones who will make those changes.

It’s exactly that insider same old, same old “experience” that Hillary and some other candidates tout that Americans want to get rid of.

WASHINGTON CANNOT FIX WASHINGTON!

Mitt Romney makes a telling comment:

“People who have been there all their careers don’t begin to have the freedom of movement and the capacity to change Washington. They’ve got lobbyists at every elbow, the deals have been worked out in the Senate cloakrooms are just so overwhelming – the scores that have to be settled, all of the favors that have to honored. You just can’t get the job done in Washington with people that have been in Washington all their lives. So people are saying you know what? We need change.”

To me it seems perfectly clear that the most qualified outsider candidate, the one who is most likely to make real change in Washington, is Mitt Romney.

More evidence that the Clinton campaign is stuck in the past. It also speaks to her choices of staff, and her decision making. Decision making is the most important aspect of a President. The Obama Movement is off and running, and I feel a part of it. Clinton stands for CLEARLY LOST IN NINETEENNINETY’S, TRY OBAMA NOW!!!!!!

Comment by Steve McQuinn

We now see what is behind Hillary and that is Bill. She is not the women she tries to show in front of the public, strong, independant and a leader. Bill wants the White House and Hillary is being used just like all of Bill’s Girls.

The “return” of Carville and Begala will just reinforce Hillary’s image as representing the past rather than the future. It plays right into the Obama strategy.

The sooner she is eliminated from the race the better our country will be!!! I was so worried several weeks ago that she just might win the nomination. I really didn’t believe she’d ever be the next president but if enough stupid people vote for her we could be forced to endure more years of Clintonology!

Comment by Dan K

Major Garrett’s assessment of Senator Clinton’s campaign is right on. Her challenges are many, and options seem few. Attack a charismatic Senator Obama and she is seen as mean spirited, cunning and cold. Not attacking him leaves the impression she does not have an effective response to his surging momentum. Bringing in former President Clinton’s team can leave the electorate questioning who is running, Senator Clinton or her husband. Also, skipping any pending state primary or caucus is risky at best, as evidenced by Mayor Giuliani choosing to skip the Iowa caucuses, and largely skipping the New Hampshire primary - his national poll numbers plummeted as media attention focused on Governor Hukabee, and now Senator McCain and Governor Romeny.

The inevitable Democratic nominee is in serious trouble, having been crushed by the waive of the ever-more popular and likable Senator Obama. If the Clinton campaign sharpens their attack on the Senator from Illinois, they do so at their own peril, and will further damage their party’s chances of winning in November. Accentuating his relative inexperience may solidify in the electorate the need to choose the experience and leadership of a Senator McCain over Senator Obama, and at the same time would relegate Senator Clinton to the fate of the “also rans” in American presidential politics. Something unheard of just a few short weeks and months ago.

Comment by Carolyn F. Rodgers

Re: Hillary Rodham Clinton

I have waited for someone to remark upon the fact that here is this strong, independent, self-sufficient/reliant, tough feminist who seeks the Presidency. –Yet, she was not far into the campaign process before she had to call on her husband, the former President, to accompany her, then to sit on the platform with her, then to “warm up” the crowds for her, then to speak for her, then to make excuses for her, then to whine for her, then to complain to the press on her behalf and to demand special treatment from them when she began to look like the underdog. Now, she has to take on his former top campaigners on board to rescue her–this strong, independent, self-sufficient/reliant, tough feminist who seeks the Presidency of the United States of America!

Comment by Brian Peters

It’s so funny to see her cry. She is probably seen as the most heartless person in Washington and she is shedding tears. She was never liked by America when her husband was in office, this should be no surprise that she is losing. We all know those tears are fake. There is no way Joe American is going to vote for her or her antics.

Comment by Mike L

Is this what she means by “Change”

Comment by katiewithroses

So Hillary turns to Carville/Begala…2 guys whose expertise in “Slash & Burn” politics is unmatched. The only thing that surprises me is how tone deaf the Clintons have become.
Obama has wide support because he is talking about ending precisely that kind of campaigning.
With these two advising her, Super Tuesday really will be Hillary’s worst nightmare.

Comment by Arete2007

I find it extremely ironic that Clinton (herself no agent of change) is criticizing Obama for not being enough of a change all the while bringing back her husband’s advisors from his past campaign!! I’ve always felt that Hillary, sooner or later, would have to dip into the talent pool from the past. Meanwhile, IF Hillary wins, I would expect to see the same old faces that were behind her in N.H. (Albright and others) in advisory positions or cabinet positions in a HRC administration. She simply does not represent change in my mind, especially given the latest move by her campaign to bring back the old guard.

Finally, I hope the media actually holds her feet to the fire when the claim a hallow “moral victory” if the don’t lose by more than 10 points, considering they guaranteed four days ago they would win in N.H.! There is no Comeback Kid scenario here (quite frankly, while effective the first time, it was a bit lame then, too).

Comment by Jim Graham

The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome… Carville and Begala are SOS. They are stepping out in front of the Obama freight train, good bad or indifferent… What better guys to define what insanity is than these two political hacks… I believe the political hunting season on Obama just opened and they will go after not only him, but his family and anyone else that stands in the way of these people.

Comment by Bill

Be prepared for the politics of personal destruction. With Carville and Begala, you can just about guarantee the mud is going to start flying.

I can see it now. So Mr. Obama, we “heard” you were purchasing drugs. How much do you pay for cocain? Nothing?… You must get it for free. You don’t use it?… Then who are you buying it for? No one?… then why are you buying it?

No matter what the answer, he won’t win the argument. And remember, it doesn’t have to be true. It can be as simple as above.

Just shows how bad her campaign is going. We are told time and time again that we are a racist country yet look at how well Obama is doing. Or is it how bad Hillary is doing?

Comment by tedl

In a campaign for change it’s very interesting that she is returning to the good-old comfortable James/Paul robe & slippers! How do you effectively change a retread, especially one that has had a blow-out?

Comment by pmac

It doesn’t matter, these two political hacks won’t stop Obama. All they’ll do is negative attack after negative attack. You’re too late, keep up the good work Obama we’re woth you all the way….you’re the agent of change….Hillary is far from change and so is Carville and Begala. Clinton has dug herself a huge hole. Good job Barack…keep up the good work!!!

Comment by Susan

Hmmm…if she’s calling Carville back then the gloves are really off. Starting the campaigns as early as was done was not going to do her any favors and it looks like that is coming true. I thought that as the campaigns would draw on, there would be more chances for her and her team to flub up…she’s going to find it hard to admit defeat…now if they’d just get her out of the Senate.

Comment by Charlie

Good to see her squirm - she’s taken the nomination for granted, thinks the Dems will hand it to her just because she’s entitled. It’s all about power and nothing else.

I think this is a great idea. It’s about time. Hillary’s strategist, I believe, took too much for granted. Hillary was ahead in the polls at an early stage of the campaign and her campaign seemed to be coasting along. They never saw Obama slowly moving closer to her. It’s not to late in the campaign to turn this election around. I have lived in N.H. all of my life and you just can’t be complacent about an election. Always campaign as if you are behind in the polls.

Comment by Bob

The spin machine of the Clinton’s has lost it’s momentum and has lost it’s ways. I used to think that the people in this country were capable of electing Hillary, but I guess I was short sighted because they are smarter than I thought they would be. You can only be a “fake” for so long before people are wise to your games. She can thank the Schlick-Meister (Bill) for her downfall all the way back to 1992.

Comment by Publius

Carville’s coming on board? Here comes the real negative stuff!

Comment by palmer

There are two elements folks are missing — both of which President Clinton touched on when he mentioned the 15 debates in which Obama was given a pass. First, the free passes from an altogether fawning media are about to see an abrupt end. Second, Senator Clinton has been held to a double-standard. Imagine the outcry if she had gone after Obama on the fact that he’s less experienced to be president than was Dan Quayle to be vice-president. Now that Obama has opened the door to a discussion of his qualifications, perhaps we’ll have an honest discussion.

Comment by Jim

As if Hillary isn’t already disliked enough, now she brings in Carville. Yikes! Well maybe the strategy is that people will dislike him more than her ans she will look better.

So much for being an agent of change. How does she expect us to view her as someone who is going to change the course of the nation, when she is simply rehashing her husbands old cronies. Maybe she should hire Monica Lewinsky as a fashion advisor so the whole gang can reunite!

With Carville & Begala joining the Clinton team things will really “heat” up so expect the attacks to begin shortly. Poor Obama…. he’s in for a real ride.

It’s too late for Clinton. Independents are flocking to Obama and this will carry over past NH. I am for neither of them, but I am starting to see Obama as a serious threat to Republicans.
I think Rudy is the most electable against Obama. I think New York is going to be crucial in the general election and Rudy can win there easier than McCain could I believe. He’ll also get Texas, a Republican stronghold and narrowly win Florida.

Comment by Gloriana Noreika

And this move meets the definition of “Change” HOW?!!!

Seems like same old, same old. Talk about handing Obama and Edwards a fabulous stick to beat her with!! And Carville/Begala are not known for…..positive campaigns. The Clintons are soooo “90’s”.

Comment by Shannon

This clearly shows that the Clintons continuous attemp to take the country back into yester-years. I think the majority of the us are looking to moving forward; eventhough I was stong supporter of Bill during his time in office. Personally, I think Bill is began to loose creditability with Black voters.

Comment by George A. Steele

Clinton cannot spin herself out of this one. No matter where she sets the bar for her “moral victory,” the public wil see right through it. You cannot go from strutting around like you are simply awaiting your coronation and then, within days, claim to be the underdog, and have any credibility. Her whole campaign has been to say what is popular, promise the voters lots of gooddies, and proclaim to the Democrats that her election was inevitable. Now that it clearly is not, she is merely giving up whatever credibility she has left. As a Clinton, that was not a lot of credibility.

As a Republican, I would prefer Ms. Clinton as the Democrat nomine, as she would be easier to beat. She lacks the charisma of her husband, which carried him thorugh his entire term.

Comment by Independent observer

Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!

The people of Iowa saw through the blatant marketing messages of Hillary and Mitt. Now, it seems, the people of New Hampshire are going to do the same. Isn’t if refreshing? Money doesn’t buy voters. Citizens are not just pawns to be manipulated by selfish, power-hungry politicians and political party machineries. Hillary and Mitt are, thankfully, history. Long live the genuine leaders: Obama, Edwards, McCain, and Huckabee.

It’s “We, the people” all over again. The winners of the presidential election will not be a candidate but the people of America.

It my opinion it’s not a good move on Hillary’s part to bring back Bill’s bullies because people are going to see this as Hillary can’t do anything without Bill. It’s a sign of weakness and desperation.

So who’s going to be running things in the White House…..Bill or Hillary? Hillary couldn’t keep Bill from playing the field the last time they occupied the oval office so what makes her so sure she’ll be able to control him this time “IF” they get back to the White House. I truly believe that’s the one biggest thing she is up against. I truly believe the ONLY reason she is still married to Bill is because she felt she needed him and his political clout to ascertain her political ambitions (eg. the White House).

One thing is for sure though, Mr Carville will surely make things colorful with his sharp tongue and his aggressiveness as he goes after Barak Obama and his campaign. The mud slinging hasn’t even begun to fly!

Comment by Republican for Obama

Here we go, Carville and the Clintonian “Politics of Personal Destruction” back to your TV set coming soon. Time to bring in the experts to smear Obama, this adolecent “her wrote a paper about being president in grade school” stuff and “the republicans will attack his cocaine use, not us fellow democrats of course, who are currently raising the issue.” These feable attempts will give way to some really harsh professional smearing by the best smear merchants in the business, the Clintons and Carville. The same smear merchant (both Carville and Mrs. Clinton) who smeared any women brave enough to come forward to speak the truth about Mr. Clinton’s inappropriate sexual advances. Yes, it was the “vast right wing conspiracy” not truthful revalations about your husband. Seems like that would have been the appropriate time to cry.

Is this the kind of tactics we want to reward? Hillary, if your going to loose, and you probably will not, try to loose with dignity and a small tiny bit of ethics, something very foreign and unknown to you. Demonstrate that change for us, ethical behavior. That would be a huge change, one we never saw demonstrated by your husband.

If Hillary’s elected, we will all be crying paying for huge tax increases, trying to negotiate a broken healthcare system where she rewards the pharmaceutical lobbiests supporting her now, when our foreign policy is a shambles and our intelligence cabalbility further gutted by continuing her husbands folly. Just say no. Hillary isnt’ change, she isn’t experience. She hasn’t done anything worthwhile in the Senate.

We need a new direction. We need new leadership. As my shirt says “Anyone but Hillary”.

Comment by Steve

Don’t forget Monica….. she was an adviser also….. and Bill always was attnetive to her remarks… this way… Hillary can really run another “Bill”" campaign….. which means again “little will change”

Comment by Kevin

Going back to the strategists of old kind of goes against the whole “change” thing, wouldn’t ya say???

Comment by Ross Perot

I thought Hillary was the candidate for change, one can almost smell the desperation on her. Still the thought of a muslim president that will not salute the flag seems even more scarry. With all the people in this great country how come so many crappy choices on both sides. Not a single person running inspires, except maybe Ron Paul but he looks like a cartoon charachter.

SO THEY ARE GOING TO BRING THE SLEEZE BACK INTO THIS..LOL..YOU KNEW THEY WOULD, THE CLINTONS CAN NOT ACCEPT AMERICA DOES NOT NEED OR WANT THEM. WHY CAN THEY NOT JUST GO AWAY….

Comment by Sheri Westbrook

This strategic move by the Clinton campaign is another validation, that they are not really about Washington change. They will use old tactics and old faces to bully their way.

Another reason I don’t believe a word she says.

I am a registered republican, and intend on voting for Obama!

Comment by Doug

This is huge mistake. It just reaffirms what Obama has been saying about Clinton being stuck in the past, same old Washington gridlock, living in the past etc….

Comment by Aaron

Just add this tactic to the usual Clinton veneer. If she pushed aside a woman in place of a man, regardless of the strategic improvement, the perception would be that she’s not sticking to her feminist guns. If this approach is true, it is a complete hipocracy to her remarks that , because she is in the least attentive to the impact to sex and leadership and is making decisions based on that. The real story is that in recent days, she is showing her true self as a cameleon and making dramatic shifts to strategy just to get the vote. Major is dead on. Kristol is dead on. It’s all spiraling down, and it’s still the same strategy, unprincipled spare no tactic to get in the White House. The real joke is that she thinks this is all transparent to the American people!

Comment by N. T. Eller

Short of bringing in the Almighty (which we all know she would NEVER do), to assist her message, she is old news. I expect she’ll become more and more negative because who she is and what she represents are no longer stirring any hope in anyone. However, the Clinton machine will attack Obama, her money will talk, and she’ll get the votes needed on Super Tuesday. Her new team will get the credit. She, like so many of her contemporaries, are so completely out of touch with this country that what she’s being told is she doesn’t have our confidence, she doesn’t inspire us, and we don’t believe she’s an agent of change at all. She’s smart, she’s rich, and she’s going to do whatever it takes to have power, but it’s interesting watching her scramble and scrape, trodding on whomever she must.
