The Bourbon Room

Update: Reaction To Obama On Iraq

The Republican National Committee just released this statement in reaction to Obama’s Iraq comments in Fargo, N.D. The statement comes from RNC spokesman Alex Conant.

“There appears to be no issue that Barack Obama is not willing to reverse himself on for the sake of political expedience. Obama’s Iraq problem undermines the central premise of his candidacy and shows him to be a typical politician.”

The Bourbon Room sent Obama’s full answer to Michael O’Hanlon, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and specialist in Iraq policy, to ask if he thought Obama flip-flopped on Iraq or was at least trying to create more flexibility in his approach to timelines for troop withdrawals.

O’Hanlon kindly wrote back as follows:

“The second question was good, (please see the post below on Obama’s Iraq remarks). It forced him back to the 1-2 brigades per month formulation and the 16 month (troop withdrawal) timeline.  He didn’t quite modify it but he certainly didn’t reinforce it. And his emphasis on Iraqi stability as a guiding criterion is important and would seem to open the door more–to an extent, anyway.”

O’Hanlon, in pre-taped interview with me earlier today, described Obama’s Iraq position as “ambiguous” because it defined a hard and measurable goal of withdrawing virtually all U.S. combat brigades within 16 months while at the same time saying Obama would consult with generals on the ground in Iraq for their opinion.

O’Hanlon told me these were positions at odds with one another because he said no general in Iraq now believes all combat brigades can be removed that rapidly without a sizable lose of stability in Iraq and without risking a possible resurgence of Al Qaeda activity or insurgent-fed violence.

When O’Hanlon — who told me he would welcome a modified Obama policy on Iraq — wrote that Obama appeared to “open the door more — to an extent anyway” he was saying Obama was intentionally creating policy wriggle room to manuever on the question of hard troop withdrawal timelines.

In essence, O’Hanlon would not call it a flip-flop but a path to a possible evolution, one he predicted would inflict short-term political pain but might win Obama support from those fearful of a rigid Iraq policy indifferent to success on the ground.

We have another liberal flipflopper attempting to break the republican stronghold on the White house. The dems will never have the national support to win the election for Obama.

In response to Chris. How can you trust someone that has flipped flopped on every issue. Do you really think he is concerned about people around him? all he is doing is trying to shift gears cause he knows that the war in Iraq can’t just be turned off in 16 months. He is lying for political gains, it’s ashame that many of his supporters are too blinded by his eloquent speeches which only seem to be proving he stands for nothing.

Comment by Helloooooooooo?

What does everyone think will happen if ALL of our troops are pulled out and brought home? I think Obama has finally realized that you just can’t “pull out” and solve everything….. He realizes he was originally speak through the hole in his butt……

Obama has also decided that a mandatory service program should also be required in the U.S. now. Another flip-flop. He is changing his stance on his withdrawl from Iraq policy as well. This comes as no suprise to me.It’s only a matter of time before 1.Our country starts up a draft policy for the military or 2.That there will be a mandatory requirement that those 18-24 will have to serve 2-3 years in one of the armed forces that best suits them or that they are qualified for. This has been going around for some time now before Obama mentioned it.It was brought up by the senate before as a means to replenish our military’s shrtage of man power. They also need to put back into place the stringent requirements on those who wish to serve in the armed forces.Right now they have loosened requirements letting those with criminal records and the like to join which has proven to be nothing but trouble. You can’t have criminals serving in the armed forces nor can you have gang members doing the same.

Hey “Bob”, whenever a liberal resorts to using the “McSame” name your total post is ignored by EVERYONE who has the ability to read past a headline from Moveon.org… McCain is about as opposite of Bush in the vast majority of his stands.

The Republicans put up a centrist, you can not deny that if you bother to look at his voting record and NUMEROUS bills he passed by siding with democrats.

The democrats put up a liberal, one of the furthest left leaning ones at that. He claims to bring both sides together, but has NEVER done that…

Enjoy losing the election since you let your once great party be hijacked by the far left. Can you argue that McCain is closer in policy views to JFK than Obama?

I think it is better to have a politician that sees sometimes people change their mind, not one that thinks everything they instinctively believe is correct.

Once more information about an issue is brought forward, don’t you think you would adjust your point of view?

For example, lets take holocaust deniers as an example. Those people don’t think enough evidence existed for that factual event to have taken place. But once you present some of them with enough evidence, they begin to believe that it took place.

Thus, don’t you think it is better to have someone who exercises their right to change their mind, rather than just stay with one decision? Would it have been a good idea to be Iraqi’s in internment camps during this War in Iraq like we did to the Japanese during WWII? NOOO! And why aren’t we doing it? Because people changed their minds and saw the wrong in that.

Politicians are far from perfect and people need to stop seeing them as flawless Gods. It seems that every time a politician thinks for themselves and doesn’t side with a huge mass (of clueless individuals who view the world in one way and only one way), he is relegated!

Republicans labeled Kerry a flip flopper based on his vote for a military spending bill and then voting against it after the Bush Administration added $25 billion in corrupt “reconstruction” aid that built larger mansions for Halliburton execs. Sometimes we need our politicians to flip flop.

Of course the focus was on the flip flop and not on the actual facts.

The same is true with McCain where he said he wanted to be in Iraq for 100 years. We all know that he meant having a non-combat presence as we now have in Germany, Japan, etc… but the media and political hacks just focus on the “100 years in Iraq” concept.

Be careful when using loose facts to label someone a flip flopper. It is a lazy political tool that only weakens our democratic process.

The 16 month withdrawal timeline was always a goal, not a rigid plan. Obviously the situation in Iraq has to be consistently evaluated to develop the next milestones. If there had been absolutely no progress in Iraq over the last 6 to 12 months, withdrawing all troops on an expedited timetable may have been a viable option. Just so that this campaign doesn’t distort our views of potential future scenarios, let’s review. Progress in Iraq forcing a reevaluation of our milestones and timeline – good thing, another homeland terrorist attack that may or may not help one party or another – bad thing!

Just like the analysis said, he’s creating policy “wiggle room”. Meaning, he would like to see us get out of a war thats draining our resources, but not at the expense of the stability we have achieved. A time table is great idea for all the pressuring dem. hardliners who’s support he cant alienate, but at the same time going against the opinions and recommendations of our respected eyes on the ground is foolish. I think he knows this, and is trying to work with both…thats politics, making many people happy at the same time.

Well said, Agent655, Obama does not have the ability to bring us together because he is so extreme left. McCain has proven that he can work with both sides and will do what is best for the great people of this country, not just the liberal elite. It seems pretty clear to me. It is amazing, though, that some people are so blind that they can’t see Obama for the leftist that he is!

ok this is what pisses me off….

*Fox news is 100% one sided toward republicans and anyone who doesnt have the intelligence to recognize that shouldnt be allowed to vote

*stop throwing around terms like “flipflopping” and “appeasement” and all those other b.s. terms that make you look intelligent. all you are doing is playing the part with no substance. barack did not “flip flop” on his terms in iraq, hes being realistic and of anything you should be proud that he has changed his thoughts as the times change….. thats what this nation is founded on how the constitution changes with the times. rather than complaining of how he “flip flopped” how about you people shut up and think for a moment. isnt it better that he takes facts from his surroundings and presents new ideas based on those facts rather than blindly staying with something although the facts it was based on have changed?

*whoever said mccain is the opposite of bush is either deaf or an ignorant republican. bush HIMSELF supports mccain. mccain at first embraced it, but he has realized how high of a percentage hate president bush and he has distanced himself from him. However, he still favors staying in Iraq for “100 years” or whatever. do you want to put out some of your money for people over in the middle east because i sure know i dont want to… you can go have your sons and daughters die for another country for corrupt politicians such as bush and his croonies. they were in it for the oil and finishing what his father started.

THIS IS TO EVERYONE……. stop blindly following things as they are presented…. thats not how life works. anythign fox news channel states needs to be “decoded” into factual references rather than GOP propaganda.

someone please have the intelligence to just open you eyes and consider some of what i’ve stated above even if you disagree.

Comment by Royce

Obama can do no right.

In light of new knowledge that it’s difficult to pull 1-2 brigades from Iraq safely, Obama agrees to 1) visit Iraq to do his own assessment and 2) refine his strategy to carry out the troop withdrawal safely. Now the Republicans are attacking him for changing his position.

First of all, he is not changing his position. Flip-flopping would be if he turns around and supports the Iraq war, or decides not to withdraw the troops. Apparently those who are looking to just complain about Obama anyway can always find a way to criticize him.

If Obama is not capable of modifying his stance on issues at hand when there’s new information that would suggest a different approach, then he’d be just like Bush/McSame, who are still insisting to have the troops stay in Iraq “for 100 years if that’s what it takes”, who have been refusing to listen to the American people or even GAO recommendations.

Maybe when you guys are done foaming in the mouth with all the “flipflopping talk” you can for once understand it’s way scarier to have a President who is in a constant denial of reality and insist on his way against candid advices. McSame has done plenty of flipflopping himself. If that’s so bad then maybe you guys should vote for Nader.

One Last thing:

“he has shown us ——NO MORALS,NO VALUES,NO PRINCIPLES,NO CHARACTER,NO CLASS……”

And our current president has done such an oh-so-wonderful job of showing all these…???

Everyone, read the Declaration of Independence, we’re living under the same tyranny that we fought against Britain for. It states almost exactly the same things done to them by the British at that time that Bush is doing to us as a country today. Regardless of who it is, for gods sake get him out.

Again, no preference of candidate, just sitting and watching. But people like “Mar” should just stop talking, waste of everyone’s time and space.

Charles P. Queen: Obama never said anything about instantiating the draft again, nor has he even alluded to it… He was talking about *community* service… How is that even remotely similar to serving in the armed forces? What this country needs is more people doing good in their community, and serving that way might just give any borderline evildoers what they need to sway their thinking one way over the other when they see what kind of good that can do in a community. In addition, he’s not pushing for *mandatory* service, but rather, tying certain things to a requirement for X number of hours of community service, or Americorps, or Peace Corps, or some other program like that… Things like Pell grants, certain tax deductions, etc. may have a required number of community service hours, but nobody is talking about holding a gun to anybody’s head and forcing them to serve in any way. Get your facts straight.

Comment by Pearl Volkov

As an Obama supporter, I find it of concern that he is hedging on the plans for withdrawal of troops from Iraq. It’s like cutting off the dog’s tail a piece at a time and is counterproductive. We will wait forever for the “right time” to leave without bedlam to follow and it is becoming more and more obvious that we are not welcome in Iraq, not even by the Parliament. If there is a “lull” it is not the right time, if there is an upsurge of fighting it is not the right time. The generals in the field have to recognize that we will never “win” this battle and if it is up to them, when we do decide to leave there will be nothing left of Iraq and so can then declare “Victory”. An insane scenario.

I’m a long-time Republican who wants to see a change in the direction of our party. We need less rabid thoughtless hatefulness, and more wholesome American values.

I just don’t see how Obama is flip-flopping on this issue. He has stated his position of wanting to see our involvement in Iraq end quickly and respectfully. He has also indicated that he will listen to all parties and adjust his strategy to the circumstances. That sounds reasonable to me.

I received an email from our state GOP on Tuesday indicating that we should portray Obama as elitist and self-righteous.

Why can’t we just address the important issues?

I will definately abandon my party’s platform and candidate this time around.

it seems to me that I PREDICTED THIS DELIMA A FEW MONTHS AGO WHEN OBAMA OSAMA first made his speach about troop removal from Iraq, when are you Americans going to learn that he is just pulling your chain, he will say what he thinks you want to here, and he has been right on so far, I think it is about time you got orentated in your beliefs and not what is brainwashed into you by Obama, I will admit he is good at it, he has you fooled so far. Just think about it this way he will be the first Black to become President, quite a feat, so just thiunk about this also he will say anything to get elected, wouldent you? After he is in who cares you will not be able to do anything about it anyway and Obama knows it, but he will be president, what a feat, imagine fooling the majority of Americans into believing in him, that alone is a great victory, Hillary was the answer, experience, knowledge and determination, all that is required in a president, not a bunch of malarky. I think that there must be leeway for some shifts in policy decisions on the campaign trail. It’s easy to get all worked up because the other guy says something contrary to a previous stance. We all change our minds. Both Obama and McCain have advisors, and maybe Obama has come to realize that it is in the best interests of Iraq not to pull out as quickly as he originally stated. I am not an Obama supporter, but I would hate to see him “if” he were to get elected to waste the lives of those who gave all for the sake of political gain.

Comment by Oregon4Obama

For you people who are saying he’s Flip-FLOPPING……get real

Obama said when he first started running for president that he would not always speak on whats popular but he would “always tell you what I think”

in response to this Obama is saying that he would, not will, rethink his position and his timetable…..but only in the best interest and safety of our troops…..What is wrong with you people, the ones who say he is a liar about this, would you rather just have a person live up to their word even if it meant causing more damage? of course not, but this also means if the situation is better, he can pull more troops out more quickly……..did you think about that, or were to too filled with hate and stupidity to think…..

Oh and about flip flopping, heres a short list of mccains flipflops..

The past couple of weeks have been especially difficult when it comes to McCain flip-flops.
* McCain supported the drilling moratorium; now he’s against it.
* McCain strongly opposes a windfall-tax on oil company profits. Three weeks earlier, he was perfectly comfortable with the idea.
* McCain thought Bush’s warrantless-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.
* McCain defended “privatizing” Social Security. Now he says he’s against privatization (though he actually still supports it.)
Wait, I’m not done with the last two weeks yet….

* McCain wanted to change the Republican Party platform to protect abortion rights in cases of rape and incest. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain thought the estate tax was perfectly fair. Now he believes the opposite.
* He opposed indefinite detention of terrorist suspects. When the Supreme Court reached the same conclusion, he called it “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.”
* McCain said he would “not impose a litmus test on any nominee.” He used to promise the opposite.
And these come after these other reversals from April and May:
* McCain believes the telecoms should be forced to explain their role in the administration’s warrantless surveillance program as a condition for retroactive immunity. He used to believe the opposite.
* McCain supported storing spent nuclear fuel at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain supported moving “towards normalization of relations” with Cuba. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Hamas. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Syria. Now he believes the opposite.
* He argued the NRA should not have a role in the Republican Party’s policy making. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain supported his own lobbying-reform legislation from 1997. Now he doesn’t.
* He wanted political support from radical televangelists like John Hagee and Rod Parsley. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain supported the Lieberman/Warner legislation to combat global warming. Now he doesn’t.
And these are the flip-flops I’ve noticed earlier:
* McCain pledged in February 2008 that he would not, under any circumstances, raise taxes. Specifically, McCain was asked if he is a “‘read my lips’ candidate, no new taxes, no matter what?” referring to George H.W. Bush’s 1988 pledge. “No new taxes,” McCain responded. Two weeks later, McCain said, “I’m not making a ‘read my lips’ statement, in that I will not raise taxes.”
* McCain is both for and against a “rogue state rollback” as a focus of his foreign policy vision.
* McCain says he considered and did not consider joining John Kerry’s Democratic ticket in 2004.
* In 1998, he championed raising cigarette taxes to fund programs to cut underage smoking, insisting that it would prevent illnesses and provide resources for public health programs. Now, McCain opposes a $0.61-per-pack tax increase, won’t commit to supporting a regulation bill he’s co-sponsoring, and has hired Philip Morris’ former lobbyist as his senior campaign adviser.
* McCain has changed his economic worldview on multiple occasions.
* McCain has changed his mind about a long-term U.S. military presence in Iraq on multiple occasions.
* McCain is both for and against attacking Barack Obama over his former pastor at his former church.
* McCain believes Americans are both better and worse off than they were before Bush took office.
* McCain is both for and against earmarks for Arizona.
* McCain believes his endorsement from radical televangelist John Hagee was both a good and bad idea.
* McCain’s first mortgage plan was premised on the notion that homeowners facing foreclosure shouldn’t be “rewarded” for acting “irresponsibly.” His second mortgage plan took largely the opposite position.
* McCain vowed, if elected, to balance the federal budget by the end of his first term. Soon after, he decided he would no longer even try to reach that goal.
* In February 2008, McCain reversed course on prohibiting waterboarding.
* McCain used to champion the Law of the Sea convention, even volunteering to testify on the treaty’s behalf before a Senate committee. Now he opposes it.
* McCain was a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to illegal immigrants’ kids who graduate from high school. Now he’s against it.
* On immigration policy in general, McCain announced in February 2008 that he would vote against his own legislation.
* In 2006, McCain sponsored legislation to require grassroots lobbying coalitions to reveal their financial donors. In 2007, after receiving “feedback” on the proposal, McCain told far-right activist groups that he opposes his own measure.
* McCain said before the war in Iraq, “We will win this conflict. We will win it easily.” Four years later, McCain said he knew all along that the war in Iraq war was “probably going to be long and hard and tough.”
* McCain said he was the “greatest critic” of Rumsfeld’s failed Iraq policy. In December 2003, McCain praised the same strategy as “a mission accomplished.” In March 2004, he said, “I’m confident we’re on the right course.” In December 2005, he said, “Overall, I think a year from now, we will have made a fair amount of progress if we stay the course.”
* McCain went from saying he would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade to saying the exact opposite.
* McCain went from saying gay marriage should be allowed, to saying gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed.
* McCain criticized TV preacher Jerry Falwell as “an agent of intolerance” in 2002, but then decided to cozy up to the man who said Americans “deserved” the 9/11 attacks.
* McCain used to oppose Bush’s tax cuts for the very wealthy, but he reversed course in February.
* On a related note, he said 2005 that he opposed the tax cuts because they were “too tilted to the wealthy.” By 2007, he denied ever having said this, and insisted he opposed the cuts because of increased government spending.
* In 2000, McCain accused Texas businessmen Sam and Charles Wyly of being corrupt, spending “dirty money” to help finance Bush’s presidential campaign. McCain not only filed a complaint against the Wylys for allegedly violating campaign finance law, he also lashed out at them publicly. In April, McCain reached out to the Wylys for support.
* McCain supported a major campaign-finance reform measure that bore his name. In June 2007, he abandoned his own legislation.
* McCain opposed a holiday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr., before he supported it.
* McCain was against presidential candidates campaigning at Bob Jones University before he was for it.
* McCain was anti-ethanol. Now he’s pro-ethanol.
* McCain was both for and against state promotion of the Confederate flag.
 McCain decided in 2000 that he didn’t want anything to do with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, believing he “would taint the image of the ‘Straight Talk Express.’” Kissinger is now the Honorary Co-Chair for his presidential campaign in New York.

The RNC and the McCain camp keep pointing on the fact that Obama voted to raise taxes 94 times….But here’s the TRUTH behind it
After looking at every one of the 94 votes that the RNC includes in its tally, we find:
 Twenty-three were for measures that would have produced no tax increase at all; they were against proposed tax cuts.
 Seven of the votes were in favor of measures that would have lowered taxes for many, while raising them on a relative few, either corporations or affluent individuals.
 Eleven votes the GOP is counting would have increased taxes on those making more than $1 million a year – in order to fund programs such as Head Start and school nutrition programs, or veterans’ health care.
 The GOP sometimes counted two, three and even four votes on the same measure. We found their tally included a total of 17 votes on seven measures, effectively padding their total by 10.
 The majority of the 94 votes – 53 of them, including some mentioned above – were on budget measures, not tax bills, and would not have resulted in any tax change. Four other votes were non-binding motions related to conference report negotiations.

I find these comments completely exasperating. Almost no one shows any sign of having an open mind. For god’s sake, don’t just spout the same crap that’s spewing out of every orafice of every newscaster. I don’t care what candidate you stand for, they’re both decent people trying to serve their country. They’re both politicians, as well. The demonization — and even the evangelizing — is unhelpful.

Why is it so hard for people to be civil while discussing politics? I think I’ll write a comment.

By the way, McCain is Satan, but Obama is the devil. Now you know.

Extreme left? EXTREME LEFT? Obama, and ALL the serious candidates fall to the right of the rest of the world. “Left” is a joke in the US, there is no real left here, and those few that happen to fall there are labeled nutjobs. Meanwhile, the real left in other countries would put our democrats to shame. And these are the countries that take care of their citizens, and the government is afraid of the people, as it should be.

Your man-on-the-street republican has been fooled too long into believing that the right has their best interest at heart. Meanwhile they rape and pillage your future, and your children’s future. The “tax and spend” democrats would be a welcome change from “don’t tax and spend” republicans that are going to burden your children, and your children’s children with debt they can’t pay, all while ensuring they are forced into working at the likes of walmart for generations, to pad the wallet of their corporate pals. All because you’ve been tricked into believing their false pretext about family values while they’re outback having their way with your wives and daughters (and sometimes husbands and sons!).

WAKE UP! You’ve been used! You’ve been had!

Where is the “change”!!!!!!! Where is the “change”!!!!! Where is the “change”. My “Black Messiah”, where is the “change”?????? All the minnions are crying for “change” however, you want to give us a “Black George Bush”.

The only reason anyone will vote for Obama, is they hate the Republican party (not necessarily John Mcain)

No republican is going to change Ranks to vote for Obama, but Mcain is middle of the road, not extreme right wing. The right wing Republicans might not vote at all.

Whats with the Dems going so far out in Left field for their candidates…Clinton as much as I couldn’t stand her at least stood for something.

After the Swift Boat tactic, it is important to verify statements from everyone including the RNC. For example, Newsweek did a detailed analysis of the RNC’s statement on Obama’s tax voting record and found the RNC’s statement incorrect and totally misleading. There is a lot of misinformation being published, so it’s really important to know your source and verify the facts before swallowing the statements.

We’re going to see the Republicons grasping at a lot of straws over the next four months. Take this one for example. Obama sets a goal to be out of Iraq in 16 months, but says that he’ll be sure to listen to the generals about the situation on the ground. To someone grasping at straws, this is a “flip flop.” To any objective, reasonable person, Obama’s stance makes perfect sense and shows that he is a responsible leader. Obama is going to do his best to get our troops home within the 16 month goal, but if the commanders on the ground say that the facts have changed so that it can’t be done safely, then it may take longer. This shows that Obama cares about our troops, and wants to bring them home as safely as possible, unlike Bush/Cheney who sent our troops to war under false pretenses.

In reality, this story only proves how much better and more responsible a leader Obama is than the Bush/Cheney team. For the Bush/Cheney team, they say they’re going to do something, and do it, NO MATTER WHAT THE CONSEQUENCES ARE! Obama is smart and responsible enough to pay attention to the consequences and do his best to minimize the risks. Hence, he’s willing to adapt so that things are done the best way possible at that point in time. Somehow, for the perverted mind of a Republicon, this is a bad thing, which is why our country is in such a mess in the first place.

One can see the inherent rabidity in the Republicon mindset by just listening to the Republicon leaders. Obama takes a responsible position, one supported by the majority of the American People, and the Republicons distort it to the following:

“There appears to be no issue that Barack Obama is not willing to reverse himself on for the sake of political expedience. Obama’s Iraq problem undermines the central premise of his candidacy and shows him to be a typical politician.” RNC spokesman Alex Conant

Alex Conant, you clearly need a good ‘ol fashioned butt-whoopin. Protecting our troops is not “political expedience.” Setting a goal of bringing our troops home and doing our best to meet it while taking into account the reality on the ground is not a “reversal.” If only it were so “typical” for our President to take all sides of an issue into account when making decisions. And for your information, its not “Obama’s Iraq problem.” It’s EVERYONE’S problem … thanks to you and your kind. God willing, Obama will be the one to solve it.

Obama is FAKE. He wants to win and he will say what the voters in want to hear depending on where he speaks. First Gun control, next Faith, next charities, next volunteerism and now Iraq war. Is he trying to prove he is not the extreme liberal but middle and moderate. I tell you he is a cunning fox in sheep skin. Watch out GOP he is slowly pulling the rug under your feet

It’s called GOOD leadership. That whole sticking to your guns even when you’re wrong only works in high school. Can you imagine what would happen to a company if a CEO never altered course?

Obama is just a different wing of the same evil bird, but one way or another, someone has to fix the mess your government has made in Iraq with your predatory ways.

At least he seems the lesser of two evils – your Bomb bomb bomb Iran McCain is a scary madman, determined to keep your industrial/military complex profitable at all costs, as it is so vital to your US economy. War=business.

I am sick of Iraq, we should of just bombed the place and let them rebuild themselves. If any special interest group want to continue the war in Iraq then let them pay for it.

America should also be more focused on rebuilding all of the failed and failing levees in the MidWest, before investing and rebuilding in any foreign country.

Intelligent people modify their opinions and can change their responses as needed with more information and fluidity. Why do people think that stubborn inflexibility is a good thing is what I would like to know? That’s pretty much why we are in ALL the messes we are today!

Comment by Bill Trout

According to some people, anyone who doesn’t walk over a cliff because it’s in his way is a flip-floper. Why don’t these people realize the administration’s refusal to look at reality is what’s been leading us over this cliff all along?

Normal people look at the facts and make decisions. Cheney and his millionaire buddies want you to keep your blinders on and act on their crazies ideas alone, refusing to acknoweldge reality. Don’t be dumb. I’ll be honest…four fifths of the people on here are working for someone (from either party) spreading propaganda. I’m just a normal guy who’s had enough of people refusing to listen to common sense.

What utter BS to keep people confused. “Loss of stability if we go”, you mean we will loose our foothold on that oil, and there is NO WAY that is going to happen. Wake up america, we are NEVER coming home. Not with obama not with mccain, not with ANYBODY. Those politicians are puppets that carry out policy of the giant powers. Period. No democracy anywhere in sight, not in iraq, not in america. We invaded, installed a puppet “government” tat has “invited” us to stay permanently and has just signed over 85% of the oil rights to the same four oil corporations that Saddam had the cohones to throw out. Mobil Exxon, Chevron, BP Total. When are you going to wake up and stop letting these media shills feed you garbage propaganda. WAKE UP, it’s very late in the game.

i agree with Davis_Res but i mean, come on! why didnt he see the truth in the first place? if anyone has forgotten, the prime minister wants us to get the heck out of there!!!! if its neccessary, then we should stay, but not forever! i highly doubt we are really helping them anymore.

Sure, he’s right to be more flexible now, and it makes sense to try and get some “wiggle room” now. It also would have made sense not to take such a stiff, uncompromising position on the matter earlier (that is, aside from a need to get war-weary voters to jump on the bandwagon).

I sincerely like a few things Obama has said. But he’s dropped his pants more than a few times too. What I’d respect is somebody saying “I may have been hasty…” , or “my opponent might have a point there, though I don’t agree completely..” , but you don’t hear that too often. Usually it’s “my comments were taken out of context” or “that has been my position all along”. Obama sure isn’t the only one to have done it, but he doesn’t have any room to point fingers either.
