Obama: Brandenburg Speech Presumptuous
The Obama campaign, confirming in part early reports out of Berlin, said the senator will not speak at the Brandenburg Gate, despite earlier inquiries about its availability as a backdrop for a significant speech on the trans-Atlantic relations. German Chancellor Angela Merkel onced termed the request “a bit odd.”
The announcement came in an on-the-record conference call that for the first time announced the countries Obama will visit, in addition to the previously announced congressional delegation visit to Afghanistan and Iraq (though not necessarily in that order) with Sens. Jack Reed, D-R.I., and Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. The other nations on Obama’s itinerary are: Jordan, Israel, a trip to the Palestinian Territories (loation to be determined, but not Gaza), Germany, France and Great Britain.
Here is the verbatim take on the Brandenburg Gate issue from Dennis McDonough, a top Obama foreign policy coordinator and adviser, and senior communications adviser and counselor, Robert Gibbs.
Dennis McDonough:
“We are looking at a variety of locations in Germany and will pick one that we believe meets our needs and also the needs of our German hosts, the interests of our German hosts. The one thing that Barack made clear to us very early is that he didn’t think it made sense at all for him to speak at the Brandenburg Gate which he thought would be, perhaps, too presumptuous. But other than that we are looking at a variety of locations and Sen. Obama will choose one that meets both his goals and also the goals of our German hosts.”
Robert Gibbs:
“Well, there is no precedent for that (a candidate speech at the Brandenburg Gate) and that is not what we are doing. The speech in Berlin will be a substantive speech about American and European relations. The trip is not at all a campaign trip — a rally of any sort. As Dennis (McDonough) just outlined, it’s a series of substantive meetings with our friends and our allies to talk about the common challenges that we face and the national security dangers for the 21st century.”
The campaign also announced the leaders Obama will meet on this trip:
In Jordan, King Abdullah.
In Israel, Prime Miniseter Ehud Olmert, President Shimon Peres, Defense Minister and Labour Party Leader Ehud Barak, Likud Party leader Benjamin Netanyahu.
In the Palestinian Territories, Fatah Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), and Paletstinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.
In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
In France, President Nicolas Sarkozy.
In Great Britain, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Tory leader David Cameron.

I live 20 miles North of New York City and I haven’t seen or heard a word in my local region of a campaign stop by this ‘Presumptive Camaigner’. I just defies reason that his handlers haven’t let some local Democrats at least ‘get a little face time’ with him before sending him to Europe.
Why would any one want any face time with him? I’ve seen him too much already. He’s on, t.v.s off.
Rock star status?
Does ‘Billo the Klown’ do weddings and/or parties? How much does he charge?
Thank You

Not only presumptuous but also outragous.
This man is so power hungry and ego driven that it is sickening.
Obama’s focus should be on Iraq and Afghanistan and yet all we have heard so far is this big speech he wants to give in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
I am glad that the german chancellor Angela Merkel rebuked him and called it an inappropiate request for political candidates , especially from foreign countries , to use this historic site for ralleys and campaigning .
It is high time for Obama to come down from cloud nine and put his feet back on the ground , he has had an unbelievable free ride from the media and press and nobody has questioned his lies and flip flopping , hence his increasing arrogance and egocentric behaviour.
I hope that he will not become your next President.
I am tired of speeches.
Show me something that Obama has done.
What did he do as a community organizer, what did he do as a state senator and what did he do as a US Senator?
So far all I heard is he wrote books about himself, he made a good speech, associated with Pastor Wright (God Damn America) and bought his house with the help of onvicted Rezko. These are not good qualification of becoming a President.
McCain paid his dues and served this country.
I wonder if his speech will be by torch light, will he be wearing an Obama arm band and will he be speaking in German????? After all we don’t want to be ashamed of Herr. Obama not being able to speak another language do we. I think something like this has happened before the year was 1930……
The right wingers are starting to sound desperate. With an Electoral College landslide coming in November, and with 87% of the nation no longer supporting right wing views and the direction that it takes this country, you are all members of an ever shrinking crowd. Oh, my bad, not even big enough to be called a crowd anymore. But when you are on the wrong side of all the issues and you do not have anything else to offer, you resort to name calling and insults. It’s embarassing. I feel sory for you guys.
