Questions on the Unarmed Captain and His Platoon
Continuing FOX News’ investigaton of the anecdote Sen. Barack Obama told about an Army captain who served in Afghanistan but suffered from an under-mannered platoon and inadequate equipment and was forced to cannibalize a confiscated Taliban weapon to carry out their mission, I put a series of questions to Obama’s campaign — many of them prompted by conversations I had via e-mail with Ollie North.
North suggested FOX News inquire when Obama first learned of the anecdote and if, as would be typical, if his Senate office filed a congressional inquiry with the Army liaison office on Capitol Hill and, if so, what the dispositionof that inquiry was.
The Obama campaign, through a spokesman and a senior adviser, informed FOX News of the following facts:
First, the Army captain met with Obama in the summer of 2007. It was a one-on-one meeting but the captain did not discuss the anecdote about his experience in Afghanistan and the shortage of men, equipment and parts in his mission against the Taliban.
Second, the Obama campaign learned at a staff level of the Afghanistan “anecdote” from the captain — who remains unidentified but whom FOX News has spoken with — “over the last few weeks” and developed a clear understanding of it “in recent days leading up to the debate,” according to a senior adviser. No specific date was provided. Obama then learned of the anecdote just before the Thursday debate, though again no specific date was provided.
Third, because the campaign learned of the Afghanistan “anecdote” only recently, the campaign says no congressional inquiry was initiated and therefore no documentary evidence of the anecdote or follow-up with anyone in the Defense Department is available.
Fourth, the Obama campaign cannot say when the Afghanistan “anecdote” occurred. Staff tells FOX News the captain was deployed from 2003 and into 2004 but cannot provide a date or even range of dates within which the episode that gave rise to the anecdote occurred.
Chief campaign spokesman Bill Burton provided this on-the-record statement:
“Senator Obama’s staff learned the details surrounding this deployment over the course of the last few weeks. Senator Obama and his staff have been reaching out to mid-level military officers because they are the most deployed and battle-tested in a generation, and they offer an indispensable view of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the challenges facing our military. Senator Obama met with this Army captain over the summer, but only recently learned of this particular story through his staff.
“Since this deployment took place nearly five years ago in 2003, the Senate office did not file a congressional inquiry with the Pentagon. This anecdote underscores the strain on resources for Afghanistan as a result of the invasion of Iraq, a situation that has been well documented and that should not surprise close observers of the war in Afghanistan. Senator Obama has consistently underscored the impact that the war in Iraq has had on our ability to complete the mission in Afghanistan. He introduced legislation over a year ago to end the war in Iraq, and to redeploy appropriate military resources to Afghanistan to support our efforts there. He will continue to call for more attention — including military resources — for Afghanistan, and he will provide those resources when he is commander-in-chief.”

Jake Tapper is ABC News’ Senior National Correspondent based in the network’s Washington bureau. He researched the veracity of Obama’s anecdotal story immediately following the Texas debate. According to Mr. Tapper, it is true. And he posted the results of his research in his blog on ABC News’ website called Political Punch at http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/02/from-the-fact-3.html
Attorney and former Officer of the Army, Phillip Carter reported that this was often the case in Iraq and Afghanistan, but he did not verify Obama’s exact statements. Nevertheless, his article – and the “comments” sections are also a good read, which you can find at: http://www.intel-dump.com/posts/1203696668.shtml
Obama. SHAME on you. You have no business in the Oval Office.
I’m an Army wife and have been covering this story at my blog, one of the “conservative sites” marginalized by ABC for carrying the story.
The reason there’s controversy is because those of us in military life (spouses, families as well as active duty soldiers) have not had these experiences. My husband has only been to Iraq, not Afghanistan, but the same accusations were lobbed against the Bush administration for sending troops “under-equipped” to Iraq. Those were completely false. Now, in the beginning of the war, supply lines were hit by enemy fire and took a while to get fuel and food to the troops, but that’s what happens in a war. WWII is a perfect case in point.
D-Patrick Murphy went to Iraq with my husband in 2003-04 with the 82nd ABN DIV. We knew him well. Sadly, he has turned his back on the war effort in Iraq and exaggerated at best about the under-equipped force. Murphy said this in Stars and Stripes:
The idea, like Obama’s, is that poor U.S. soldiers were sent like lambs to the slaughter into Iraq (or Afghanistan). Murphy was either being purposely or ignorantly deceitful because Humvees in the 82nd didn’t have doors nor were they supposed to. The 82nd is a rapid deployment unit and they were doorless to assure quick dismounts from the vehicle.
But Murphy misrepresented this, as he still does, because it looks like the Bush adminstration has a failed policy, which it does not.
In Afghanistan, Obama either willfully or ignorantly misled the public about the sitation in Afghanistan and CPT Anonymous’ story. U.S. troops weren’t scrounging for Taliban weapons but rather had a shortage of REPLACEMENT PARTS for BROKEN WEAPONS, according to CPT Anonymous on CNN. That’s a huge difference, one that Obama didn’t seem to want to make.
It scares me he might be our next C-in-C.
Also, The Ft. Drum unit was NOT split up because of the war in Iraq. The soldiers went through “normal reassignments and were not replaced”. Every couple/few years soldiers PCS (Permanent Change of Station) and are relocated to other bases. My family will be PCSing this summer. It’s routine. It’s what happens in the Army. CPT Anonymous had no proof that any of these soldiers went to Iraq but by mathematical deduction assumed some may have.
I’m not sure if CPT Anonymous is supposed to sit down with a political campaign as a soldier. I think it violates the Rules for Military Political Engagement. Maybe that’s why he’s remaining anonymous?
Come on lets give Obama some real questions, what would he do for the Palistinians or the Country of Isreal, how would he handle Kosovo and Serbia, better yet – how would he handle the Countries of Iran, with their nukes, how about Korea and how about Viet Nam, and how about the Pakistanis–does he actually think he can solve these problems with talking to all the muslems?
How about his church, how about his part in Muslim and how long was he a muslim and which of his parents were muslm? How long did he go to a muslim school. Did he read the Coran????
I want these answers – you should want them too.
Go GET UM FOX NEWS!… I want facts that this occured! I highly doubt that it did and this is yet another snow job to the people. This is not fair to our troops that anybody would make such claims like this about our military without more than one alledged source to back it up! this is crap Obama should hang his head in shame for not having more proof. Heck I could pose as a disgruntled Army Captain if I wanted to!
Go Hillary!…Go McCain…Heck GO Huckabee for that matter and lets not forget our newest “Dinosaur” Ralph!
An exellent post on a good blog, you can make some money with your blog, like me at http://blogmakemoney1.blogspot.com“
Just wondering why this does not get any attention fro the media people. I don’t believe his alibi. He can’t be a commander-in-cheif. People just vote for whoever is winning. Please use your own judgement. It is just because he is a new face, everything regarding Washington will be new too. Politics has been here for so long. It is how it works. And Obama cannot change this. Let us get real.
He should have his feet firmly on the ground.
Sir,
Allow me to express a response in the spirit of free-speech. The report you have presented above doesnot contradict in anyway the fact about the long history of marines sent to war ill-equiped, ill-trained and under-supplied.When Rumsfield, the then secretary of defense, was confronted by a marine captain;we all know his reply and the consequences that followed.
Yours again is not seeking the truth but undertaking another witch-hunt; and no wonder Foxnews is not well known for its objectivity nor your reporters for their accuracy but; rather for advocating the agenda of the far-right and the republican party.
The total neglect of the real war against terrorists in Afganistan was not Obama’s propagated by the Bush Administration; Obama is just a messenger out of many mesengers. Are you going to “lynch” all of them as Oreilly promise to “lynch” Mrs. Michelle Obama for expressing her views???.Then what is the difference between you and the Islamo-fascists, none???.
Was it not reported by major news media that marines were reduced to scavenging scrap metals to protect themselves from road-bombs???.
We deserve better.America deserve better and sellouts like you guys at Fox are those who stand between american victory against the war on terrorism because you are still stuck in your narrow neo-conservative blindness & exploitative,money-making everything!!!.
Major,
If this “shortage” of equipment in fact occurred, one must remember the time and situation. Afghanistan is “at the end of the world.” Can you imagine the logistics nightmare of getting a steady stream of supplies to a battle front that far from our resources? I cannot remember any situation in our military history when, at one time or another, any particular unit was not kept in constant supply. Guadalcanal comes to mind. How about the fighting during the German Ardennes offensive? Just to name two.
You and Ollie are doing good work in bringing this subject into reality.
P.S. My wife and I used to watch you every morning on America’s Voice back in the mid 1990s. We have your book. We love your concise reporting; you compose and speak like a writer. I am glad that you are with Fox. I believe you have a growing future there. Anchor of the future?
bARRACK IS A BAFOON! People are really going to vote for this guy?
buy your guns and ammo NOW, I think he’ll come knock on your door and tell you to surrender them.
So, as I’ve noted on my military blog, Obama lied to the American people and to the face of Senator Hillary Clinton. As a Soldier who has deployed, I obviously know the fallacy of Obama’s argument. If Obama and his staff really wanted to lend credence to their false claims, they release more information about the incident (ie: dates, units, etc). I’ve already provided the FACTS on my site, but I don’t think Senator Obama is interested in facts if it doesn’t help his case much.
I was listening, (accidentally), when Obama made those comments. He was sitting next to Hillary who didn’t know the difference between what he was saying and the truth. It sort of reminded me of the incident when Diane Finestein was trying to load a magazine in an M-16 backward.
The two of them combined couldn’t lead a Girl Scout troop and they think they’re qualified to be Commander in Chief.
So, in other words, we have absolutely NO evidence of this. You just have to trust us. After all, it defies everything military people know about the way deployments happen. No one seems to think it could have occurred that way, but the OBAMA said it happened and therefore it must have. Whatever. This whole election just gets crazier and crazier.
Could you please direct me to the section where FOX News investigates the anecdotes told by Republican candidates?
The candidate’s reference to this “story” is too similar to “The New York Times” blockbuster anecdotal page one trashing of John McClain.
Irresponable journalism is terrible. Serious candidates for the presidency should carry even a higher burden of veracity than journalists. The allegations by Mr. Obama should be explored by the press, and other candidates’ staffs, as well a the Congress. If found to be vacuous, then the statement by any candidate should be fair game to expose one’s fitness for office.
Why didn’t you post my comment asking for directions to FOX News’ Investigations of anecdotes told by Republican candidates? I assumed that FOX News, being fair and balanced, would also scrutinize the comments made by Republican candidates.
I guess we will never hear from CNN whether they investigated Obama’s claim that he released details of his ear-mark requests. John King stated last week he had not released these. Was John King correct? It doesn’t appear CNN or John King is interested in clarifying this issue.
Voter in TX
im not democratic but if i was i would vote for obama
I thought this site was ver imformative.thankyou
thank you this site was very informational
Perhaps the story was generated primarily from Senator Obamas need for an anti-war story rather than the need to accurately recount conditions on the ground.
Give us a name so this can be investigated
Ollie North is a TRAITOR! He help re-build Iran’s War Machine! He should still be in jail for his act of sedition!!
Also He had the audacity to call Barak Obama a “liar” the night Obama made the statement!
Who’s lying now Ollie. You as always you TRAITOR!
Gen. George Casey: “No reason to doubt” Obama’s military shortage story
Fox News is awesome. Thank you for your objective journalism covering Barack Obama. There is no present bias in your coverage. You are truly fair & balanced. I especially enjoyed the piece I just saw on TV where you “investigated” Barack Obama’s ability to unite by getting the “fair” as well as “balanced” opinion of Republican (McCain endorsing) Lindsay Graham. You really did your research. Thank you. I trust you so much. I would die for you. You probably won’t post this comment.
the captain is a obama supporter that the reason he made that false statement, the defense department should go after him. I don’t beleive obama because he said his father was telling him that was his dream he become president of U.S.A. and at the same talking he said his father divorce his mother since he was 2 yrs old and went to Africa, he never have contact with him, where is the truth, for me his not telling the truth.American people is very funny they like you they vote for you.like the media don’t like Hillary and the media sink Her “the obama mania”.
ROSE MARIE
The article says that Fox News has spoken with the Army captain. What are those accounts? Did the captain ask not to be quoted? Also; Obama referred to him as “Captain Major”. Is that accurate?
Amazing how he is going to get away with mis-leading the public on such a serious matter. This is clear evidence that he does not understand the scope of the war, the seriousness of terrorist threats and the importance of the office for which he is running.
Why am I not surprised that no formal inquiry or follow-up was completed. This is a Senator who has had the chance to prove himself in the job he was elected for but who has not had one meeting of the Senate sub committee on foreign affairs that he chairs. He offers the weak excuse that he got the committee assignment at the time he started campaigning. Please! Stories are great but action is what is needed and I think we are going to see more and more of what he has not done as the campaign moves along. As to his non support of the Iraq war–so what? He was not involved in a decisional process at that time, he hadn’t even been elected. I’m so tired of hearing that. Hindsight is 20/20. He needs to do the job as Senator that he was elected to do and prove himself first.
I am not surprised by the selective memory established, but like the death of a thousand cuts, if such “memory” is not judiciously used, there sails of the campaign will end up in tatters.
On a more interesting note, it is irresponsible for Obama not to file an congressional inquiry now, unless he believes that policy has changed to meet the need (which he can then also announce), or if the issue is still plausible, why he would want to put future soldiers at risk in order to get more campaign mileage?
Hmm. Ollie North is right. When Barack told the story, I thought it just recently happened on the campaign trail. Didn’t Barack slip and tell us after Hillary rightly confronted him that he was appointed as chair of a subcommittee on Afghanistan but hasn’t held a meeting because he was appointed right about the same time as he was launching his presidential campaign and was too busy? How come the press isn’t jumping on this as they often criticize Hillary. Why should taxpayers pay his salary when he isn’t in the Senate doing his job. I think it’s about time to scrutinize this guy.
This story sounds real fishy to many i have talked with. Since OB has had no over site meetings, it seems to me that the man (Obama)is not telling the truth, why did he just now tell this little story? I have some real uneasy feelings about Obama. If he cant have over site meetings, how can he run this great country? Just thinking out loud LOL I think as time goes by, we will be able to pen this man down and find out what the truth is about his dealins on the house and lot deal in
Chicago. Oh yea i am woundering if he will attend the trial of his friend the slum loard ?LOL
Obama wouldn’t have mentioned this if it could not be corroborated.
Obama just does not get it. What would be the point of retreating from Iraq now that we have Al Qaeda on the ropes and move them over to Afghanistan?
Would they not reconstitute themselves in Iraq and strike out at America and her allies with a new safe haven and loaded with oil riches.
Obama’s lack of experience is not yet resonating but once people see that he also lacks judgement his star will begin to descend.

Obama and NAFTA
thanks for the link,,,,,i can,t beleive this,,,,,,its redicilous,,he is f,,,liar,,,,,,
Good work, Major, on the vital issue of the Unarmed Captain and His Platoon. So far, this is the biggest issue you have against Obama. Never mind the drain on our military from Afghanistan as a result of the invasion of Iraq; never mind the lack of medical treatment for our returning military solders; keep busy, Major, with your investigation.
Senator Obama should not have spoke about the Afghanistan anecdote if it was not verifiable. If he just believe the information he got from his advisers and peopel around him, this is exactly like Presdient Bush, who brought this country to war on a defective intelligence information. We are now getting a preview of how Senator Obama will do when he will be in office, which is scary.
He should know after exposing it to millions of viewers, that it will be verified and now could not really attest to the veracity of the anecdote. This cast doubt on the veracity of the story. How can the people believe that there is truth to this Afghanistan anecdote ?
Please go here and vote yes to protect the phone company’s.
So they can protect us and our troop’s
Thanks

Canadian TV has just reported that a senior Barack Obama staffer contacted government officials there and told them basically to ignore Obama’s comments about NAFTA because it was just campaign rhetoric. Pretty amazing coming from a campaign that has been hitting NAFTA so hard. Check out this link for yourself.

Is this the biggest issue against Obama?
More of Obama’s lies. He either copies what Clinton says or makes up his own stories and lies.
It’s a little more personal than that. Obama’s spiritual mentor, Dr. Jeremiah Wright is a friend of Farrakhan’s. It was Dr. Wright’s church (of which Obama is a member) that gave Farrakhan the award. One would wonder why it is that Obama’s spiritual mentor is giving and anti-semite awards. Further, Farrakhan’s vitriol extends to whites (potential humans), Koreans, Vietnamese and others (bloodsuckers) as well as homosexuals.
I don’t know that I would have written a book that takes a quote from Dr. Wright, who once along with Farrakhan met with Qadaffi of Libya. It all seems a little strange. If this were a white candidate, I do believe that it would be fair game for the media to go after that person if he/she attended a church whose pastor had a friendship with a neo-nazi or somebody that hated blacks, gays, etc. Progressives would be disgusted with it all. In the case of Obama, it’s “no biggie”.
Whether you agree with him on policy or not, you have to respect Sen. Obama’s specificity and his analysis of the policy inplications of the Iraq war, past and present. Instead of speaking in conclusory (and often simplistic if not misleading) sound bytes, as so many others have done and continue to do, Sen. Obama speaks directly to the facts and issues with pointed analysis and a specific plan (e.g., redeploy troops throughout the region to combat al Quaeda and force the Iraqi government to act rather than continuing to count on the U.S. military to police their country).
Also, Army Chief of Staff General Casey has all but confirmed Sen. Obama’s anecdote:
“I have no reason to doubt what it is the captain said,” Casey said. “This was 2003 and 2004, almost four and a half years ago. We acknowledge and all worked together to correct the deficiencies that we saw in that period, not only in Afghanistan but in Iraq. It was a period that we worked our way through.”
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/02/26/army-chief-of-staff-no-reason-to-doubt-obamas-account-of-under-equipped-platoon/
Barak Hussien Obama has to be the worlds most accomplished scam artist I have ever seen. and his supporters are by far the most unimformed and hatefull and racist people i have ever met. Including the cracker vote comment from Bob Beckle while on the K. D. Hill show. B H O has not idea what he is talking about and is a far greater treat to the country than people care to admit.
I find it amusing that NO ONE repetitively reports all of the inconsistances in Obamas campaign like the above mentioned story and his constant distortion of the truth over and over again. And how about a few follow ups on Obamas “mentors” like that Syrian born Resko guy, the PLO leader with all the money and the other one that I can’t remember…..You had a man tell of his investigation in Obamas background. And since we’re scrutinizing McCains birth origins, how about Obamas?! I sick of hearing Obamas constant tirade of “fault finding” of everyone else but “no solutions”campaign. Anyone can be an “armchair politician”.
Recent Polling Data Shows Serious Concerns About Senator Obama’s “Electability” Over Senator McCain vs. Senator Clinton’s
By Lanny Davis, Huffington Post
I know that Senator Obama is the front-runner. But I remain concerned about his electability. I find him inspirational, attractive, articulate and very intelligent. He has run an outstanding campaign. Close friends are ardently for him. I like him.
But recent polling data confirms for me, despite all the horde of punditry proclaiming him a “phenom” with stronger general electorate appeal than Senator Clinton, that Senator Obama is very vulnerable in the general election and less likely to defeat Senator McCain than Senator Clinton. And so to all Democrats – especially those in Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania – I offer these facts and these arguments to take another look before if you believe Senator Obama is the stronger general election candidate.
In fact, many recent national polls show very little difference in head-to-head contests against Senator McCain between Senator Obama and Senator Clinton.
According to a recent Washington Post/ABC survey, about 4 out of 10 primary voting Democrats in Ohio and Texas say that Barack Obama “does not have the kind of experience” necessary to “serve as president.” This compares to Senator Clinton, who is seen by most voters as having superior experience to be president as compared to Senator Obama, even by his own supporters.
This should be an extraordinary and worrisome piece of data for all Democrats who most of all want to win back the White House in 2008. Imagine: if 40% of self-identified voters planning to participate in the Ohio and Texas Democratic primaries feel that way,
Take another look at the electability question. Let your head, not your heart, rule — Senator Clinton has taken all the shots; she has the experience to make change happen; she is less vulnerable to the Republican attack machine. She will defeat John McCain. I worry that Senator Obama may not.

What a lot of blather. If Obama becomes the democratic candidate his free ride, even with Oreilly and Hannity will come to a screeching halt. The Rebuplicans will eat him for breakfast. Obama will never stand up to the fair and balanced attacks that are going to be launched against his actions, statements and character, once Hillary is out of the way. The angry white and not so white men discussed in the Aspen Times 02-17-08 article will ensure his defeat because he has no substance and no depth and his patent disloyalty to the United States scares the dickens out of them. Obama is a demagogue the likes of which is envisioned in the provision in our Constitution permitting the Electoral college to ignore a popular majority vote.
I think he just made that up,since he is about the most unpatriotic presidential contender ever!
Attention all republicans in the Primary States soon to vote… I know it will be hard to keep the vomit down. But, vote for Hillary. This will cause the Democratic Party to continue to tear itself apart. Make a donation to McCain”””’’s campaign next week and pull the lever that says Hillary.. We””””ll thank you for taking one for the Team! Rush Limbaugh is even suggesting this. Do it.
This is nothing but the usual “Mumbo Jumbo” rhetoric that spews from the abyss.
Do you guys ever do ANYTHING that is negative about Republicans and if you do I would love to see it. Do you really think its good business to favor just one party?
I saw that debate, and didn’t Obama say that he was told by the Captain, if so he was not being truthful. So were do you go with this from here. Or is he getting another free ride, because I came on your site to complain about something else, and if I hadn’t I never would have known about this.
Thank You

The same man who wants to blow a whistle on our troops being poorly outfitted seems to like to vote against any type of funding for them. I think I now understand the saying, “Talk is cheap”.
I will take Obama serious when he uses correct grammer in his campaign slogan. He can keep pounding his hollow stump.
No details of the “anecdote” because it probably never happened, or if it did it was the usual occassional supply gliche in war rather than the usual. Afghanistan is roughly like the Mt. Henry area of Nevada, a God forbidden high mountainous desert with caves and canyons. The difficulty of getting supplies to troops in such an area is easy to understand.
Obama should have checked the story and then checked the circumstances before broadly blaming the US military for undersupplying the troops in as he implied on a large scale. Quite a generalization based on one event. Not a very scientific poll.
Obama took one isolated incident and tried to make it sound like all of our troops are under supplied. Shame on you you corrupt SOB. Did you know that Barak Hussein Obama was listed recently on Judicial Reviews “Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians” list. He was there with another odious candidate, Huckleberry! Not keeping good company BO!
Of course hes not going to discuss that the army captian, he don’t want to lose his
job even if it is the truth and I’m sure it is ,Mr.Obama has no reason to lie, hes been
the most honest canadidate in this election, hes never freed any rapists and used
childrens ads for votes, scares the pjs off me hill does .
OBAMA 08
HELLO GARRET are you off this evening as I see no POSTS ?
“under mannered”
Good grief.
Were they rude to some poor Afghan?
i can’t imagine going down range and not being properly armed and prepared for the mission. IF this situation were to exist it would be this Captain’s responsibility to report to his higher command that he is unprepared for the mission and his commands responsibility to replace this Capt. and his team with the proper number of soldiers and equipment to complete the mission.
This needs to be investigated for the safety of the soldiers and/or to get rid of leaders who are unable to satify the most basic requirements needed for a mission.
After spending 30 years in the military I find this story so far fetched that it is UNBELIEVABLE!
If this story is true then WHY hasn’t anybody come forward to corraborate this story? Because it’s not true!
Could the equipment our military uses be improved upon, almost always, otherwise defense contractors would be out of business (just like any other business that supplies stuff for people)!
I think the media should get to the bottom of this and do it quickly so who ever is not telling the truth can be exposed for the liar they really are!
Rumor, supposition…innuendo.
NO names, no places, no dates, no facts, just hot air…this is a presidential candidate?
Don’t believe the hype!
I am a retired (disabled 22 year Army SFC. I question the type and country of origin of the weapon the Taliban furnished the Cpt. to take parts from and use these parts on a US manufactured weapon? How many men were present for duty in the platoon.? Why is a Cpt. leading a platoon? Platoons normally have a 2nd or 1st Lt. What equipment was the platoon short of? What are active duty personel furnishing information to a political hack for? Someone needs to be jerked up by the short hairs for discussing problems in a combat zone of operation. They should exhaust the chair of command and if the problem is not resolved they should go to the IG. Nothing burns my Regular Army butt more than a flame 3″ high is to read about these so called problems.
