Obama Looks Forward, Sees Foreign Policy Path Strewn With McCain Mistakes

LONDON — 2:30 AM LOCAL TIME

There’s a heady feeling in the upper reaches of Barack Obama’s campaign, but not because of what the freshman senator has accomplished in an eight-day trip nearly around the world.

Yes, senior Obama officials believe, Obama acquitted himself ably in a trip that they divide into three component parts: war, peace, and trans-Atlantic aspirations.

They assert Obama navigated Afghanistan and Iraq well, drawing new-found emphasis on the need for more US and NATO troops there — even winning the unqualified commitment from French President Nicolas  Sarkozy for Europe to step up to the plate in that theatre of conflict.

Obama officials also say the push from Iraqi politicians for troop withdrawal schedules roughly in line with his (with the exception of Sunni chieftains who still fret about a rapid US exit). The language of “aspiration time horizons” agreed upon by Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki and the Bush White House also gave Obama a glide-path in Iraq on the question of troop movements and nothing on they trip, they believe undercut that opening advantage

In Europe, Obama drew a huge crowd in Berlin and ebullient praise from Sarkozy.

Obama aides expect smooth-sailing here in Britain as the politically floundering Prime Minister Gordon Brown may well try to bask in the glow of Obama, a mere candidate for high office as Brown struggles against sagging poll numbers and recent election setbacks.

“The trip spotlights Obama’s judgment, skill and expertise in navigating very difficult foreign policy, national security issues,” a top Obama hand said. “It shows also how he has a strong team around him but how he clearly leads and sets direction.”

All this feels good in the upper reaches of the Obama brain trust.

But that’s not what has spirits so high in the Hyatt Regency Churchill hotel with an elegant bronze bust of Sir Winston in its wide, marble-floored and high-ceiling lobby.

What has them so enthused in what can only be described as a series of self-inflicted wounds on what before this week was indisputably John McCain’s strongest suit – his ability to talk persuasively about the way to win the war on terror in the twin battles of Iraq and Afghanistan.

McCain made several errors this week in matters fundamental to understanding how and when both wars began and finished the week coming within a hair of embracing Obama’s 16-month timetable for US troop withdrawals.

In the kinetic world of instant blog posts and furious back-and-forth between campaigns fighting like terriers on steroids over every miscue – real or imagined – it is sometimes hard to measure the damage done over the course of a week.

The Obama’s inner circle, they believe McCain set himself back not only with the general public but also with top-flight Republicans who will have to try to clean up McCain’s national security debris.

Here is what team Obama means.

* On July 21st, McCain said on Good Morning America that the situation was tough in Afghanistan, particularly, he said, “given the struggle on the Iraq-Pakistan border.”

* On July 22 in an interview Katie Couric of CBS, McCain said the troop surge President Bush ordered in January 2007 and which didn’t reach maximum tactical deployment for months after led to the so-called Sunni awakening or uprising against Al Qaeda in Iraq terrorists. While the surge no doubt gave greater confidence to Sunnis over time, the awakening began in the fall of 2006 with the moves against AI Qaeda by a collection of high-profile tribal sheiks.

* On July 23, McCain said the surge wasn’t really about more troops, but counter-insurgency tactics. And yet the political credit McCain seeks for the turn-around in Iraq is based principally on his advocacy if the surge – meaning more troops to carry out counter-insurgency missions. To say the surge wasn’t really about more troops undercuts much of McCain has tried to tell the public about what has changed in Iraq and why.

* On July 24th, McCain called Iraq “the first major conflict since 9/11.” Tell that to Hamid Karzai, current President of Afghanistan and brought to power by the US-led defeat of the Taliban in the months immediately following 9/11.

* And Friday on CNN, McCain said 16 months for a troop withdrawal from Iraq is “a pretty good timetable.” His campaign said McCain meant it was good so long as conditions on the ground warranted troop withdrawals. But the damage was done. Just check the profusion of blog posts in the hours immediately after the CNN interview with McCain.

The Obama campaign and the DNC is preparing an easy-to-follow guide to these McCain fumbles to assist any and all Obama surrogates in the coming debate over national security, Iraq or Afghanistan. Contrasting one or more of these against McCain’s contention that he alone “knows how to win wars” is likely to become a familiar TV jousting tactic.

The Obama camp believes, whether it’s true or not, that the massive publicity the senator’s trip inspired rattled and frustrated McCain.

The Obama team knew McCain and his allies would sift every word, gesture and footstep on the world stage for any blunder. Obama’s team believes the senator made no clear-cut mistakes and that McCain did, meaning they turned the tables at a time when McCain and the GOP were hoping for Obama to stumble.

“Some people watched the trip from sidelines waiting for a big mistake or a diplomatic blunder” said a senior Obama adviser. “It didn’t happen, frustrating the McCain camp which then escalated their rhetoric and lobbed increasingly desperate attacks.”

All of this is, of course, largely tactical and subject to interpretation. Polling data this week from Fox and Gallup showed little or no “bounce” for Obama and Quinnipiac surveys in key battleground states revealed some tightening of the race in McCain’s favor.

But Obama’s crew believes they earned points in their own right and McCain cost himself points that will take time and effort to win back as the national security and foreign policy debate continues.

Barak did not vote for the war BECAUSE he could not vote. ALL that matters is that the SURGE worked and that is good for us. The public knows McCain pushed for the surge and they trust him for our future. We are still unsure about Barak. All the talking heads in the world can not change the facts. History doesn’t lie although it takes time to be interpreted. We citizens may not all be masters graduates but we can use our common sense. McCain is common sense.

Is this an editorial? My first impression was that it was an article but after reading it, it is clearly Anti-McCain propoganda and Pro-Obama rhetoric. Is there not any fair and unbiased news any more?

The contrast between the organizational framework of the two campaigns was never more apparent than last week. With the exception of being blindsided by the military over visiting the troops in Berlin, the Obama camp pulled off an amazing feat of planning and advance work. Their stagecraft was impeccable, framing Senator Obama perfectly in each setting. Contrast this with a confused looking Senator McCain, standing in front of the cheese display, to give a rambling discourse on the rising price of food. As noted in your article, one of the best I’ve seen written by a Fox correspondent, his foreign policy statements were a mismanaged jumble of contradictions. When a reporter sought a response from Senator Obama over one of McCain’s attacks, he simply called it “unfortunate.” The difference made McCain look desperate, and Obama very “presidential” and in control of the situation. I differ slightly over the polling numbers. The daily Gallup tracking poll narrative stated “The evidence is certainly mixed at this point as to which of these scenarios may end up being closest to reality. Obama’s 6-point lead over the past weekend initially suggested that he was perhaps on the cusp of a jump in support as a result of (or at the least coincident with) his trip.” In other words, time will tell.

I’ve been following obama’s trip and noticed numerous gasps and miss steps, but none reported.he appears to look like a student who went all semester and didn’t pay attention and now has to cram his studys for a final.

Graduating fifth from the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy fits the fact that it’s the undisciplined — not the bright — who become mavericks to make up for their lack of performance.

Lack of performance carried over in Nam where he got shot down by a SA-2 missile which competent fighter pilots had no trouble outmaneuvering.

McCain’s continuing blunders cause me concern about his ability to deal with the red phone ringing, not at 3 AM, but even at 3 PM.

Both candidates have had their share of goofs. Irregardless, Who is in Europe and who is in USA. ?? I rest my case

Comment by Ray Bisque

Obama seems focused on drama. He will have to deal with foreign leaders if he is elected but this grandstanding does not set well with the folks who are interested in domestic issues. I’m afraid that the “rock star” image is setting in.

This is just great it isn’t bad enough that the entire press corps is having fantasies about Obama as president, now even a reliable source of balance like Fox is drinking the Kool Aid. Just send Garrett over to MSNBC now. It is obviously impossible to get him out of the Obama trance, too much time there,

This is the first objective analysis I have read on Fox…you guyz appear to be better than National Enquirer afterall.

Does anyone proofread these things before they go out? This article is barely legible.

What they “believe” doesn’t matter. Polls show that McCain got the bump. This piece was a complex attempt at spinning some very subtle (and maybe non-existant) errors on McCains part. If Obama doesn’t rebound quickly, his staffg will go on defense. HOPE they are careful in how they react or the campaign may be over!

Comment by JAY MARINO

I think Major “Crack” Garret is falling in love with the Obama Bin Ladin coolaid drinkers!

Comment by PM

Why would this trip frustrate McCain? He has been after Obama to go since the beginning, Obama is the one that would not go until he got the nomination to run for president., that alone should show that he didn’t really care.

Obama, you are not the first one to go on these trips, McCain has beat you several times and even if you do get to be president I will never back you. I have no respect for the Democratic party since they have shown absoutley no respect for the president of the United States and have passed that message to all the other countries, so I hope you get the same respect that your party has shown to President Bush. You are a flip flopper but Bush stuck to his guns and did the right thing. You always have to re-evaluate things in order to make it sound like you are not flip flopping.

I guess Obama’s trip can be termed a success if he is running for president of the world. He clearly showed that he is more concerned with what the Europeans think than what Americans think.

Europe will support anyone who will subordinate US interest to their approval. They fear US capability and competitiveness and have sought to shackle it for years. Obama is their guy because he clearly subordinates US interest to the “World View”. Ultimately, this will destroy the exceptional leadership of the US and reduce its capability to defend itself and everyone else to ineffectivity.

Comment by jim Facciuto

NObama’s trip abroad was nothing more than a stunt…..a circus act that rivaled the clown car running around in one direction, then another, accomplishing nothing. What did it show about NObama…..that he can walk and chew gum at the same time?……as usual, the PRESS is making much more of this farce than the American public cares to pay attention to.

NObama is a mile wide and an inch deep. He isn’t even a polished speaker…as so many people in the press would have one think. Listen to him in any speech and count the times he says uhhhhhh….it’s pathetic…….It’s true, he’s pure hype, with very little context behind him. He has no position on the key problems of American……they just change according to his audence.

I have no doubt whatsoever that NObama has NO chance of ever living in the White House. He’s a fake….and the American public will “see” him in the end, and he’ll lose ……and he’ll lose significantly.

Comment by Jacob

McCain didn’t lose any points. The one term senator from Illinois made plenty of mistakes…not visiting our troops….if he believe that a trip across the ocean for one week is going to sure up his foreign relationships he is wrong…this is something that takes time. Mr McCain has years of expereince something that can not be summed up in a week. This of course is just one American Citizen talking to others. We are a little uncertain about this candidate.

Obama’s bloated entourage is patting themselves on the back for having “made no mistakes” … but that’s not the true impact of the trip.

For that, look to the Times Online article of 7/25/08 that lampooned Obama (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/gerard_baker/article4392846.ece) titled, “He ventured forth to bring light to the world”.

The more Obama practices his positive-mental-attitude, content-free bloviation, the more the world sees him for what he is — an articulate but frighteningly inexperienced junior politician. He is reaching the point of diminishing returns in constant-orator-mode. The hard, cold facts of the matter is that Obama is too inexperienced to lead the U.S. in such difficult times as we face now.

And the more Obama’s camp crows that he “made no mistakes”, the more they miss the overall point of the election: qualifications, experience, and achievements will count for much more on election day than artful but effete wordsmithing.

So just keep on “making no mistakes” … right into a landslide loss come November.

Cmon. There was a rock concert in Germany and Obama was a side show. Do you expact me to believe that 200,000 Germans spoke English? I think not. Most of the people there heard what the peanuts gang heard when an adult talked… wah, wah, wah, wah, wah.

Comment by Gayle

Given the examples of of Obama’s and his campaign’s judgment so far, this is BS. He’s an arrogant, flipflopping elitist and this trip has shown he is more concerned with what the Germans and French think than what Americans think. His decision to play basketball with the cameras instead of visiting the wounded in Germany without reflects on what kind of Commander-in-Chief he would be and shows the lie he tells that he supports the troops.

He’s a pinhead.

Comment by mccainocrat

Obama’s camp is really reaching for straws here. Their highminded self critique is a bit off.

Comment by Gary

The question is not did Obama make a mistake, the question is, “Is Obama a mistake”. I believe he is.

Comment by Ron Kluge

One cannot put it into sound bites. This world and our role in it is very complicated. Each of McCain’s statements were correct. If one wins this election based on who can communicate by simplifying, then we will reap what we sew and once again be dissatisfied when there are no instance fix.

And, Obama stated: “Let there be peace” and a world that has been at war with each other since time began, layed down their arms and loved each other. RIGHT!

Comment by Bruno Kazenas

The Sunnis were looking for a committment from the US troops before they changed directions against Al Qaeda. Everyone around the world heard Bin Laden say that the US did not have the ability to see the war through. (Harry Reid heard Bin Laden’s cry and buckled). We all heard months before the surge began that this will take place. This is what they needed to make sure their committment to the US and the new Iraqi government was not going to result in their heads being cut off and paraded through the streets of Iraq.

Barack did very well.

I’m proud of him.

Comment by Cleta Brewer

I certainly hope Mr. Obama didn’t tell his people to use the large crowd gathered in Germany for Him. They were gathered for Two Rock Bands, who were about to perform! Americans may be a little slow sometimes, but we aren’t fools!!

Comment by Sparky

The funny thing about all of this is that Obama’s trip was of McCain’s own making. He goaded Obama to go to Iraq and Afghanistan and it blew up in his face. Then this morning McCain goes on the air attacking Obama for going and saying that he’s out galavanting around the world when he should be concentrating on what’s going on at home.

I’m really thinking strongly that McCain is suffering from early stage dementia.

Comment by Mike

Telling the truth based upon existing conditions (regarding a 16-month timetable for withdrawal of some ground troops in Iraq) is not a liability for McCain. Speaking of Iraq, it WAS the first major conflict since 911. The change in tactics in Iraq DID make a huge difference. Obama is full of it.

Comment by Louie DaVia

The Obama campaign gets an A+ for spin and wishful thinking. Barack can always start his own advertising agency if he loses the election. I hear that someone is needed in Alaska to sell snow to the Eskimos.

Comment by rob braswell

Couldn’t disagree more with this asessment. This foreign lovefest that Obama encountered only make him less palatable to Americans like myself. To me, if Europe likes it, I dislike it, because Europeans idolize weak and ammoral leadership, are embarrassed by the strong stance the Bush administration has taken against terror, which highlights their impotence and non-action in the war against terrorism. There is a reason Europe has stagnated growth, economically and population wise. Their socialist economies and anti-christian attitudes mark the decay and vapid soulless descent into humanism and secular vaguesness. Obama is cut from the same cloth, for the US Democrat party also worships at the altar of socialism, wealth redistribution, elimination of christian principles from all walks of American life. What a damming praise that countries like Iran, Syria, Pakistan have openly expressed desire for an Obama presidency. Of course they wish that a lightly experienced, untested, unimaginative creature like Obama would rise to the Oval Office. He would be a willing accomplice in their fight for the proliferation of radical Islam, one world government, anti-christian world. I saw abolutely nothing more than sweet, syrupy platitudes and empty cliches from his speeches during this folly. Where is the “beef” with this man? Why are journalists not pressing for policy specifics? Because these specifics will shock and alarm middle America with their brazen socialist intent. Massive new taxes, forced government healthcare(Medicare anyone, that is a GOVERNMENT program), more unwanted “help” for regular Americans, who do better when the government keeps it busy body hands out of our lives. Unlike most liberals, we conservatives don’t see the government as important to our daily lives. We don’t rely on a single person or even Congress/Senate to inspire us and “fix” problems that are really just phantoms conjured up by meddling politicians. Barack Obama will not win the Presidency because he is not fresh, he is not new, he has no new or good ideas for “fixing” any actual legitimate problems that face the US(Immigration, Iranian hegemony, Chinese industrial sabotage and economic chicanery). He will be exposed for what he is, a small thinking, local rabble rouser from Chicago whose greatest hope is to force pseudo communism on the US and cede more US independence to the criminals at the Kremlin, UN and Tehran.

I am an Obama supporter. I respect Senator McCain.
However with ALL th gaffes lately, I truly wonder if he would be “ready on day one”

Comment by mike king

Ok, if one were to live in a social vacuum and be presented the two candidates it’s clear that McCain would be a poor choice to be the “first person” of America, either in style, competence or intellect. But yet it is Obama that must “prove” his worthiness constantly while remaining error-free and above reproach just to capture 50% of the polls.

The Press isn’t giving Obama a free ride – the Press is giving McCain a pass. Ou maybe its a large segment of the public that literally doesn’t hear what it doesn’t want to know.
Either way – this race makes no sense until you consider prejudice – not just racial prejudice (a factor) but more to the point political-social prejudice. A prejudice based on the desire for things to go the way we they were versus the way they are. How else can one understand the popularity of off-shore oil drilling while the Ole River is coated with oil and there is a unanimous agreement that any gains from more drilling are distant and nominal at the very best. The examples abound.

To my thinking, this isn’t an election about Obama or McCain, it’s about the American publics ability to deal with reality or remain hopelessly addicted to the rose colored glasses that make a fool look wise and the competent look questionable.

Just remember – you live with the choice.

Comment by Leishtek

I feel Obama has the support of International leaders; he will win overseas support for the U.S. Bush cares nothing about foreign policy nor foreign opinion. Has McCain given any indication he is nothing but a Bush clone? We need the world to support us, not be against. Obama is the only choice to accomplish that goal.

Comment by Rudy

Give me a break. One highly-orchestrated trip does not make him a statesman and a savior of all the world.

Comment by Stephen Pauly

It is easy for a national figure who has not had executive responsibility to gain favor with the International community. The challenge for Obama will be when faced with uncertain nuclear and terrorist threats that have some ambiguity – what will he do about protecting our country? And will the allies he is embracing today, agree with his course of action? We won’t know this answer until after the election – when it will be too late…. Can America risk our future?

Comment by Bernie Baumgartel

All you said is , of course, a deliberate interpretation of the Obama camp. But this Obama camp is too eager to find faults in McCain.

Having said that, I believe that Obama may be a better foreign policy manager than McCain. But I doubt very much that he knows how to handle the economy.

As a Canadian I am a bit worried about Obama’s policy direction to sanitize the American economy at our expensaes. I don’t believe that McCain will do that, if he wins office.

As as social policy is concernbed: Youth, crime, medical etc., Obama is clearly the leader and has shown leadership all his adult life(as shown in his autobiography written long before he had presidential sspirations.

Is he too black, i.e., is he a racist? It will be very difficult foir him to shed a life long obsession. B.

Welcome home, Senator, after a successful trip. Congratulations on bringing Sen. McCain around to the idea of 16 months being a reasonable timeline, horizon, timetable, whatever, for ending the occupation of Iraq, even with the usual caveat of “conditions on the ground permitting.”

Last time I made a comment on a FOX News site, I was mis-quoted, or misrepresented in my opiinion, on the web by having your biased comments about Senator Obama attributed to me! Obviously the prospect of a timetable in Iraq today is not the same as when a timetable was first suggested by anti-war Democrats. At that time it was correctly argued by opponents of a timetable that conditions on the ground should dictate U.S. strategy. The fact that this policy was successfully followed is precisely the reason why a timetable might be more favorably considered today. It is ironic that those who initially opposed the troop surge are still denying its success and simultaneously attempting to take credit for its positive results.

I have never seen a Fox News article present Republican gaffes. I’m not saying I liked it simply because it was criticizing Republican elements, but it gives me hope for your organization.

As a former conservative, I have been largely disheartened by the decline in the intellectual heft and paucity of rational discourse in the modern Republican party. Unfortunately, I believe that Fox News has, wittingly or unwittingly, provided a voice for this downward trend

It sounds like McCain is flairing away because he doesn’t know what to do. I’m afraid he’s lost it. I think he gets a plus for supporting the surge and a minus for the war. So he and Obama are equal. What is important is where we go now, at home and abroad. He lost this Republican vote by over the top comments and incoherent domestic plans.

The LAST thing this country needs is to emulate Europe. We do not need foreign approval on anything. We need to take control of our trade and quit running trade deficits and run surpluses. Make the global economy dependent upon the US and not the other way around. The admisistrations from Bush I to Clinton and Bush II have forgotten this.

Obama will sell the United States to foreign powers as well.

Comment by Skadams

It is obvious that McCain knows his foreign policies, a few slips of the tongue and the Obama camp wants to jump on him. So what if he said Iraq-Pakistan border or 2006 instead of 2007, it just means he has both countries and their problems on his mind. I’m young and college educated and I have had errors in my speech. I have heard members of the media also make slips. Bush has made more than any president and if we were to list all of Obama’s it would take all day. Let’s stop with this pettiness and get on to the real business which is the economy, Iraq and Afganistan war, sending $700 billion to foreign countries instead of drilling for our own oil, getting rid of the present do nothing Congress, etc.

Comment by Nick Boersma

I find this and interesting recap. When you are so infatuated with your candidate, you can’t see the forest from the trees. So you say he didn’t stumble in Germany? I beg to differ. What I heard was a man trying to appoligize for America. I heard “O” promoting European socalist ideas that haven’t worked. I’m sorry, I am not appoligizing for liberating the people of Germany and France. Then for not visiting with the troops. Big mistake. You can try and respond with whatever or blame someone else. The bottom line, you go see the troops, period. End of discussion. Why you ask did he not go? He is more concerned with himself than the troops or America. We can’t questions he is a patriot. I can and will. A patriot is one who puts love of country before his own aspirations. “O” has only one thing he worships, and that is himself. Why hasn’t “O” widened the gap with McCain? As my true friend and Democrate told me yesterday, ” I have voted “D” all my lfe and they know it. They are not even thinking I would vote another way.” The silent “D” like my friend who will now vote for McCain is their biggest stumling block. As a lifelong “D”, the speech in Germany, not seeing the troops, finalize the deal for “O”.

Comment by Marcia Morris

I just wonder, without all the foreign advisors he has, if Mr. Obama could have really talked to foreign dignitaries with any expertise or intellect. To me, it would have made more of an impression going to the Middle East and Europe as a learning mission without all the showmanship. He should be on broadway.

Another thing that bothers me is talking about our United States as he did in Germany. It is almost as if he wanted to impress these countries and not stand up for the Country that gave him what he and Michele have. Have to say, should he become president, our beloved America mistakes and all will never be the same. His “changes” will bring us down and this scares me.

McCain is not the best but I appreciate his outlook for America and his common sense regarding security and Iraq. To me security is the most important. I have done a lot of reading and studying of both candidates and my decision is made.

Comment by Gene S.

Sen. Obama usually says the obvious before anyone else says it; then his CNN and MSN supporters declare him visionary and righteous and therefore more fit to become president. This is exactly what they did with his speech made in Germany. In the speech, most of the things he mentioned he wants to do if he becomes president are things this nation is already doing; yet this speech is being declared righteous and forward-thinking. It is an old fortune-teller trick.

Comment by Larry-Minn.

Just out of curiousty why doesnt anyone talk about the things that are actually happening. To think that spending money to hire well know rock bands to play before a speech is unbelieveable.
Now it has been said he even served beer. No wonder there were so many there, free beer and music for the young generation, Imagine that.. but the media never says a thing about this kind of campaigning. I am sure this wont get posted, important stuff doesnt.

Comment by Mike Marquardt

Barack Obama was a much anticipated “big bang firework” that fizzled like a dud. He impressed as a student doing last minute cramming for a test. All style and no substance.

My impression of the meeting with President Sarkozy was that the French president was polite, yet reserved and tolerant.

Also, Senator Obama to me, did not appear to offer the honor accorded and entitled to the European leaders. He approached podiums in the lead, he did too much back slapping, trying to say “look at me, I am more important than you. You are with me because I am great.”
Last query…should the U.S. taxpayers pay for the increased security costs associated with the trip?

IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT MINOR VERBAL MISTAKES WHILE TAKING QUESTIONS, ONE DOESN’T HAVE TO GO FAR TO FIND OBAMAS FUMBLING OR BUMBLING EITHER…..

MOST OFTEN DURING THE HARD QUESTIONS HE HAS NO ANSWERS, SO HE GOES ON AWING, AND UHING, UNTIL HE FIGURES HOW TO ANSWER THE QUESTION WITH AN ANSWER THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL QUESTION.

A COMUNITY ACTIVIST AND 2 YEARS AS A SENATOR CAN’T POSSIBLE PREPARE YOU WELL ENOUGH TO BE THE PRESIDENT OF THE FREE WORLD. ARE WE THAT FOOLISH OF A PEOPLE…?

I REALIZE THE CHOICES WEREN’T MUCH, BUT YOU HAVE TO GO WITH EXPERIENCE AND SOMEONE THAT TELLS THE TRUTH….

THERE’S JUST SO MANY FIBS COMING OUT OF OBAMAS MOUTH RIGHT NOW. THERE IS NO WAY HE CAN KEEP ALL HIS PROMISES IF HE BECOMES PRESIDENT.

HE STARTED RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT DURING HIS 2ND YEAR OF HIS FIRST TERM AS SENATOR, AND WAS A CHICAGO COMMUNITY ACTIVIST BEFORE THAT….HE DOESN’T HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIENCE TO RUN FOR GOVERNOR OR MAYOR OF A LARGE CITY YET….

MAYBE IN 10 OR 15 YEARS, BUT NOW……? COME ON….!

CHANGE……WAIT TO YOU SEE WHAT KIND OF CHANGE HE WANT’S. MORE MONEY OUT OF YOUR HARD WORKING PEOPLE’S POCKETS IN TAXES…..YOU’LL SEE….

PEOPLE AREN’T DOING SO BAD NOW, THERE ARE PLENTY OF JOBS OUT THERE…

THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THE OIL PRICES AND THE HOUSING LOAN ORDEAL.

PRESIDENT’S REGARDLESS OF THEIR PARTY AFFILIATION HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT.

IF ANYONE SHOULD BE INVOLVED IN THESE MATTERS IT SHOULD BE THE CONGRESS, BUT THE LEADING PARTY IN CONGRESS IS TOO BUSY BASHING BUSH AND TRYING TO GET THEIR GUY ELECTED, THAT ALL THE THINGS THEY SHOULD BE DOING ARE FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS.

SUCH HATE AND VENOM COMING FROM THE DEMOCRATS, IT’S UNBELIEVABLE….

YOU ONLY NEED TO SEE THE CAMPAIGN HE RAN AGAINST CLINTON TO KNOW HOW THE LIES FLY. HE’LL TELL YOU ANYTHING YOU WANT TO HEAR.

I agree with Major’s asessment. I have one question though. Since Major Garrett has been following the campaign so closely, why wasn’t he the one to ask Obama questions for the Fox News interview for Monday? It seems like another media photo op with lousy questions, instead of constructive debate from a journalist who is actually paying attention to details. Major got cheated! It should have been his interview. Shame on you, Fox!

Good article that reflects what I witnessed over the last week. I must say Obama conducts himself very well. You can see how well he is liked by the smiles and body language of those he is photographed, including General Patraeus. If we think objectively using history to guide us, it is fairly apparent that there will not be drastic change with either man as President, but the hope and optimism, the renewed enthusiasm of youth in politics, the good will of other countries that will be gained by an Obama victory are incalculable. Contrasted to MacCains grumpy old “screw you” attitude, the leadership and vision of Obama could be the tipping point that leads America to the next and best chapter in it’s colorful history. It is not our choice to make but we in the rest of the world have our fingers crossed that America is ready to make a wise choice this time. Thanks for your consideration.

Nary a word about Obama’s most recent stumbles, e.g. “Israel is Israel’s best friend”, and his outright lie: “That is my committee”, referring to the Senate Finance Committee that cobbled together the new housing rescue bill, though he is not even a member of that committee.

Comment by James Heath

It is amazing that you state the gaffes of Senator McCain but not those of Senator Obama. yesterday watching Obama with Sarkozy Obama answered a question about if he learned anything new during this trip. At one point in his response he said the trip had confirmed that Iraq was considered to be the biggest security threat in the region. That this opinion was shared by many in the Middle East, and that definitely Israel regards Iraq as the biggest security threat. At this point I am thinking that he seems to finally be recognizing reality and coming around to John McCain’s position. Then he goes on to say that it is imperative that Iraq not get a nuclear weapon. Then it comes clear to me that this boob cannot tell the difference between Iran and Iraq.

Not a mention on the news. If McCain did it it would trumpeted as another another sign of his senility. If Bush did it it would be a confirmation of the stupidity of the man.

Let’s review a few things then:
Obama thought there are 60 states(Can you spell potato Dan Quayle?)
Obama thought that Israel was Israel’s greatest Ally. (Is this another Bushism?)
It was Obama who said that these leaders are ones he would have to deal with for the next 8-10 years, ( Is Obama planning a coup d’etat?)
It was Obama who said it is always a bad idea to say always or never.
Three of these four were said during this trip. Yet Major writes that Obama’s praetorian guard believes they have had a good week. I guess so, if we are going to continue the lopsided coverage.

However, I forward every Nobama e-mail and Internet site referral I can. If we can defeat the press, it will be the beginning of freedom in America.

Americans Unite! Take back the press.

I do not care about Europeans. I care about Americans. Obama is a Euopean Socialist, and will try to model America as such. America is still the greatest country on the planet. That is why millions of people flock to this country. Including Europeans. America with its capitalistic society has accomplished more in two hundred and fifty years than the rest of the world has done since the beginning of man kind. But yet Obama thinks that this country owes something to the rest of the world and would apoligize for what he thinks is a horrible country. THE REST OF THE WORLD SHOULD BE LIKE US!! It’s the economy stupid. McCain had 9 day jump on Obama to tell the voters his economic and energy policies. He did not sieze the moment.

McCain’s ego got in his way and his campaign strategist were asleep at the wheel.

He whinned about not getting equal media time.

He overplayed “his” surge.

Misspoke about a 16 month time table and moving troops from Iraq to Afghanistan

His photo ops at the dairy department and NH airport were pathetic.

Obama and his guys will never get past the politics of it all. That is the diference. Senator McCain has changed/monitored his talk many times when things have looked better or different not when it has been better politically. Obama has first, formost and only looked at what is good for Obama and his overall need to be the center of attention and looking good. That is the difference between the two men and it may be why obama may be the next president but by all measures Senator McCain is by far the better man. No matter how emotional Chris Mathews gets over obama.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that he’s also an “empty suit!”

His trip was a perceived accomplishment for the people who are mesmerized with what little this candidate has accomplished. Even the author of this column, Major Garrett, who is clearly in the tank for him described it as “what the freshman senator has accomplished in an eight-day trip nearly around the world.” REALLY? How nearly around the world? And what did he accomplish
for the citizens of the USA?

objectivity is straight out the window with this piece. “bask in the glow of Obama”. i’d be embarrassed if I worked at the same place. and, what you’re calling “errors” by McCain is debatable at best. keep reaching.

Its a pity that this is what politics is about. While Obama is a great speaker when on speech, he is less than inspirational off speech. Although it is a charming thought to have a great speaker as a leader it is troubling when that person has extremely limited experience, speaking great does not solve problems, experience solves problems. I for one do not want my president learning 80% of the job while on the job, we just had 8 years of that and look at the mess we are in.

The issues;

Iraq is off this list,

McCain, Obama, Clinton ALL had the same approach to pulling troops out, 16-24 months +/-, some said depending on the ground game while others said they would adhere to the timetable no matter what. The US is never leaving Iraq so you can forget about that, we are still in Germany, Japan, Korea, etc. we aren’t leaving the middle east. McCain is the senator that told Bush more troops were needed, this turned into the surge strategy.

The economy is a good one,

Obama wants to raise taxes on the top tier earners, and everyone else as well. The top 2% wage earners pay 60% of the total tax bill for the USA, read that again before you think the top 2% is not entitled to more tax relief. hmmm more taxes mean less money to invest and spend, both of which are bad for the economy.

McCain is going to cut everyones taxes. hmmm less taxes means more money to invest and spend, both of which are GOOD for the economy.

Obama is going to raise corporate taxes, this means less profit for companies which means lower wages, less expansion, less research and development of new products which means less new jobs, hmmm bad for the economy.

McCain wants to lower corporate taxes, this means more profits for companies, higher wages, more expansion, more research and development, more new jobs, hmmm good for the economy.

Obama is against drilling for oil, against nuclear energy, against solar, against, wind, against everything new except taxing oil companies for windfall profits.

McCain is for drilling everywhere, nuclear energy, solar, wind, everything, and while we can NOT drill our way out those arguments were used 13 years ago when Clinton wanted to start drilling, (where would we be today if he had gone ahead anyway and drilled?) There is more shale oil in the rocky mountains than in all of the middle east, the rocky mountains are 1500 miles long, do you really think ALL of it is recreational usage area? Offshore? The gulf of mexico has hundreds of oil rigs in it, did any of them leak during hurricane Katrina? NO! So I think its pretty proven to be environmentally safe..

Immigration, Obama wants a one world no borders as evidenced by his “I am a world citizen” speech and his “world tour”. I am glad Europe loves him so much, they are a bit socialistic over there don’t you know? and they loved him, why? he speaks their language.

McCain, while stumbling with the Kennedy bill actually heard the voice of THIS country and adjusted his position (exactly what a public servant should do if he is misguided), now he is for enforcing the borders and THEN working on the current illegal situation and THEN working on a guest worker program.

Problems get solved only when addressed one piece at a time, something congress can’t seem to understand.

If you want a guy for President that speaks really great but has no experience then vote for Obama, if you want a guy for President that doesn’t speak in a polished manner yet has decades of experience in world affairs AND crossing the isle then vote for McCain.

My 2 cents.

Face the fact SR Advisers for Obama. Your trip “almost” around the world was a complete flop!! You lost ground in the polls, you blew off our injured troops because you could not use them as a campaign backdrop, and, it was obvious you are much more comfortable as Europeans than Americans. Every one of you HATE America, and can’t wait for opportunities to put us down. In fact it was a breath of fresh air having you out of the greatest country on earth…maybe you should go back to Europe where you belong. Get back to us in 10 yrs. This article presents some interesting information. However, credibility in writing is often dependent on obeying rules of grammar and spelling. The large number of errors present in this piece detracts from its overall message and suggest carelessness. To cite one example, there is a ‘broze’ bust of Winston Churchill. Perhaps articles should be proofread before being posted on this site.

McCain is nothing but a RINO. In early primaries democrats crossed over and combined with liberal republicans gave Senator McCain a huge bump.

He can’t even keep basic facts straight which demonstrates that he does not have the metal capacity to be President of the United States. If the worse happens and he gets elected, then the country will pay a steep price as he ages and his mental capacity gets even worse.

Senator Obama as president will be like President Jimmy Carter’s second term, but at least he will be coherent. He will have the metal capacity to comprehend the facts, and at least we can hope he will put the Nation ahead of his liberal views.

I am astounded at the way most media personnel are acting as campaign agents for the Obhama candidacy. The zeal with which errors are pointed out in this article are in poor professional form for a journalist. The press seems so excited at the notion of the first black President, they seem to be actively campaigning for him and ignoring his own significant errors. The speeches this week, widely heralded by the press, were abominations to me as an American. Mr. Obhama seems to be more concerned with pandering to win favor among our ememines than in serving his country. A country which he show open disdain for, unless of course it has the intelligence to elect him President. I have no objection to any presidential candidtate based on their race, gender, age, or religion. However, I am appalled at how many people in the major media who fail to challenge his candidacy with the same vigor they challenge others. There is an almost idol worship feel to the coverage and no challenges to his obvious socialist agenda and lack of understanding of how the American economy works.

You should be embarassed.

When are Obama and his people going to realize that most Americans don’t care what the Euro-Nations think about them. This has always been our stance, as it goes right along with us liberating ourselves from a Euro-Power in Great Britain. The Europeans don’t vote for who is President. Americans do. So why Obama goes on a Beatles-like tour through the group of countries that would just as soon see us burn then succeed is beyond me. We don’t need a nominee running around Europe like he’s a rock star. We need that person running around the United States telling it’s people WHAT THEY PLAN TO DO TO SAVE US, not WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE TO SCREW US. If you want CHANGE Mr. Obama, try not pandering to the Euro-trash, and laying at the feet of the Ultra-Libs, and try talking to the people who have no homes, jobs, and need to know how they will get their kids to school without gas in their tanks. Try admitting you were wrong about the troop surge, that the good General knows what he’s talking about and you don’t, and try to not to be Pelosi’s lapdog for 5 seconds. We all know you were against the war, we all know you were against the troop surge, we all know everything about you…..except for WHAT HAVE YOU ACCOMPLISHED SINCE YOU TOOK YOUR SEAT???? The answer is nothing. You are nothing more than the pretty painted shell on the ugly liberal machine. You keep talking about the past and the mistakes made, but you don’t talk about how you plan to fix it, work with it, and make it better. And the reason you do that sir is because you haven’t a clue as to how to do any of it. I can only hope for this country’s sake that you do not get elected, because if that comes to pass, your time in office will make Jimmy Carter’s seem like a day at Chuckie Cheese.

Obama’s trip will actually hurt him in the eyes of many Americans. He seems to want to be President of the World, or at least of the EU. Americans want a President who will look after our interests first, be a good Commander in Chief, and be a straight talker. Obama is none of these.

A conclusion that Obama has seen no bounce in the polls can only be based on your own FOX poll (Obama +1). With its meager sampling it stands in sharp contrast against every major poll, including Gallup (+7) and Rasmussen (+6). Such a result smells strongly of cultivating data, rather than merely collecting it, especially against the backlight of your now well-established reputation for championing the right against all odds, not the least of which is the truth. Fair and balanced indeed.

You might excuse yourself by noting that Gallup and Rasmussen include a later date than FOX, except that the FOX poll was still out of sync with polls conducted during the same cycle as the FOX poll.

Of course, tomorrow is another day, so like a broken clock, your numbers may some day be right for at least a day…

What about the polls when they state that McCain can handle the Iraq war and international and foreign policies better than Obama and there’s a change in the points? McCain is gaining more points while Obama is getten cash from questionable sources. Barack Obama’s trip was nothnig but a celebrity tour. He wasted time in order to satisfy his ego. And what about the facte that Obama lied when he said that he voted agains the war in Iraq while public records shows that he was absent during the vote? I don’t know what fumbles in McCain’s part but there are plently fumbles and scandals that can reach new controversies. The media is siccessful to hide the truth about Obama while they give hime a rock star publicity stunt that has definetly nothing to do with his pilotical agenda.

Hi,

It seems like all media is biased including Fox News. The other day Steve said that there were 2 concerts schedule at sthe same time as Obama was to speak. We have not heard anything about this including Fox News. Fox News give much more time to Obama than MaCain.

As far as Obama is concerned we do not know what he believes except everything. Fox News does not take him to task on many subjects.

I do not bellieve you are as fair and balanced as you use to be. I never thought I would say this but some reporters on CNN are more fair and balanced than many of you.

Why would McCain slip in the polls for making a mistake. Obama actually said his parents met in Selma and that his Uncle rescued Auschwitz victims, both not only huge lies but premeditated lies. Obama still can not accept the fact that the surge is working and has worked. He still denies it. What a stubborn, arrogant j.a.

What is going on in Iraq is what we have always strived to achieve. The start of peace. If we set an deadline to be out this could all be for nothing. We need to work with the Iraqis, our allies, and the military to ensure all continues to get better as we slowly draw down our forces.

These are the dog days of summer, when no one really cares what’s going on in the presidential race. Our next diversion is the Beijing Olympics. After that, we’ll turn our attention to the conventions and then the two-month campaign, including the debates between the main candidates. The conventions will determine when we start to pay attention; what comes before the end of August is just not all that meaningful. If McBush talks about the Iraq-Pakistan border in a debate, however, he’s toast; he’s already stale bread.

Comment by Bill Roberts

I am a center-right Conservative and have, for many years, attached myself to the Republican Party. There was a time when the Republican Party espoused Conservative views in critical areas. The Party has been essentially correct on most social issues. Of great importance, they could be trusted, for the most part, to fight for smaller government, lower taxes and the best of capitalistic enterprises.

That time has past. The Republican Party has betrayed the trust of the American people. They are corrupt and bankrupt of ideas. Their embrace of big government and massive spending sometimes even makes the Leftist Democrat Party appear conservative! The Republicans in Congress and even State Legislatures should be and will be thrown out of office in November. Good riddance!

My family and I are daily/regular viewers of Fox News. We have long admired Major Garrett for being a top-notch journalist. His analysis in this well documented article is excellent. He is to be congratulated on his insight, clarity and perception.

My family and I find ourselves fully undecided regarding John McCain. The reasons not to support this man are legion. Suffice it to say that, in addition to our family and friends, we are aware of many others who share trepidation in supporting him. The mood, I believe, with millions of Americans is either to stay at home or write-in a solid Conservative/Republican on election day.

It is fair to state that we hear a lot of talk that maybe we should support Obama and vote for Democrats down the line to help crush the present inept and untrustworthy Republican establishment. Their view is that maybe, just maybe, a new party will rise from the ashes who will be true to its principles.

I have personally maintained that McCain has not been and is not now ready for “prime time.” He comes across as a bumbling old man who forgets, misspeaks and mangles. The McCain camp can criticize Obama all they want about policy, but McCain has utterly failed to inspire, lead and present the American people with a credible plan for the future. He offers nothing for the young and other groups except the same old platitudes—when he can remember them. Like Obama, McCain is a flip-flopper and also takes both sides of many issues. His feeble attacks against Obama are pathetic.

I have even suggested, tongue in cheeck (for the most part!!) that McCain would be a good vice presidential choice for Obama.

The Republican Party should dump McCain no later than the Convention and select an inspiring spokeman (there are some) who will inspire and promote policies that inspire the American people. That person may not win either, but at least, millions of us will feel as though we have fought the good fight.

I end this episle that stating clearly that I and millions of Conservatives do not support the agenda of the ultra-right loonies (who don’t understand the real meaning of Conservatism) and certainly do not support the agenda of the ultra-left/european socialist loonies of the Move-On Democrat Party.

JOHN MCCAIN: IF YOU HAD ANY SENSE OF POLITICAL HONOR AND DECENCY, YOU WOULD STEP ASIDE. THIS WAS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO BE PRESIDENT AND YOU HAVE ALREADY BLOWN IT!!!

Comment by bwhitman

Obama has the luxury of watching events unfold and adjusting his stance. As I understand he is head of a committee for Afghanistan and has never call a meeting. Easy to make calls from the back seat after events unfold and to promise the world to everyone for everything. Mr. Obama, “When I’m president I will do this and this and this…” Well, not really, what you will do is tax us to do this, that, and the other. We need the next administration to focus on one or two issues and do those things really well, not promise everything to everyone. I hope the next administration focuses on energy independence, succeeding and then leaving Iraq, and the economy. If we focus on programs for energy independence, I believe the infrastructure work required will boost the economy. Two hundred thousand plus people may show up for Mr. Obama in Paris, this one voter will pull a lever in the voting booth once for John McCain.

This is a foolish article. The trip didn’t help Obama over here. Like the article said, look at the polls. It did show, however, how popular he is in Europe. I beg to differ regarding Obama’s foreign trip success. Big crowds, yeah, some photo-ops, yeah, nice jackets, of course, Europeans flocking to buy vacuum cleaners from him, yeah – yet no substance whatsoever. What is curioser, is how media is gratulating its own superficiality by praising Obama prowess – Wow, this guy’s has made up in six days forty years of experience and knowledge in history and foreign affairs.
He hasn’t, and gross mistakes are everywhere in his speeches and representations. Take this one as example, in Berlin: Obama’s Kumbaya vision of “the world stood as one,” Berlin wall and Europeans’ yearning for unity.
Now a telling detail regarding the Europeans’ yearning for unity: after the Berlin Wall fell, France put quite a fight bitterly oppossing the German re-unification.
Is this all Obama’s 300 advisers can do? The junior senator from Illinois is utterly unqualified for the job of US president, no matter how pretty he looks when the light is right (not like in the Landstuhl hospital situation), and how well he channels Oprah (in circumstances over which Stalin’s and Hitler’s ghosts still loom)

Can someone please remember that this is the Obama, who just came across at the top of this article as the one who knows that the European and US troop levels need to be strengthened, yet ALL the while these past 2 years almost, has been saying that a COMPLETE US withdrawl is needed. Dream on, Big 0 … your lack of sound judgment re: the Surge is evident.

And in McCain’s defense — the Anbar Awakening didn’t happen in a vacuum; it was deliberate American actions … using the same clear-hold-build strategy that was implemented by our forces across Iraq during the Surge … that made it viable.

Get the ground truth … from those who Were There When It Happened.

The Big 0 would have you think that the Surge succeeded only because the Awakening and other events … events he believes were totally independent of American influence … happened to coincide with our efforts, and we would NOT have succeeded in their absence …

when it was AMERICAN efforts — implementing the same COIN strategy that was as much an integral part of the subsequent Surge as the increased troop strength … that made the Awakening practically possible.

The Big 0 stated repeatedly we couldn’t succeed in such efforts.

This is not a slam of the Iraqis who rose up … some giving their lives … to take their nation back from the foreign thugs and Saddam leftovers who were killing and subjugating them.

But our Men and Women played the other key role in the supposedly-unrelated Awakening. The fact that the Big 0 diminishes their role in facilitating the success of both the Awakening and the subsequent Surge is a slap in their face … particularly to the late Capt. Travis Patriquin, who was the point man for establishing and maintaining our relationships with the shiekhs and other Iraqis of the Awakening.

It is evidence of bad judgment, as well … a far more significant shortcoming than confusing the timelines of the Awakening and the Surge.

Another softball piece on the junior Senator. They may be feeling good in his camp but anyone who takes the time to analyze various events which happened on the Europe tour and what Obama would really be like if elected would have to come away shaking their head and shaking in their boots. He said nothing original, copied speech lines from others, passed up oppportunities to meet with front line troops when he found out there was no photo op and followed two rock bands in Berlin so the crowd would be inflated. He’s an empty suit and a liar to boot. I hope the voting public sees him for what he is before it’s too late.

Obama is a kinder politician who doesn’t attack with such with such desperation and anger as his opponent john McCain does. He will be a great president because of his unspoiled experience in the us government and because of his obvious vision for a better America. Mcain
will stumble abroad and lead our Country further into dispair because he will follow the policies of the current administration, one who can’t see beyond Washington as usual, policies and beliefs that we can “drill” ourselves out of our current energy crisis. I hope Congress will listen that we must act now and not put into place a plan that reaches out 20 or more years. Further concerns about Iran, and our dependence on oil producing nations in the middle East. McCain is a military man, who sees the world from that prospective, dangerously believing that we have to muscle our way around the world. Obama will use wiser and more prudent policies to help lead us to world prominence again. I fear a McCain Presidency, what will lead to another four years of George Bush. Thank goodness we have such a candidate of promise, one who will get my vote, the first one I will have cast with confidence in years. What absolute hogwash! It seems as if Major Garrett was bamboozled like the rest of the cool aid drinking media into believing that this fully scripted trip had any sort of genuine intention and real foreign policy impact.

To begin with this man is a nominee not an actual President, who delivered a speech in Germany plagiarizing speeches from Regan and than twisting the great Regan’s words to mean something entirely different. Saying, we need to tear down the walls that divide all different people, which is a bunch of liberal fluffy talk. While Regan was standing up in defense of the German people boldly telling Gouache to tear down the actual wall that divided east and west Germany, and which actually happened not long afterwards largely because of Regan. Further Obambi had the nerve to be castigating the American people as a bunch of torturous and anti immigrant people in front of whom? the very people that caused the death and destruction of millions and millions of people. Yet Major Garrett says this man made no major errors while McCain has? Every darned position Hussein Obambi has held he has changed at least a few times and all the while lying and saying that he never has. John McCain said of Hussein Obambi, that he had the audacity of hopelessness in Iraq in saying we needed to immediately withdraw from Iraq when things were at the most difficult. Had we done that, Iraq would have been a total disaster and defeat for the USA. A defeat we would not be able to bare.

Obambi is not only a naive idiot he is also an extremely dangerous idiot who would make Jimmy Carter look like a right wing radical. Major get back to your senses and smell the coffee. This entire Obambi Hussein trip was strictly a photo op opportunity from beginning to end!

It seems Major has joined the larger flock of media personalities that have fallen to their knees at the feet of B. Hussein Obama.
I’ve noticed this more and more over the past few months, and actually mentioned my concerns to a friend while watching Fox a couple of weeks ago. I stated my concern of how it had become more than subtly apparent that Major Garrett was not being “fair and balanced” and appeared to be a little too biased toward Obama. In fact, my friend didn’t think Fox would allow any of their staff to operate with such an open bias and shook off my concern – until he read this article (my friend pointed it out to me – stating my concerns appeared to be supported).
Another so called “journalist” has lost their credibility. It seems the scales at Fox are not in perfect equilibrium after all.

Comment by SSG Maurice Ivy (U.S. Army)

Even though he did, no respectable news source is going to credit Obama with whipping McCain at his own game. Europe and the Middle East seem graciously receptive to Obama’s ideas. Don’t get it twisted; we need our European allies and Middle Eastern (oil producing) friends to have open minds to our concerns. That’s more than we can say for McCain or Bush at this time.

I think the American people are sick of looking at and listening to Obama. His team is too sure of themselves.

Whether it’s in the primaries, or the upcoming general election, Obama and his supporters keep using the tactic of acting like Obama has already won, way before the votes are even counted. Statistics show that the bias media has favored Obama with more than twice the print and air time as McCain. Three news anchors accompanied Obama overseas. Obama campaigners brag about how they have raised more than twice as much money as McCain. Pundants keep claiming that it’s a democratic year, and that because of ill feelings toward President Bush, a democrat can’t possibly loose … and, yet with all this going for Obama … at this point in time, the polls are too close to call … as if the so called experts ignore the fact that at this point in time, half the country wants McCain for president … and, lately that number seems to be growing.

Comment by George

Senator Obama proved to the American people that he is quite capable of representing the country by appearing quite at ease in the company of world leaders during his visits to their respective countries. He seemed to have been greeted warmly by the citizens of the countries he visited and also by the US troops in the war zones. He was criticized for not visitng those areas but after making those trips overseas he was also criticized but that is the nature of politics.

Between Obama and McCain, I trust McCain more. Obama doesn’t have the experience for being President. He is to young, he doesn’t know what really happen during World War II. good coverage, major. however, it increasingly appears that the economy-not foreign policy-is the key issue that will decide the election. mccain and obama would be well advised to focus on the decisive economic issues that will be critical in swaying undecided voters in key states.
the “success” of obama’s trip and the apparent blurring of the lines between mccain’s positions, obama’s, maliki’s, etc. serve to underscore that the war in iraq and afghanistan-and foreign policy in general- are unlikely to be the pivotal issues.
mccain needs to go after obama’s tax policies , i.e. income and wealth redistribution, commonly known as socialism ,that would push a weakened economy into a deep recession-or worse.
either mccain is ignoring his advisors on these points, or they just don’t get it.

Comment by Joe

Let doddering McCain make his blunders. Although I loved Reagan, he made the same sorts of blunders during his later years. I am extremely suspect of Mccain’s judgment, given his penchant for anachronistic blunders. As the campaign pressures mount, so will McCain’s blunders. One of them is bound to be serious enough to make voters suspect of his mental and physical health. I am already in doubt.

I would love to see an open debate between the two candidates with specific questions. When it comes time to lead…true leaders will do this. To blow in he wind on public opinion is wrong…it is pandering at its finest. America comes first, last, and always. The rest of the world has had over 1,000 years to become what we have in 250. The WORLD needs to catch up….we do not need to slow down and be politically expedient nor politically correct.

I’ve missed what Obama’s senior advisor’s are touting as the latest and greatest. All I have seen on TV’s pictorial of Obama trip is a man with his hands in his pockets that looks like a thug on the streets. No one else has his hands in his pockets. Does no one else notice this? Also… why does he keep touching the leaders of other countries on the shoulders in a demeaning fashion as if to say “I am here to save you.” I think that Obama’s senior advisor’s advisor’s are trying to now to change the real ratings now that they are make in the states. People, look at those pictures!

What a bunch of liars the Obama camp are. What short memories. When the Democrats won the Nov.2006 elections, they vowed to pull the US out of Iraq. The situatuon in Anbar was described as unwinnable. In fact the Sunnis were siding with al Qaida precisely because they believed the US was going to pull out and leave them to the tender mercies of the Shiites. On January 5 of 2007 Sens. McCain and Lieberman held a conference in Washington where a plan for a surge, that precise word, was put forward. See http://www.aei.org/events/eventID.1446/event_detail.asp . Only after it became clear to the Sunnis that the Bush admin. was not going to cut and run, as advocated by the Democrats, and the Iraq Study Group, did the Anbar Awakening begin to take off, and by September of the same year, was changing the face of the war. If there is the kind of withdrawal that Obama is advocating, then we can be assured that the Sunnis will rise again. Of course Al Maliki would not mind that. He is a Shiite and believes he can maintain control, but there would be a bloodbath.

Obama is giving the people of America FALSE HOPE! This is the worst possible thing you can do to a people. The Romans tried it and look what happened to them: Race wars.

He will not be able to deliver any of his promises and he know that in his gut. That is why ever so slowly he is attemting to move towards the middle on his views. He has no favors to pull in and as things get really bad in this country more and more of those ’summer soldier’ supporters on the hill begin to pull away, impeachment will happen. It will happen as a result of his inability to change his association with the backdoor politics and religious attibutes he harbors. Finally, his wife is not going to be the diplomat that a president needs, she is not as patriotic as she appears and based on the European and other international poles may heads of state will be unable to seriously entertain her or listen to her based on the views she has already displayed to America.
It is unfortunate that we do have to chose between the devil and a rock, but the White House is not for those who need on the jod training. Especially, when it comes to the economy. It Obama does not solve this problem first and formost the war between those who are working and those who are not will start in earnest.
Lastly, he has no real power over the military preceived or othrwise!

Let’s all grow up, please! Is this a much ado about nothing news story, or what? So McCain made a couple of gaffs, who hasn’t? They take turns, and don’t we all? Talk, talk, talk! Talk enough and you say something that can be micro managed into “news”. I read into this story that Obama is so micro managed by his handlers that he avoid making a single gaff. Great! That’s what we need for president.. a managed puppet! McCain is far from perfect, and not my first choice from the Christian Right perspective, but at least the guy seems real. Really in charge of himself, not a mouth piece for writers who manage his every word and phrase so he can be presented as the “Swoon Candidate” that he presents. Looks more like an anti-Christ prototype with every passing glamor shot to me.

It is refreshing to see that Fox news is reporting blunders made by Senator McCain. Fox News has been extremely one-sided and not fair and balanced, and it owes its audience more. Fox News’ reporting has sunk to becoming nothing more than a collection of hit pieces on Senator Obama.

Until this article, I have seen nothing negative at all about Senator McCain from Fox News. Fox News reporting needs to become a lot more fair and balanced. Then let your viewers decide which candidate to vote for in the election. Anything less is an insult to your viewers.

Thank you Major Garrett. This is a refreshingly truthful article.

At one time I had admired and respected McCain. I have come to lose some of both. As the elder of the two vying for the presidency, never would I have expected him to display acts of jealousy and disdain, by making the many unfortunate comments about his opponent this week.
What is truly scary, however, is the fact…weekly his (as some WISH to call it) “gaffes,” are becoming MANY!!! It causes one to stop and think: “Perhaps McCain has been introduced to the early stages of DEMENTIA.” This is NOT to be taken likely! America would be at his mercy should he become the President of the United States, and possesses this mental health issue. It is time for all of us to become truly concerned should he continue with these confusing statements being made.
Not just mistatements relative to Obama, but general comments too!

Apart from the babble of politicians about who was right and at what instant they were right, the handling if the impossible problem that Petraeus and his men carefully analyzed, quietly disassembled, and then methodically solved part by part is truly wonderful. But this apparently represents an inconvenient truth for Obama.

Regardless of party, doers respect doers. The fact Obama has shown he is unable to rise above petty politics and fully recognize this classic effort for what it is will diminish him in the eyes of many (if not in the press or in Europe).

During another oil crisis (1977-1981) we learned what inaction can result in and what a small, moralizing, holier-than-thou leader can do to this country.

The 2nd to last paragraph should have been the first. Yes, 98% of your article was purely interpretational – and you presented as fact the interpretation of the Obama Officials. Isn’t that a little presumptious – that it is fact, and that they are ‘officials’ ?

According to Obama and his crew, his pop-star like world tour was a success. Was it?
During his trip to Israel and speaking about how his administration would carry the load in solving the never-ending Israeli-Palestinian fight. However, he immediately throws a wrench into that plan by reading from his speech and stating, “Let me make this clear, Jerusalem is and will always be the capital of Israel.” Right away he is telling any Palestinian negotiators that one of the Palestinian keys to solving this conflict, Jerusalem, is off the table.
Obama then follows this Pelosi like moment by going into Europe and telling them they are not doing enough in the fight against terrorism. Obama could have thanked them rather than insulted them. He could have thanked the German, Dutch, British and other European troops that have died, have fought, or are currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Obama then plays hoops while dissing our troops. He cancels a trip to visit wounded soldiers in Germany. He condescendingly describes the favorite part of his trip as thus: “I got a kick out of our troops.” By the way, where are all the bleeding hearts who gave Bush grief over sending Americans to war when he himself or his family have never served, and now we have Obama constantly stating that he will send another 6-10 thousand Americans into Afghanistan? Where did Barack or Michelle serve in a military capacity? Are his children being sent over?
Like most Democrats, Obama has on this trip strenthened the Democratic plank of less than a love affair with the U.S. Military. Don’t think so?
Republican Rep. Roy Blunt recently introduced legislation in the U.S. House that would reform the way overseas military personnel vote, to make it easier and to make sure their votes are counted. Not one Democrat rose to co-sponsor this bill with Blunt. The legislation was sent to the Armed Forces Committee, chaired and majority run by Democrats. They inturn sent it to the Military Personnel SubCommittee, again, chaired and run by a majority of Democrats. Not only this, but the bill was sent to committee for a period of time to be determined by the House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat. Think this bill will see the light of a floor vote? Not likely during this campaign season. Why would Democrats want to increase the voting participation of the military when their Republican opponent is a military war hero? And that is just like the Democrats of late, attempting to silence the voice of the voters, ie. Michigan, Florida, and the recent Democratic Delegate they removed as a delegate becasue she was supporting McCain.

I look forward to reading and viewing your opinions on Fox News. I do have one minor problem I would appreciate someone at Fox would address. It appears that the news coverage by Fox News is more slanted toward Obama. Sure McCain needs to step up his campaign, but the fact of the matter is that even on Fox News, all you hear is Obama, Obama, Obama. It seems that the Fox News Reporters are in a blather over Obama.

Just an observation — Fox News is still tops in my book. Don’t be swayed by the charm of a candidate that we really don’t know.

He liked the hope hoopla, but was concerned with lack of substance to what he heard. Maybe you should listen a bit more closely yourself.

If I am now mistaken, Senator McCain was making the point that Senator Obama was setting his policy concerning Iraq without having the benefit of traveling to that country in about 2 years and
he should get a first hand look and speak with our people on the ground that have the most current
facts and know the situation intimately. No where in Senator McCain’s speaking did I hear him suggest that Senator Obama take a publicity tour across Europe as the heir apparent to the American Presidency. In doing so, it only confirms my opinion that Senator Obama is a “typical” politician (never mind that he is trying to say otherwise). Correction, he is in a class all by himself.
In my many years, I do not believe I have ever seen a politician who has the “me”, “I love me”, “You love me”, “elect me and I will fix America’s soul and fix the ills of the entire world” ” and I am the only person alive that has the ability to do so. GIVE ME A BREAK.

The only thing that I think Senators McCain and Obama have in common…They are both
taking advantage of the american people by keeping their seat in the Senate while running for the
Presidency. No where, that I am aware of, can a person continue to draw their salary for over two years while actively seeking other employment. Oh, they do occasionally fly in for a
quick vote when it is advantageous to them for political reasons, otherwise, they are just taking
taxpayers money but not performing the service. My opinion is this, if you are seeking another job and are not available to do the job you were elected to do….RESIGN. Oh, oh, I forgot..They make the rules. Foolish me.

What if we discussed our economy, our energy crisis, the housing market, winning the war and setting the people around the world up for success by being the example.

This campaign on both sides is getting really old…and the flip-flop, mud slinging has got to go. Lets talk about the issues, listen to the people of the US and not of the world. Read the constitution gentleman and lets get back to basics…OUR constitution is the lodestar for the USA not the WORLD….

We got issues in our backyard…lets fix them first before taking on the world..win the war, stop inflation, do all the energy stuff (drill, air, wind, nuclear), be aware of our envirnoment but stop the global warming reteric..we are called to be stewards of that which GOD gave us…lets try doing it.

Get to the issues…not the he said…he said….I”M NOT LISTENING ANYMORE until one of you two gentlemen have something worth saying. Am I the only American who is done listening?

If they can sell this story (ie…the Obama camp) then maybe we they should set up an ice cream stand in the Polar region!! At some point the McCain camp has to tell the American people the truth about Obama and his clear positions and not worry about getting slammed by the media for it! Hey there is no tooth fairy…it may sound good…but that dollar under your pillow came from someone’s pocket. In the same way…big promises with big change…come with a price tag…watch out America…the new “tooth fairy” in American politics wants your wallet to pay for his promises.
Come on McCain…this country needs you to stand strong and just tell it the way it is…sooner or later the truth will sink in…and the election day won’t be so bad after all.

Actually, the whole thing seemed very presumptuous and staged and over the top. I actually felt uncomfortable and frankly a little embarassed. I’m afraid that he is totally over his head. My personal opinion is that the American people will actually see that his interactions simply stated have very little depth or understanding to them. Based on an almost total lack of experience, all you can do is to “fake it and hope that you make it”. What we all know is that in situations where you are uncomfortable, you pretend to know what you are doing. Not the right stuff in my mind. I would prefer my commander in chief to at least have some grasp of the realities based on real life experience. I keep hearing comments around judgement but based on the lack of experience, he has not demonstrated it so it’s all best guess.

Good luck to us I guess.

I find it frustrating that this article shows only the Obama campaign view of these so-called McCain mistakes. I do not believe McCain made any serious mistakes and I do not believe that Obama was particularly dazzling overseas.

It would have been a much more objective piece if both sides were represented equally. I’m sure that the McCain camp would have something to say about all of your claims of his “gaffes”

Maybe, another more objective reporter will write a similar article and properly inform the reader on all of the facts they need to properly evaluate these 2 candidates for the presidency of the United States.

Slick Obama has carried out a publicity stunt trip that only belies what is known … he is a slick orator. So was Bill Clinton. Wasn’t it Bill who ordered cruise missle after cruise missle into Afghanistan in order to distract from Monica?

Was it noticed that Brown did not appear with Obama at the mike for his press conference ‘victory lap’? Did anyone notice that Sarkozy noted that France has acted in Afghanistan in separate action from the US election process and not because of Obama’s visit?

I would prefer to see a solid leader with experience rather than a slick orator at the helm.

Mccain maybe made some missteps in his vocabulary, but he did not make grievious errors in my opinion. Iraq/Pakistan border vs Afganistan/Pakistan border? So what! The comments about the surge? I agree with what he appears to be saying, the surge of troops alone was not the answer, but the tactics behind the surge, counter-insurgency tactics of which General Petraeus is THE expert. I do not think the American Public gives a damn about your mis-interpretations. What I do have a problem with is Obama’s statement that he is a member of a U.S. Senate committee when he is not. That tells me he will say anything at anytime to get elected. That speaks to character and honesty. But yet I hear little on this. Your article states Obama has successfully proved himself on the foreign Policy front by taking this trip. Is that all it takes? What credentials could he have possibly acquired in an eight-day trip? Certification from a Get Rich Quick Seminar takes longer to acquire. I do not see coverage of his gaffs either. The aforementioned is one example of several that I am aware of. No, I guess you guys will just continue to poke fun at the only qualified candidate in this election cycle for the Office of the Presidency of the United States….John Mccain.

Comment by Doublesided Obama

Obama’s surrogate team’s attempts to make everything McCain says a fumble, pales in comparision to Obama’s real failures. Barack Obama’s Political Judgments should not be confused with Actionable Decisions
The Iraq surge has worked and Bush will be shifting troops to Afghanistan in the next few months. To protect Obama, the Democratic Congress has approved war funding through next year. That is the baseline that the future discussion should be based on. So Obama is just doubling down on Bush’s Strategy. Based on this trip Obama is now also doubling down on Bush’s approach to Iran and the Pakistan’s tribal areas.
Obama’s old campaign position of immediate “withdraw” has had a tactical change to one of a drawdown to “something” in 16 months in Iraq, and Obama now wants full funding for an on-the-cheap long term two combat brigades surge in Afghanistan. Obama has made an actionable decision of disapproving of Gen. David Petraeus, disapproving the Petraeus designed Surge operation (because he said it would fail), and refused to approve funding for Iraq and Afghanistan, (primarily because it takes to much money). After the Nay votes on amendment 2934 to 2011 to H.R. 1585, frankly, I don’t believe the best will stay in the Military when a Democratic is Commander in Chief, knowing they are considered liars.
“Acting President” Obama has interjected himself and taken an active role in the U.S. negotiations for the status and basing of the noncombat troops that will remain in Iraq. This started when Iraq Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebri’s visited with Obama in June of 2008, and culminated with Obama’s trip to visit al-Maliki in July 2008. But, Obama refuses to tell us what his definition is for the noncombat end condition in Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama has told us it is not the same as Petraeus. Without U.S. human intelligence, and troops on the ground, and legal opinion backing for every strike, we cannot effectively target the terrorists in Iraq, Afghanistan, or Pakistan’s tribal areas using the “Over-the-Horizon” fighting strategy.
Obama’s 400 advisors are from the failed Over-the-Horizon” fighting strategy crowd. Desert Storm stopped at the Iraq border because we knew we could not win in the streets of Baghdad. After Desert Storm, when Congress and the Administration throughout the 90’s further downsized the human intelligence, cut troop strength by 500,000, and collapsed supply chains, we started the Post 9/11 era without the ability to compete. The military had shifted to an “Over-the-Horizon” fighting strategy. We have many examples of the failure of this strategy (Chinese embassy, aspirin factory, and Black Hawk down) and no successes in the 90’s.

Obama notoriously claims that he would not have voted for the “dumb” Iraq war based on unclassified information in the NY Times. Obama did not participate in the actionable decision at 2:00 a.m. on October 11, 2002, when the Senate was called on to vote as to whether to authorize President Bush to invade Iraq. Democratic and McCain made that decision based on the available Classified Intelligence. On 6-5-2008, the Democratic Senate Intelligence committee came out and in a 171 page report and confirmed that Bush administration and Congressional statements on Iraq WMD were backed up by available (but flawed) U.S intelligence.
As we now are finally achieving some military success in Iraq, it is time to re-learn the lessons as to why we initially failed. We are at this point because we gave up the war in Vietnam in the 70’s and we won the cold war in the late 80’s. Why? The military threw the insurgency fighting manual away after Vietnam, and the U.S. drastically downsized human intelligence and boots on the ground capability after the cold war.

You may be one stupid reporter to think that Obama refusing to see the wounded troops was not a MAJOR MISTAKE. You may be one of those who either don’t care about the troops or you are drunken with the Obama tea of CHANGE rhetoric. Its unfortunate that you are even allowed to write such opinion.

Comment by heidi

Nothing Obama has “reported” about his trip is anything other than the policies of George Bush and John McCain, some for months and some literally for years.

Sarkozy revealed his intent to bolster French participation in Afghanistan long before Obama even announced his “world tour”, as some of your teammates have called it.

Rather than learning anything on his own, this trip has enabled Obama to “come home” and announce that, coincidentally it would appear, that his vision is remarkably similar to the plan John McCain has stating for quite a long time… and you have not bothered to reflect the fact that the Iraqi government is not putting pressure on the Bush administration to start getting the troops out. Is it possible that knowing that Obama was coming is responsible for the timing of Maliki’s recent announcement is in any way related to the Obama trip, which in truth is nothing more than meddling in the official business of the Commander-in=Chief. Right?

Your omitting so many variables in your article might fool some to place you in the same category as The New York Times, don’t you think?

Obama in Europe, made America look good! America has been hated around the world for the past 7 years. It will be great to finally have someone in office again, who is intelligent, interested in the world, articulate and a genuinely good man. Europe loves him. Hopefully, he will follow through and bring our people home from Iraq.

I get the distinct feeling Obama is running for office somewhere in Europe, trying to appease them with his positions. What about the American people? Who is he going to represent? I want a president who is strong enough to represent us abroad but ultimately look after his/her own country. I’m afraid Obama may just sell us out for whoever is praising him the most. I see no backbone here at all.

His audacious tour was beyond comprehension and disgusting. He chose to ignore wounded Americans because he could not take his political entourage and photographers with him! He brided the Germans…free beer and concert. What does this say about the man? He is devoid in morality, ethics and totally unqualified to be president. He probably broke our laws in “speaking for America” and denigrated the office of president, our political leaders of both parties. His elitist attitude coupled with his racism will destroy this great county. The man is an empty suit; a sycophant.

Wake up America!!!!

You say, “In Europe, Obama drew a huge crowd in Berlin . . . ” That’s not quite the whole truth. As I understand it, the crowds were already there following a free rock concert with two popular German acts, reggae artist Patrice and rock band Reamonn. If you gave a free concert in New York with two big-name artists and I walked out and gave a speech in German that few people could understand, would you say my speech drew a huge crowd in New York?

This report cannot be edited without the consent of the writer. This report is nothing but a divertionary tactic to the facts about Obama. For waht I’ve seen in the news, Obama is starting to derail. So far McCain didn’t made mistakes but Obama have so much problems and possible scandals that would stir controversy. Let’s start with the Jeremiah Wrich and his church using racial rants for Obama’s party, what about the fct that Obama accepted a special discount from Countrywide for his 1.3 million dollars mansion while the American people are loosing their homes during the finance crisis and Countrywide was one of the cause of the crisis. What about the fact that Obama is indeed supporting higher gas prices and opposing every way to lower by voting agains Offshore Drilling. Obama proposed to legalize abortion to the age of 12 and Medicare should cover abortion expenses while legalizing the fetal matter for stemm cell research and issue that have a lot of morale implications. What about the fact that some Democratic senators are recieving hughe profits from oil companies and failed mortgages while the A,erican people is suffering? I ses that Obama is have more political mistakes than McCain. One more question’ Why our troops are in favor of McCain over Obama? One thing for sure is that this report is nothing but a propaganda stint.

There is no choice in the Presidential Election. It is scary that the news media has the ability to make things so close when it should not be that way at all. Condi Rice, J.C. Watts, Thomas Sewell, Colin Powell and Bill Cosby all are black Americans that are worthy of presidential consideration far more that Osamabama, but they are not on the ticket. This is election should be a no brainer. Only one American worthy of a vote to be protected is running…..go John McCain.

I did not read all of the above comments, but did anyone mention the fact that two rock bands played at the site in Germany before B.O. spoke? Could this be the reason for the big crowd? Also, the number of American flags waving in the audience may have been held by dependents of American service men serving in Germany; just a guess. Also, I wonder about the bizzare attraction to B.O. by the once main stream media. Could it be their last gasp of blatent bias for the liberal candidate before going completely off the radar screen in favor of “fair and balanced” reporting? I have an idea this “media trip” will be referred to by future generations as the “Waterloo” of the once great media stronghold that attempted to change the great America that has to build a fence to keep people out to a socialist state destined for failure.

We can all see and feel where we gotten with the “weasle”/”freedom fries”/”old europe” fueled “if you’re not with us, you’re against us” rethoric. Americans are suffering. We can’t burden the load all by ourselves. I want to know how both campaigns outreach to our allies. Let’s keep hating each other in the US so we don’t have to talk about what’s really important.

Question, Why is it that as a “Fair and Balanced” news network you secretly get talking points from the white house and don’t report that. The White house doesn’t deny it when questioned about it. Also even after the story broke you didn’t make mention of it on your network. Quite strange.

After reading these comments, I am astounded. These are some of the most poposturous, uninformed, arrogant comments I’ve ever seen. Flinging wild accusations that have absolutely no basis in truth.

When you finally have no case you argue, you accuse FOX NEWS of a liberal media bias. Are you kidding me? FOX NEWS with a liberal bias? Thats even more poposturous. The fact that McCain isn’t being touted as president to be shows just how much he has screwed up in comparison to Obama.

What I also see here is the same messed up logic that I used to see from people that elected GW Bush. His approval rating dips to 28% or below, yet ~51% of America managed to vote for him instead of Al Gore and John Kerry. Look at the economy and the US world standing now. Pathetic.

I think it’s a shame on the Democratic party that they would nominate or even suggest to someone like Obama that he even run. The party seems to believe with all their heart that they can succeed with men like Kerry, Gore and Obam, not to mention Bill. Interesting that their choices at the very top are so limited. It’s very scary indeed that we as Americans let the Democratic party raise all their most useless to the very top.

This so-called trip was supposedly going to raise his popularity BEFORE he left. Of course the fabric of minimalization has taken over very quickly and now the part doesnt expect a bump in the polls. A bump was expected when he finally got the parties nomination. Actually doesnt have it yet, but the bump never materialized either. Change for the sake of change is what manager do when they dont know what is wrong. perhaps nothing is wrong. It seems that all that is driving the Democratic party is a hate of the rest of us. Sorry, but we dont hate you back. We just don’t get why you are trying so hard to hurt our country with bad leadership.

Cheryl,
Major Garret is simply a correspondent for the democratic candidates. Just like Carl Cameron is for the Republicans. So any articles or opinions Major writes will be from a Democratic point of view.

Having said that, what the Obama campaign said is pure poop. They’re basically starting to say the same things that the Bush administration has been saying the entire time. Somewhat McCain, and I’m not a big fan of his even though I will vote for him. He is our only chance to keep OBAMA OUT of the White House. This man is a Global Citizen after all, he wants to make the good ‘ole USA the same as socialist Europe! Imagine, bever neing able to fire an employee even if they just sit there all day doing nothing! Isn’t that great?!?! (Sarcasm, for the liberals)

Perhaps he should write another book… about how to get favorable treatment from home loan institutions or how to make money from the man-made global warming hoax or better still put him in a habitat on Mars so he can fill the vacuum of space with his rhetoric…. that hot air might even help that planet!

Beware of a wolf in sheeps clothing. Obama is certainly a smooth talker. This article was a good summary about how the Obama team felt about his trip. Does anyone really think they would acknowledge any mistakes? Take away Obama’s script and see how he performs.

Being an independen who supported Bush in 2000, it is interesting to see how the plate has turned it sides. The current mood and environment is completely same as that of 2000 except the mood is more for democrats where as in 2000 it was for republicans. I feel the surge for change is more now than it was in 2000. I predicted Bush will be elected in 2000. Democrats at that time whined very much like the way Republicans are now whinning. Democrats picked on petty things as Bush had grammatical mistakes, pretty much like the way reublicans are now doing. Lets see what got Democrats into the hole in 2000..they went too far left..what put repulican in the hole….too too far to the right…direspect for the humanity ( which dems didn’t do that much during clinton years). Dems whinned and accused but it didn’t work….Bush got elected…Republicans are now whinning, acusing, blaming. But taht won’t work this time. It was lucky for the republicans to have those balmes worked for them in 2004. Dear Republican Friedns, Looks to yourself before you blame or accuse..As the saying goes, “If you point one fingure at other, there are four fingers pointing towards you”. So, put your house and priorities in alignment with human values ( which the party stands for) and BE REALISTIC ( Being passionate is good but it is much better to understadn what the rest of the world, and for most of you, the rest of US wants). You will win if you do that. But is it too late to do that for this election. Change is now permanent. I predict we are going to have a dem as our president this time. Therefore digest this truth like a bitter pill ( which will have better effects later..may be the next president will a republican in 2012) and let’s get united and work for this beloved nation under Barack Obama.

Obama’s not the first guy on the block to choose style over substance. The ability to deliver rehearsed speeches with large parts copped from other famous speeches doesn’t show much either. It’s very telling that when it became clear that his campaign entourage wouldn’t be allowed in Landstuhl Medical Center to document his glad-handing, he decided to go to the gym instead. This shows a shallow self-centeredness that should be taken for what it really is – a harbinger of how he would govern were he elected.

I am independent voter, I voted for Ronald Regan (because I liked his positive view of America and George H W Bush (because I thought he was a man of tremendous integrity) ..I have also voted for Democrats. I never look at news coverage as being “in love with OBama” . The news covers anything that is new. In 2000, McCain the “Maverick” was the new kid on the block…the press lived on his buses and followed him everywhere. OBama is the new kid on the block in this election, this added to being the first black nominee would almost guarantee massive coverage. A few things, if anyone discusses or makes any comments about John McCain..they are always beat back with the statements that he was war hero…true enough. But can anyone tell me how many bills in support of veterans he has supported? Not many if any. In fact he was against the latest GI Education Bill and in fact did not show up to vote . As a retired military person, I find that truly amazing. Support for the military is about more than about spending $1 trillion dollars in support of a war in IRAQ (for what) but also about spending funds to support troops after they leave the battle field. I was looking forward to voting for McCain in 2000, he was not the nominee, but it has given me time to truly review his record…needless to say he will not be getting my vote. As far as OBama, I think having a President that other countries would like to work with would be great. Since we don’t have any true partners in the Iraq war, the US is shouldering the largest or all the costs..unlike the first Gulf War. I would dare to say that many of the problems we are experiencing now…oil prices/plummeting dollar/economic down turn are attributable to the war in Iraq and the perceived instability in that region. After 9/11, everything in this administration has been be afraid, but keep shopping. We are fighting two wars…how are they being paid for? Republicans love to say no taxes, but I don/t see how you fund two wars without them. I guess we leave all this for our children. Everyone will say cut spending…but the biggest expenditures are defense, medicare and social security. Some will say cut medicare/social security…sounds good until it affects your mom/dad/aunt/uncle (baby boomers or earlier) already receiving those checks who did not have time to save/invest in other retirement instruments. Sounds good until even people in there 50s (such as myself) with IRAs/mutual funds/401ks look at our portfolios and determine that we don’t have the funds we thought that we would have and really do need the additional funds that social security provides. I am a mature and (try to stay) well informed voter after reading all the proposals/plans/views of the country and world by the candidates, I plan to support OBama….he has not been in the Senate for 25 years, but in some ways I think that is a good thing. Check McCains record and tell me what he has done..beside McCain-Fiengold. As far as qualifications…the Constitution states that the President must be at least 35 and be a natural born citizen. The purpose being that anyone…including those reading these comments…could be President. I thought that what this country was about. If you as a voter deem that you want more it is your privilege, to say I would also like 25 years of experience..etc…but too many people want to say OBama is not qualified…I beg to differ…because a President should also be able to inspire the nation to make the impossible possible. I served in the military with some of the military advisers he has and having Warren Buffet sitting in with his economic team this week sounds like a person who knows how to obtain advice to make policy decisions. I am not afraid of change and look forward to letting the new generation lead this country….Push forward with John McCain and chances are 4 or 8 years from we will be going in the same direction with the same problems…and will probably be at war with Iraq.

After issuing several challenges for Barack to visit Iraq/Afgan and insisting that he meet with Gen. Petraeus. Unfortunately, for McCain; sometimes you got to be cafeful of the things you wish for. The Obama campaign could’ve not drafted a better outcome. Bush sends someone to talk to Iran. Maliki wants a 16 month timetable. In the news, pics of Obama/Petraeus; McCain/Bush Sr. in golf cart; Obama/3pt. Shot with Soldiers; McCain/Standing if front of row of cheese. The McCain camp received some light – Obama didn’t meet with the wounded troops in Germany because he didn’t want it to be turned into a Campaign Trip, since his senate staffers had already returned back to US. McCain should not comment on this any further let the grass roots run this big time. If he does it will show that he’s using the troops in the election.

So Barack Obama met with Gordon Brown. The same Gordon Brown who is as Socialist as Barack and will likely be out of office in the next General Election. The British voters have finally woken up to the fact that they cannot afford the Labour Parties’ handouts viz a viz Obama/Pelosi and, after 12 years of being royally screwed, Britain is moving back to the right.

Barack Obama would be a disaster if elected president of this great country.
Inexperienced and socialist is a scary recipe.

Strange things. McCain and the RNC talking heads have been banging away on Fox about opening up the outer shelf for Drilling for oil and touting how safe it is and no risk of oil spills. McCain was so for it that he had made plans to fly out to an oil rig in the Gulf for a Photo op and to speak on the subject of drilling and how safe it is.

He then canceled his scheduled trip out to rig set for 4 days after the hurricane. The reason he gave what the weather was too bad. Strange that normal flights to the rigs in the area were restarted the day after the hurricane and weather was clear in the area and out at sea less than 48 hours after the hurricane. But what did change was there were oil spills in Gulf after the storm and the massive oil spill that has parts of the Mississippi closed to present time. Not too good for a photo op. And this is just another subject where McCain was wrong.

For the past month RNC talking heads stated on Fox without being corrected by the Fox host that there have been many oil spills in the Gulf after major storms. But now even Fox hasn’t said much about the spills or since the spills, Drilling off the coast. McCain needs to stop making bad policy positions. Maybe he should take a page out of the bush play book and follow Obama’s lead.

He is also 71 and as of the last federal Centers the average life span of a healthy male is 74.2. So if you are voting republican make sure you agree with the vice president’s views.

I watch all the news chanels. I watch Fox programs such as Hannity & Coombs. This is just one of the programs that is definetly slanted toward the republicans. Every day Hannity spews all kinds of dirt and lies about Obama, nothing ever good, always bad. But that is understandable now that I heard Bush’s press secretary say that the white house regularly sent out memos to Fox about talking points. It is a a disgrace to profess to being fair and balanced.

Of all the goofs McCain has made, you hardly ever report them.

I hope this letter starts you on the road to actually being fair and balanced.. HaHa

Liberal media my A$$, sure Senator Obama has been getting more press, most of it however has been a public beating. Every word, pause or nuance is disected and criticized when Obama speaks. However much of this week and prior, Mr. McCain has been devouring his own shoes and barely a whisper from the corporate controlled media.

You want fair and balanced than talk about this story for a while here. The double standard here sticks.

Fox is the McCain network, so I find these complaining bloggers quite interesting!!
Obama did acknowledge that the surge helped make it possible to send soldiers home. What more does he need to say?
Obama could have visited the troops perhaps, but he has said repeatedly that their contributions have been enormous and very much appreciated.
Obama visited many of the same countries that McCain visited – AND the trip was at the recommendation of McCain. Then when he went, McCain complained about his going on this trip.
The polls show Obama up by 9 as of today, so as of this morning, the pundits aren’t saying that the trip did not help Obama anymore. After he gets back to addressing the ecnonmy, he will be 11-12 points up. He can win this without Hillary’s complainers.

Let’s see….Obama GOES to Kuwait and hits a “3 pointer” for openers, while hanging with the troops….He treks to Afghanistan while Bush forgets his cowboy diplomacy and sends diplomat to engage (Oh, I’m sorry – “observe”) talks with Iran…..He lands in Iraq (”this is where the trip can get tricky”) and get’s a ENDORSEMENT of troop withdrawal from the Bush installed Iraqi regime!…..He meets the generals (”this is where the trip can get tricky”). He get’s a helicopter ride from Petreus who grins from ear to ear as he gives this “lightweight” and “unqualified” Senator- the “I’m no dummy..I know who my next boss will be..” Tour of Iraq….Before leaving, he goes to the “don’t help the candidate in any way” US embassy and gets a rousing welcome from a thousand US personnel in Iraq…He jets to Jordan (the press corp are here so NOW is “where the trip can get tricky”) to meet a King who doubles-back from US just to spend a little face-time with BO. After the meeting, the King gives BO a lift to the airport- PERSONALLY…..He arrives in Israel (”now this is where the trip can get tricky”) and meets with everybody who’s anybody in Israeli politics. This includes a heartfelt welcome from Israeli patriarch, Simon Peres…..Next he has the “Audacity” to actually meet with the Palestinian leader (”this is where the trip can get tricky”) and delivers a written request to free children of US woman, who are held captive by their father in Palestine….He tops off his visit by stopping at Wall in Israel, gives “sit down” with conservative Israeli newspaper and it’s off to Europe!….In Germany , Bush Ally, Prime Minister Merkel (”trip can get tricky”) suggests that BO should give her a back rub!….BO gives speech in front of 200K Germans who all seem to know English and is a hit in front of crowd waving US FLAGS (oh well, so much for “flag pin” attacks)…He fly’s to France where he holds a joint press conference with French Leader whom John McCain has praised for being more pro-American than the typical Frenchys….He leaves with a kiss and an endorsement from Sarkozy and fly’s to England…It’s here where the Conservative Candidate admires BO’s pace and tells BO that he needs to take time to hit “the beach”….He hits 9 nations, spells out his national security agenda, asks for help from German people and multiple European leaders, threatens Iran with the promise that “pressure will increase” if they don’t agree to stand down on nukes now, rather than later….. He meets with 3 network anchors who are determined to upstage each other and establish their gravitas in the “I’ll get him…” interviews….He also sits down with ABC Nightline, CNN, Time, Newsweek, Meet the Press and Fox News, ALL of which are itching to bring down the “upstart” with gotcha questions including DOZENS of questions about “the surge”….Look, I know that it does not fit the neocon foxnews narrative but…..THE GUY HAD A GREAT TRIP. The sad reality is that there’s no way that McCain could have pulled that trip off without making us cringe.

Oh! How easily we forget. This so-called war was not started for a SURGE. The real focus of this so-called war got lost over six years ago. Nothing has been accomplish, there are no weapons of mass destruction. We did not go in to Iraq for a SURGE. It is disgusting to say mission accomplish when you don’t even know what the mission is. One thing I know for sure ,the mission wasn’t about a SURGE. So if this is your idea of experience forget it. We got enough of experience in Washington D.C. now and look where the hell we are because of it………… We don’t need any more experience, we have had it with EXPERIENCE. McCain has been in the Senate for years! What the hell has he done? NOTHING JUST LIKE THE REST OF THEM………

Comment by Ben Eshun - UK

McCain hasn’t got any thing to offer the US. All he is about is the surge and war. He should admit that war is the thing of the past. WHile Obama is trying to end the war and instill peace, McCain is still urging for war and to keep the US troops there. How many does it want to see killed before he comes back to his senses to find a better solution to this situation America is in. McCain should be ashamed of himself for lying to the world. The surge is not the cause of the recent event in Iraq. The immeadiate cause is when the citizens of Iraq decided to attack the foreign fighter. What McCain should be telling the America people is that, the Iraqis themselve fought the emimies before the surge was implement. How could the surge work when after three or fours years of fighting in Iraq with all the amours and super machines, the foreign fighters resisted. The world is tied of war and Obama is the guys to bring us the peace we need.

It is refreshing to hear a “professed” conservative to actually support Obama. As an independent, I find both candiates are flawed but am more confortable with Obama’s vision for the future of this country. McCain tends to want to continue the failed policies of the Cheney/Bush Regime.

Are the Fox watchers better off because of the current social and economic conditions?–I think not!! Sometimes for some people, it is difficult to receive the truth. Frankly, I am surprise that FOX News would allow a truthful article be written under their banner.

Hi Ron, here is one sentence you said: “………………………
those European countries who would like to see the United States play a weakened role in world affairs……….” (I would say who would LOVE to….)
You are very observing and you just hit a right nail on the head of those narrow-minded/short-shighted followers of Obama!
Those guys should wake up and take another closer look at their IDOL,
who actually has nothing to be qualified to run for the highest position of this great nation, except his smooth talking lips. His practical experiences in the field of both domestic and foreign affairs are eventurely thiner than his own skin!
His CHANGE and JUDGEMENT are just the classic political propaganda as
a delusive means to his blindly supporters!
It’s less than 100 days to go for the decision, let’s THINK, THINK and THINk it over…….Do we really have to be possesed by the mentality of “vote for any one but REPS.”?
No, we shouldn’t! Otherwise the consequence would be so unknown and so fatally to all of us!
The bottom line here is that we may consider and use “less evil/less risk”
as a measure for our limited option of choice!

Are you suggesting that we should give a blind eye to what McCain’s party has done to this country and vote him in? This is TRULY Delusional!!!! What kind of message would that send to our elected Officials? Does the bahavior of our elected officals not matter while they are in office?

Would you be willing to give that same Blind eye to the Democrats? PLEASE people let us not vote based only on our party affiliation. Let us vote on what is best for the country.

Hi Michael, if you would like read my comment’s last paragraph one more time, you
could have better understanding to what the “less evil/less risk” means to the voters.
Your last sentance stated as “……..Let us vote on what is the best for the country.” which eventually is meant the same thing as I said in my last paragraph.
Ever since the emergence of both McCain and Obama, I try hard not to let these factors such as Dems/Reps, White/Black, Muslim/Chrostian disturbing my observations and evaluations, but focusing on these two individuals only; their background, educations, experiences, knowledges, leadership, etc. are the areas
being checked for my own vote.
Obama, I noticed that he is one of the kind, perhaps one out of the millions, but he is way too short of the needed experiences to be the head of this nation, his ideas of CHANGE and JUDGEMENT are just sound as a old political slogan. His abroad
trip

DC,

I suppose you think George Bush was a “experienced” president. And do you see what that “experience” has gotten us? The argument about Obama’s “inexperience” does not hold ANY water compared to the many failed policies inflicted upon us by the “experienced” George Bush..

Hi Michael,
As we are approaching the general election day for all of us, I really don’t pay any attention on the soon-to-be-histroy of Bush’s group, it’s going to be as a cancelled
check of yesterday, good or bad, yet it will be over soon. I don’t let the mentality of “like or dislike” sticks with me, I only compare the current candidate’s overall qualifications to each other, as the similar way as to hiring some one to fit a speclfic job’s position.
I have found that Obama is one of the kind of guys, may be one out of millions. He is good enough and qualified to do almost anything, but just not having enough needed EXPERIENCES to be the HEAD of this nation at this time. He is not ready for
2008, period. Yet he colud be in much better maturity of polical know-how level to run for the highest/toughest positon in the year of 2012!
As to McCain’s status, this aged, dislikable, hot-temper, stubborn fomer P.O.W and senior senator, who has dealt with numerous/verious of issues and results in the last decades. Since we are so desperately for the CHANGE or the JUDGEMENT, (please DON’T laugh!) He would be the one to make it because of his EXPERIENCES and DETERMINATIONS. The reason is very simple, should he got elected this time, he will make any possible efforts and changes to get that “monkey” of his back; the monkey of the image of the “BUSH’S THIRD TERM”! And it will be almost impossible
letting himself to make the same mistakes as Bush did, and the positve CHANGE(S) is a MUST for him. Another advantage for him is that the failures of Bush/Reps. can be served as a clear giude-line for him to make the right JUDGEMENT and an adequate corrections or the CHANGE(S).
Okay, you may say that it’s a wishful thinking, but if YOU were in McCain’s shoes after moving in the white house, I bet you would have the same ideas in your mind
as well.
Have a good one!

DC,

You clearly see the flaws in both candidates and you have decied that you are more comfortable with McCain’s flaws. I simply think McCain is wrong on the war and will not support him and his party’s willigness to keep our troops in Iraq in an attempt to clean up George Bush’s many blunders. It is not fair to our troops nor is it fair to us as taxpayers to have to pay for Bush’s blunders.

For B.Obama to speculate about mistakes John McCain might make is comical. His party and he have endorsed an energy policy that would force oil companies to drill for oil where there may not be much with the same ecological downside as would exist with greater possibility of success elsewhere and the same financial costs as well. So, the environment would suffer and the oil companies would lose money. There would be little or no more oil available for the consumer.
