The Bourbon Room

McCain’s Builds “House(s)” for Obama Economic Attacks

CHESTER, VA. — 11:12 a.m.

At Barack Obama and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine’s outside, picnic-style town hall at John Tyler Community College. If Kaine is not Obama’s running mate — we don’t know yet — he IS the winner of this week’s twist-the-knife-in-with-the-talking-point award (since I just invented this award, we’ll see if it becomes a Bourbon Room fixture).

On Fox and on CNN, Kaine hit McCain for his vague answer to Jonathan Martin of Politico on the relatively simple question of how many houses he and wife Cindy own. Here’s the link to JMart’s story: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0808/12685.html

Kaine said this on Fox: “People are trying to hold on to the ohe one house that they do have and we have a presidential candidate who can’t even, you, I guess, count that high to figure out how many houses he has.”

Obama’s Chicago considers this zinger a bulls-eye within a bulls-eye….a tart amplification of the campaign talking point that McCain’s wealth is an emerging issue and may present an opening to undermine McCain’s “maverick” image.

The campaign is seriously considering (and quite possibly prepping at this hour) a TV ad on this topic. With or without the ad, the campaign and DNC will flog the “houses” story relentlessly today.

CORRECTION: The Architectural Digest spread is about a home the McCain’s owned in north Phoenix but no longer own. McCain is in Sedona, Ariz., today. But that home is NOT the one featured in this link.
Link:http://www.architecturaldigest.com/homes/features/archive/mccain_article_072005

After McCain’s assessment at Rick Warren’s forum on Saturday that “$5 million” is a decent threshold for describing the rich in America — even though McCain quickly sought to retract it — the Obama campaign believes McCain has given it fodder to criticize his image and ability to handle the economy.

This will be a fundamental building block of Obama-DNC attacks on McCain at the Democratic convention.

Quick note: Kaine, in his just-concluded introduction of McCain here, DID NOT mention the McCain houses issues. But he did say a vote for McCain’s economic policies was the real “risk” in this election.

Obama talking now about economy and has mentioned foreclosure crisis and has yet to mention McCain’s memory loss on houses.

At 11:05 a.m., Obama hit McCain on the “$5 million” comment, saying, as he has before that McCain meant “if you’re making $3 million, you’re in the middle class.” He also reprised Phil Gramm’s “mental recession” comments.

At 11:07 a.m. Obama said McCain said yesterday that the “economy was fundamentally strong.”

At 11:08 a.m. Obama mentioned McCain’s inability to describe how many houses he had and referring JMart to his staff. “So they asked his staff and they said ‘at least four.’ At least four! Now think about that. If you don’t know how many hosues you have, it’s not surprising you might think the economy is fundamentally strong. By the way, the answer is John McCain has seven homes. We can’t afford eight more years, or four more years, or one mor year of the same failed economic policies that George Bush has put in place.”

Sometimes there is a disconnect between how hard Obama advisers want to drive a negative message and how far Obama himself is willing to push it. Not today. Obama hit McCain between the eyes. Absent some vice presidential developments, which I do not expect, the soundbite above will drive Obama’s story today.

Well i would much rather have a Presdent that is not sure of the number of houses he
has than one that voted to let babies out of the womb lay and die.
let’s get real here and figure out what’s really important.

“Wow, you really think our economy is a Disaster, you have got to be kidding.
Just 10 yrs ago, the dow closed just over 10K. It’s well over 11K today.
Interest rates were higher and the unemployment rate averaged 4.5%. Today it is slightly higher but I would suggest that is mostly due to the high cost of eneregy making many businesses having to do cut backs to adjust for the increase in added transportation costs and the auto industry hit as well as more americans move from SUV’s trucks etc to small economy cars.
Who is responsible for the high cost of energy? Nancy Pelosis promised us lower fuel prices 2 yrs ago. What have they done? They’ve had control of congress 2 yrs. Bush has pressed for drilling legislation 6 times and it has been defeated by the DEMS.”

McCains strong point is foreign policy, his weakest is economy. Pick Mitt Romney as either VP or somewhere high up in the administration, then you’ve got foreign policy covered as well as the economy. Obama offers neither of these two things, a lawyer does not learn economics at university (and i know this for a fact!).

Comment by Toneo

I agree Connie and so do the facts!!! the economy is still growing despite the doom and gloom mainstream medias reports!! You are also right about the babys who “are not really persons” according to “Reverend” Obama. “Thats not really crying your hearing, thats not blood coming from the nose and mouth, thats not eyes that are filled with tears and pain, on REAL persons can have these” Barack, you are one sick individual and I believe people are starting to see it…
” Hope and change” except for the most defenseless, “Hope and Change” as you check your air pressure in your tire. “hope and change” as taxs increase and revenues dive….. I don’t care how many homes a man owns!!!!!! JUST LEAVE MINE ALONE OBAMA!!!

Comment by Hilary Smith

McCain is of the ruling-class and he will protect ruling-class interests, not the interests of the everyman. McCain cannot be trusted. If you’re a working-class person who cares about keeping a roof over his head, you’d better do yourself a favor and vote for Obama.

Comment by Michael in Atlanta

For those who can’t remeber how many house’s they own, the economy has been great. But few investor’s in the stock market have made any money. Many more people have lost their homes to foreclosures under Bush’s watch. And more have lost their jobs to outsourcing.

So, for the elite like John McCain, Dick(Halliburton)Cheney and George(Oil Company)Bush things are great. But for the rest of us, not so great.

Comment by Old and In the Way

McCain is an old, rich man. It’s like he’s driving the RNC caddy slowly in the fast lane w/ his blinker on. He wants to get over to the right lanes but he can’t.

Comment by Cross Mooradian

What do you suppose Karl Rove would have done to John Kerry with this one? Any bets on whether the Dems have the brains or balls to drive this one home all the way to November?

I bet not.

Comment by gabrowne

If this doesn’t finish off McCain, i don’t know what will. 5 million income is considered rich. A picture spread in the digest. Unable to remember where his homes are or how many.
I think the DNC is going to do to Mccain what Rove did to Kerry’s 4 houses.
I Think this will be over by the end of RNC convention.

Comment by Phil

That’s just like Kaine….he has a huge budget deficit in Virginia threatening costs in education to close on the billions Virginia is short because of his lofty calculation of tax revenue. Kaine can’t even get the transportation problem here addressed and does nothing but point fingers at Republicans.

Kaine is an inflammatory figure who has done little in Virginia. NoBama can have him! Oh yes he has also created Virginia as a sanctuary state for illegal aliens.

In view of one of the main issues of the election…… the economy. A good business man, capable of leading the country through a tough time of economic problems, is what the U.S needs. Owning more than one home, shows good business savy. With FINANCIAL RESPONSIBITIY and good business sense, not wealth, an average American could also own more than one home. I am both a Realtor and R.E. Investor. I have witnessed customers with nothing ,start out small, buy and sell , and end up with multiple investment properties. Both nominees have a substantial income and worth. Does Obama have investments? If not , do we want him leading our country, with any hope of straightening out our economy?

Comment by john

McCain’s campaign staff counts 4 houses across the country, but Newsweek and the Washington Post count 7. Which is it John McCain? — Boy, McCain’s maverick “straight talk” is just so refreshing, err, well entertaining anyway.

Comment by acarponzo

Maybe McCain should give up all of his worldly possessions and wear worn out shoes like the other guy. I don’t know, is this anon issue? We will see over at the real-time poll at http://www.bop-o-meter.com. We’ll see if Obama supporter can get some traction on this issue and push McCain’s total over 200,000. Hope it doesn’t backfire.

Comment by john baguta

John McCain the old man, who is going to be 72 has lost half of his arm and brain side and cannot remember even how many homes he owns, and still want to become our Commnader-in-Chief? Wake up America, this gentleman is getting 100% disbaility for the last 20 years is not even fit for our National Guard duty.

Comment by Patty

I guess it does not matter that Obama got a super sweet deal from a criminal like Tony Rezko on his home… Is the pot calling the kettle black here… Who cares how many homes John McCain and his wife own… Can Obama not come up with anything better to talk about.. ? Another case of Obama’s lack of substance…

Comment by Charlie

Connie, couldn’t agree with you more. OBAMA, KAINE, and the rest of the throng need to get a clue
that real people out here are looking at what is going and being said. It sure is funny to me that
these gents seem to think that there multi millions are the same as the other guys, but beside that
lets get on to the real issues, Security, Energy, Taxes, Jobs, etc. Stop the childrens games.

Connie that is plan wrong. Mr. Obama in no way stands for such a thing! He has two beautiful girls, and would never think of not giveing medical attention to any child at any time. They just twisted that and spined it out of pro portion. He ecknowledge their was already a bill in place, and this one they wanted to push through would have hurt Rov Vs. wade, an witth a sister who was raped by a family member I understand how important it is to protect womens right to choose for herself what she can medically, and emotionally handle for the rest of her life! You smart enough to understand that it isn’t onlyl up to Polosi in what happens in congress! Fillibusters are a constant threat in congress to day. Progress has been blocked by both Repub’s and idiot Dem’s. But when your looking at a president, you at least want one in touch with the people who actually know how many homes he owes, where they are located, what he pays for tax’s and etc. Now for the drilling thing! The oil company’s already own thousand, and thousands of lease’s to drill for oil, They could have been drilling for oil for years on these leased lands. These oil comp. aren’t all american oil comp either connie, do you want to hand over our oceans, sea’s and land to more oil comp. who haven’t used up what they already own here in the us? Sounds to me like you been listening to the Spin/gossip instead of doing your investigation into these things? Just yesterday Keith Obeirman on MsM showed a clip of John Mccain agreeing with a woman that the “DRAFT” is needed! Heard it with my own ears! Now if he once again says he didn’t hear her question, and just agreed to it————I’m seriousely calling him on it, as this is about the 7 th time he’s done this, and we can’t have a president who doesn’t listen at the presidential level. However, if he did mean it, and ans how he really meant, I’m raiseing money to send my grandkids, niece’s and nephews to canada! I won’t give not one more family member up to a dead end, no account war like Iraq! Remember this, we need to Pulll our goverment together, and the way chuck hagel has already with other dems steped up to talk to Obama, and in times backed him, he’s our best bet in getting something done! Also keep in mind Dems are going to hold a whole lot more gov. office’s this year! Do you really think Mccains can down Rove Vs Wade, or rally the world around him to help U.S. do anything in the years to come? think about this, and what man can gett the most done, help how we look to the whole world, Who wil compromise when needed, but stand still and firm when it’s necessary. It’s not about just a couple of things connie. It’s about the whole package. I could trues a parent of a small child to do what would be best for my small child, because he understands what I need. I can truest some one to do whats best for the houseing market, and me if they have been low income. Do you get my point!

@connie

Well I would much rather have a President that can fix our economy than one that intends to let our children die in a meaningless 100-year war. Our American soldiers, our children, will die under GOPuppet McCain’s administration.

Opposing a bill because is has undesirable amendments that may take away rights from pregnant mothers is not voting to let babies out of the womb lay and die. That’s a pro-life skew. It obviously is not the intent of the senator’s vote. I could easily say GOPuppet McCain wants to drug and shackle pregnant mothers to hospital beds for 9 months to ensure the lives of unborn children, but its not true. Not to mention you are comparing a pro-life argument to houses… apples and oranges. Yes he’s pro-choice. We know. Has nothing to do with this article.

And as for the oil, we all know what the right thing to do is. We need to remove our dependance on oil. Obama doesn’t want to blow our oil reserves with no plan after they run out. Why is it that GOPuppet McCain is demanding drill here drill now but has not provided a clear vision of what it would take to get us out of this mess? Sounds an awful a lot like that botched Iraq War strategy.

And regardless, Obama HAS reached over the table and supported some drilling as long as there’s a clear comprehensive PLAN to move away from oil. GOPuppet McCain is just responding to string tugs. He doesn’t care about the middle class and having 10+ houses pretty much explains why. The man is quite out of touch.

it’s nice to be john mccain

it’s nice to have a rich wife; especially one whose father built a business by monopolizing the right to distribute budweiser in phoenix.

it’s nice when you can prevent the senate commerce committee from holding hearings on monopolies in distribution, too.

it’s even nicer when you can run around and tell everyone that you don’t know how many houses you own; i guess it’s because you’re not that good at economics

When was the last time John McCain filled up his own gas..
McCain’s answer “Oh, I don’t remember. Now there’s Secret Service protection. But I’ve done it for many, many years. I don’t recall and frankly, I don’t see how it matters.”

Talk about disconnected.

The truth about John McCain

William Black a former government regulator investigating the the Lincoln Savings and Loan / Keating 5 / John & Cindy McCain Scandal said:”Senator McCain was unique among the five Senators in having a direct financial conflict of interest involving direct investments.” He also said this about Senator McCain: “On judgment, ethics, and truthfulness he (Senator McCain) failed this test as badly as you can fail”

“God Dammit Johnny no wonder your flunking” A quote from John McCain’s father (a Navy Captain at the time) after catching son Johnny goofing off while visiting him at the U.S. Naval academy according to Frank Gamboa John McCain’s former academy roommate.

John McCain is just another spoiled rich kid wanting to bully us around. Sound familiar? We have just had 7 and a half years of it. This guy has made a career out of his bad or at least unlucky flying ability. John McCain is no war hero. He simply got a plane shot out from under him that he probably wasn’t qualified to fly in the first place, but when your grandfather was an Admiral and you father is an Admiral there aren’t many people in the Navy that are going to risk their careers and tell you the truth. So unqualified little Johnny gets to fly and gets shot down. Wow thats a great big surprise! He has been riding it ever since, while true heroes suffer in under funded and under staffed VA hospitals. What a dirt bag.

Drilling legislation? Are you seriously suggesting that drilling legislation would have an effect on our gas prices? Get a clue. We have enough recoverable oil that’s not already being drilled to cover maybe 5% of our daily usage. If you want to talk about legislation that would move us closer to solutions for this looming disaster, talk about regulating fuel economy standards. Big auto could be putting out 70 mpg vehicles right now, but they aren’t taking the hint from buyers – oh wow, hybrid Tahoes and Escalades. A little push in the right direction could be just what they need.

You gotta be kidding me. And I am replying to this poster, Connie. McCain has the gall to accuse Obama of being an elitist when he and his family have so much wealth that he doesn’t even know nor cares how many houses he owns. And you are accusing Nancy Pelosi of not taking this country forward when you have had 8 years of Bush administration who has basically ruined this country. How dare you? I sometimes wonder – who you are loyal to – America as a country or Republican Party. Your answer gives us all a hint on where your loyalties lie. If you are truly patriotic, you would give another party a chance. And stop with abortion rights already. What does that have anything to do with govering this country? Bush was anti-abortion but he has no clue how to govern this country. What does that tell you? I do not consider myself neither a Democrat nor a Republican. But we really need a change. At the moment, anybody other than the Republican party will suffice.

Comment by Will T

Gonna leave the abortion issue alone, but ask you to prove this claim without referrencing a book that uses the author for fact references or trolls in forums to prove facts.

The price of the Dow has nothing to do with the strength of the overall economy since the dow is tied to inflation. So if the price of bread is twice as much the economies doing twice as good? come on.

Pelosi and the Dems may have had control of congress for the last 2 years but the Repubs have taken the wussy way out with 90 some philibusters just to make a case of a bad congress. The Repubs have had control of things from 2000 to 2006 when the cost of a barrel of oil was around $30. The Repubs have done nothing either and have blocked all attempts to control the cost of gasoline. And imaging that now that oil is $120 a barrel the Russians have money for a military, They were broke when bush took office.

I want to have a debate about what to do about the issues our country faces but lets start with some truth.

Wait! Hold on A minute!! McCain being touted as an elitist! Obama being touted as a saviour? why don’t all of you people wise up and quit your damn whining about these idiots and drop your party affiliations and vote for America. Find a true hard working down to earth grass roots person who is currently in the same boat as us, who has to work 3 jobs to save his home, has to eat “generic” brand foods because those are the cheapest, drive a 25 year old vehicle with over 100k miles on the speedometer and still manages to pay his bills on time and juggle all of this and spend quality time with his wife and kids. Screw these idiots, all their out for is to bend America over and give it to her without so much as a kiss and a promise.

Let’s talk more about the house of the Lord, not, that Obama sat in for twenty years. Actually a church-of-hate, Yobama sat and listened to Reverend Jerimiah Wright spew his racist, bigoted message for twenty long years. Not counting Self-loathing liberal green-tea types, no American should want to see an avowed racist whose father was a Muslim extremist, in the White House.

Comment by DoTheMath

My sources say 10 homes. Maybe the condominiums aren’t included in the 7 figure.

Comment by jim

the point isnt that mccain is too dumb to know how many houses he has. im not worried about that. its that he has enough money for 7 houses. the size of his wallet blinds him from seeing how bad things really are for lower class blue collar workers like myself. also, arizonas economy is fine because everybody is leaving the midwest and moving there. we need someone who knows how to handle a plummeting economy such as illinois’. and connie, only worry about your own baby. a woman ( used to think the opposite but my wife has effectively proved this to me) should have the right to do what she wants to her own body and a baby is part of a woman’s body for quite a while after conception. there is a point past which it is a selfsustaining human, but while it is still part of the mother abortion should be your choice and if you dont like it dont get one.

Comment by TJ Rodgers

This one is going to stick. They have enough traction to label McCain a Kerry-ish elitist, and rightfully so. It reminds me of George Bush senior being amazed by a checkout scanner. The Obama=Paris Hilton thing is going to look petty in comparison, cause McCain looks confused, remote and callous here.

What McCain will do is get a ranch and get publicity shots of him removing some brush. It’ll look ridiculous, with his clearly non-calloused hands, and backfire like John Kerry hunting.

Comment by TJ Rodgers

How is Cindy’s wealth even attributable to John since they have a pre-nuptual agreement that John has NO rights to her wealth?

Did the Heinz wealth (that Kerry had no right to) make a difference? Yes, and it will here too.

McCain looks like an elitist and he is….just like Kerry. Face reality.

The fact that such a flip-flopping, confused, intellectual wet noodle like McCain with a history of scandal and infidelity is even in the same polling ballpark with Obama is a really sad commentary on the state of this country, intellectually, ethically, basic knowledgewise and not to mention gullibility-wise. The odds of a President McCain *not* bringing in more corrupt incompetents to continue the sorry legacy of Bush are slim to non-existent. Whatever complaints there might be about Obama’s experience are absolutely irrelevant weighted against having someone coming in who will very likely get good, competent, ethical and smart-smart people to want to come back to government, help run the country, and perhaps undo at least some of the damage done during the past several years.

Connie you’re just kidding about the DOW right? When Clinton came into office the DOW was 3,253. When he left it was 10,587, an increase of 225%.

Since Bush has been in office now for seven years, the Dow has increased by a measly 852 points a gain of 7%.

Look at GDP for a measure of growth in the economy. Track it back to Kennedy if you want to. No Republican president has met the average growth of the Democratic presidents for any four year period. No Democratic president has ever fallen as low as the Republican average.

It’s clear which party is better for the economy.

I continue to be confused by the consistant notion of “failed economic policies of Bush”. Agree or disagree with being there at all, the current administration has spent a lot on a war, no question. However, war tends to be good for an economy. Not a war monger, just pointing out a historical fact. Also, this administration had nothing to do with the current housing issue. I am in the industry and this was fueled by the private sector, not a government “policy”. We have had great growth for the majority of the last 8 years, and continue to grow right now. Unemployment is up a bit, but still very low historically. Energy costs are way up, but the current issues are a result of several past administrations and not just this one. Government spending is my single biggest point of contention with the administration, but everything I see from Obama sure leans to that going even higher. So, what policies have been in place that Obama will change to “fix” the economy. The economy in a capitalist economy is driven by the private sector, and can be assisted by lower taxes and lower government spending. Republicans typically win that tug-a-war.

So let’s take a second and compare the real estate holding of Mccain and NOscama-

Let’s assume in all reality McCain doesn’t know how many houses he has. Since most are investment properties that would not necessarily be unusual. Ask a Wal-Mart exec how many stores they have. Since they are opening new ones all the time, knowing the exact number each day doesn’t impact opening another store or the continued success of an existing store so its kind of like memorizing state capitols – who the hell cares – knowing it changes absolutely nothing.

Let’s look at the NOscama house situation. Yep, he’s an ordinary guy who owns just one. Unfortunate for Noscama however is that he has now opened up real estate as a campaign topic he will soon regret as we are about the hear in agonizing detail exactly how Noscama qualified for a mortgage he could not afford. Can you spell R-E-Z-K-O.

Yeah that’s right folks; the convicted felon, slum lord, thug is soon to be sentenced played an integral role in Mr. & Mrs. NOscama getting their sweetheart mortgage deal which they otherwise were not able to afford. STAY TUNED FOR THIS ONE – DETAILS WILL BE FORTHCOMING ABOUT EVERY 5 SECONDS!!!

Most Americans can’t relate to a man so rich that he forgets the number of houses he has. What’s also obvious from McCain’s recent comment that middle class goes up to $5,000,000 is that McCain can’t relate to most Americans. He’s too rich and too insulated in his bizarro world view to understand our problems. He would be a terrible president.

Comment by Andy Toh

I think this campaign needs to stop being about “I care more than him” or “he is raising taxes more than I am”, he’s not patriotic enough, he’s too old…either way, this negative campaigning is distracting, and maiming our abilities to make sound decisions about which candidate to support where our economy is concerned. I say let’s get back to substance! Point is, comparing our economy today to the past purely on how wall street performs is pointless…we need to assess the economy as a whole and the ability of our policies to create new jobs, close the rich-poor divide, and let society rise as a whole.

As intelligent sensible people, we all need to do our research and understand the potential IMPACTS of each candidate’s plan…THAT’s what matters more..I felt that this particular article i read this morning actually gives me a pretty good idea on Obama’s plans for our economy:

read this article i am referring to here

There is always a temptation to sway between left and right, black or white. What I see in Obama’s plans is a hybrid of both conservative, and liberal economic principles, it is refreshing in that it is fundamentally pragmatic and focused on a solution that is very well integrated and thought through, untainted by partisan politics. More importantly, it offers some new approaches to the new challenges we are facing.

Admit it or not, our economy IS in shambles, and it is facing challenges that are unique to our times. Our budget deficit is NOT just another pointless number. Our rising unemployment rates are not fictitious. Drilling is not going to have any impact on the real and present dependence on oil…commitment, not just lip service, to a full policy and investment strategy focused on alternative fuels is the way to go. On labor, with unskilled work being shipped abroad, we need to drive new sectors that can continue to offer opportunities for these folks, with minimal learning curve.

Instead of labeling a candidate’s plans for it’s ideological foundations, we need to draw lessons from history, while understanding how our times today are different from before, and inject some current thinking that would allow us to break the stagnation in our economy….Both McCain and Obama are patriots, and both are good candidates, but upon closer inspection, I am finding that Obama’s plan looks very encouraging and most importantly, stratigically sound.

I shall be doing more research on McCain’s plans and am hoping to find this kind of non-partisan, innovative thinking about how to solve our current slowdown…I hope we all do this research, because clearly we cannot apply the same-old approach to our economy. The context, and drivers of growth in this new global climate have shifted, and with that, our policies would need to concurrently evolve. Right now, Obama’s ideas do seem very refreshing and relevant indeed. Key challenge for Obama, is how he is going to translate these complex and really clever concepts for everyday people….same applies for McCain…he needs to stop attacking and actually explaining to us why he believes his plan would work. It’s not just about lowering taxes….it’s about a more evenly distributed equity in our economy…

This time, we cannot allow negative politics and to color our decision….

I don’t want NANCY PELOSI telling me that she’s NOT ALLOWING ‘A VOTE’ because she’s looking to SAVE THE WORLD! ! ! If I were you Barack…I’d go to Africa and become the first ‘ARAB-AMERICAN’ PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES OF AFRICA! ! ! You’re nothing more thatn a PUPPET who knows HOW TO READ A TELEPROMPTER…but CAN’T THINK AND SPEAK FOR HIMSELF WITHOUT A ‘CUE’ from the Beaurocratic ‘DEMS’! ! ! Your AMBITION precedes EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO….and CHANGE , CHANGE & ‘CHANGE-YOUR MIND-AGAIN-BARACK’ is really what you’re all about….as you CHANGE EVERY POSITION that you’ve ever
said that you’ve STOOD FOR! ! ! You’re a CEREBRAL, BLITHERING JOKE! ! !…and STOP PUTTING THIS COUNTRY AND IT’S TRUE CITIZENS DOWN…when you turn around and bastardize your OWN HALF-BROTHER who lives on only a DOLLAR AND DAY….as you run around in your PLANES, and COUNTRIES…EATING LIKE A KING, ACTING LIKE A KING…AND LIVING LIKE A KING! ! ! You SHOULD REALLY BE TOTALLY ASHAMED OF YOUR OWN HYPOCRACY! ! ! God help you! ! !…because I, for one….WILL NEVER! ! ! I like making my own choices…and I LIKE FREEDOM TOO MUCH…the VERY ‘CHANGE’ that you want to do is TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE and give (out of OUT TAX MONEY) to other countries, SO THAT WE CAN BECOME A THIRD-WOLD NATION! ! !…and THEY CAN LIVE AS AMERICANS DO NOW! ! !

“Owning more than one home, shows good business savy.” Funny line Mary, except that McCain has never run a business or an investment portfolio. He did it the old fashioned way, he married money to get it. He was only able to get into Annapolis because of his family connections, and at that he nearly didn’t graduate. He only got into politics because of Cindy’s money and connections. Say, now that I think about it, he has a lot in common with Paris Hilton, who would also be nowhere without those family connections.

Comment by slarrow

Couple of points: first, McCain’s campaign has already incredulously asked if Obama seriously wants to talk about personal houses. “Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?”–McCain spokesman Brian Rodgers. Stupid move by Democrats here.

Second, certainly drilling (or even the announcement of drilling) will have an effect on oil prices. Has no one noticed that the recent drop in oil-per-barrel prices commenced soon after President Bush rescinded the executive moratorium on drilling? I’m confident that letting the congressional ban expire would similarly cause the price to drop. To those who complain that new sources of oil won’t come online fast enough, I’d respond that the people pricing and buying the oil take those kinds of things into consideration. (They certainly did over the past few weeks.) And to those who think that mean nasty Big Oil made the price jump up to fill their huge wallets at your expense, to what do you attribute the recent price decline? Did Big Oil have a change of heart, or is just another step in the grand conspiracy?

Third, it does seem unusual that oil-hungry companies wouldn’t drill on currently held leases. That is, until you learn that there’s no easily accessible oil in that land! The current leases held are about as valuable as the lumber rights to the salt flats in Utah. The oil companies want rights to drill in places where they might actually be able to get oil. What’s hard to understand about that?

Finally, Obama’s position on the Born Alive bill is going to blow up because he lied about it. When he got caught, he accused others of lying and then kept changing his story. The bottom line is that he thought it more important to protect the right to abortion from even the most glancing of blows than it was to ensure that babies who weren’t supposed to live got the chance to anyway. The facts are against Obama on this one, and if he survives through the convention, it’ll be a millstone around his neck (purposeful allusion there.)

Comment by HOWARD

From what I read, the reason McCain didn’t answer immediately about how many houses he has, is because he and his wife have numerous real estate investments, and McCain wanted to respond with total accuracy.
Obama and his campaign will latch onto anything they can, and mischaracterize it, in order to discredit McCain. Since Obama is dropping in the polls in all 57 STATES. this empty suit will say, or do anything to win. NOBAMA!!!

Dear Major Garret,

You haven’t the ability to write.

Your sentence structure is poor, your ideas are badly organized, and your opening isn’t even a complete sentence.

Your second paragraph begins with an ineffeciently-worded run-on sentence. There are seemingly-purposeful grammatical errors every time you quote Tim Kaine (I can only hope you didn’t add these errors in order to make Kaine look foolish).

The appearance of a “CORRECTION” bulletin is misguided. If a correction was issued, it should not appear halfway through the article. The artical itself should be re-written to accomodate, or highlight, the corrected facts.

Additionally, experienced writers use italics, not capitalization, to highlight specific ideas. Capitalization is used by lovesick teenagers and angry worker ants, usually to force the ‘text’ into feeling ’spoken’. The problem, of course, is that writing and speaking are two different disciplines.

In the “Obama talking now about economy” sentence, you seem to have either forgotten the use of commas or simply transcribed shorthand notes. Late in the article you establish a “minute-by-minute” motif that almost makes the shorthand make sense. It’s a shame you didn’t try to use it throughout article.

FOX News (and the OilPublicans that run the organization) should choose writers who have a command of the English language or, at the very least, decent Editors to fix such glaring mistakes. I don’t profess to be the best writer in the world but I can certainly spot the difference between “guy-with-opinion” and “real journalist”, a distinction made obvious by your use of an exclamation point: exclamation points are used to convey emotion and real journailsts report the news, not comment on it.

Please try harder next time. You might start by choosing a better role model than a President with the vocabulary skills of a fourth grader.

Love,
Seth Asa

Just think: If McCain were “The One,” he could inhabit all his houses at once.

Comment by Gwain Davis

I can only hope that maybe someone on FOX will do some homework on this “houses” thing. For example Edwards has one house that it the equivalent of 10 normal American houses. And for another thing, let so a survey of how many houses are owned by each and every Senator and Congressman, and let’s post their net worth. How many Senators are worth more than Mc Cain’s flippant 5 million. I bet most. How many have more than 4 or more than 7? Somewhere Putin is laughing in his Vodka, hoping these rookie Dems win……… he would have the old Soviet put back together before lunch!

Comment by Matt In Portland

Senator Obama’s comments telegraph who his VP will not be. The Clinton’s earned $108 million since leaving office. Either Senator Obama has not selected her as his running mate, or he is going to look very foolish in a few days.

Likewise, no John Kerry on the ticket as an outside shot.

Comment by Billy

Who cares, there is only one house I care about and it is the Whitehouse, and I dont wont to see a racists self consumed two faced punk that has accomlished nothing in his life other than pull the wool over leftwing nutcases to live in that house.

Comment by pesca

Good job Slarrow, clearly the recent drop in oil prices can be credited to Bush, and not due to the fact that demand for gas in the U.S. has dropped so significantly. Speculators are really anticipating that 5% decrease in American oil consumption in 2026.

Also, anyone who has actually bothered to read the facts on the Born Alive issue, would realize just inane and off the mark your comments are. Granted, to understand that you would actually have to READ the facts, and that would make you an elitist, so I understand.

p.s. there are no private beaches in Hawaii… Has McCain, ever been to a public beach?

Comment by The Monopoly Guy

I dare say McCain is a Fool! Does the scalawag not realize that after your fourth house, tis time to build hotels? I shake my monocle at him!

Comment by Older White Woman

We owe McCain our love and respect for his military service. However, I love my grandchildren and this country too much to allow McCain in the White House.

A MD from Chesterton, Indiana brings up a critical point about McCain’s ability to govern:
“As a psychiatrist, I find the most troubling void in McCain’s personal story, THE ABSENCE OF RESULTS FROM HIS VARIOUS NEURO-PSYCHIATRIC-EVALUATIONS. A man who demonstrates suggestive behaviors consistent with both Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (episodic, violent outbursts) and early dementia (multiple slips and errors of fact, flat, unmodulated speech, excessive reliance on teleprompters), McCAIN’S REFUSAL TO RELEASE THE RESULTS OF THESE EVALUATIONS RAISES THE SERIOUS POSSIBILITY THAT HE IS CONCEALING SIGNIFICANT MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL DYSFUNCTION. While in general, there is an important right to privacy that must ordinarily be respected with all patients, the fact that this particular patient has chosen to run for the presidency makes it imperative that these records become available.”

Comment by T Black

This argument over who is richer doesn’t matter. Being rich does not mean being out of touch. It means you know how to make money. That is a quality we should want in a President. If we vote for a man that, for example, bankrupt an oil company, we might end up with a $490m deficit. Oh wait…

Okay libs here is one you can answer for me. When questioned by Rick Warren about who would Obamamama look for advice, one of his lame answers (other than my grandmommy) was Sen Teddy “Have a drink and a kill a girl” Kennedy. How many homes does that dude own? If you want to throw the “how many homes” stone than look at your best buddy Kennedy first.

BUT WAIT (the libs are just rattling their teeth right now) OBAMA DOESN’T OWN THOSE HOUSES!

So what? This again shows Obamamama’s clear lack of cogent judgement. Let’s follow this to its conclusion.

1. Tony Rezko – fellon
2. Jeremiah Wright – racist, bigot and anti-American
3. Bernette Doran and William Ayers – terrorists
4. Teddy Kennedy – a girl died in his care. He has many homes that Obama says to McCain is offensive (if asked Kennedy would have no clue as to how many residences he owns)
5. Father Phleger – plain stupid/hates women (or is it just Hillary?)
6. Nadhami Auchi – former bagman to the other Hussein in Iraq.
7. Louis Farrakhan – need we say more (is the mothership here at last?)
8. Rashid Khaladi – direct ties with the PLO
9. His brother Roy – a radical Muslim kook.

Pretty neat, eh? You judge a man by the company he keeps and his company are whack jobs.

I WANT ANOTHER 8 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!

Gov Kaine and Mark Warner should apologize to the folks of Virginia for the inept way they have managed the Commonwealth of Virginia. Kaine says that the morgage meltdown is an example of how the Republicans have messed things up, well I seem to remember it is Kaine and Warners names that are on the largest tax increases in the Commonwealth of Virginia and it was Kaine who wanted to raise gas taxes during the $4 a gallon times. It was only the Republican house of delegates that kept that from becoming law. YEA the two state democrates and the one running for Federal office are just the bomb..

Let me ask something here, at what point in our History did it become a crime to own property or to be wealthy?

Or let me ask how many houses does John Kerry have? Or how about Al Gore. Nah that doesnt matter either because they are Democrats.

Comment by Jaydilla

No one is saying it is a crime to be rich or own many homes. A pattern is emerging here. Sen. McCain makes serious public errors: Pakistan borders Iraq, Sunnui Miltias are aligned with Iran, and not knowing how many houses he has. The retort is always the same yeah but Obama is worse. Going to that well too many times will sink Sen. McCain’s campaign.

As far as Comments by Connie; you want to throw Bush a parade because the dow went up over 11,000? When Bill Clinton took office iin 1992 it WAS BELOW 4,000 and over 11,000 by 2000. It went up 175 % in eight years but you think Bush should gety acclodes for it increasing 10% at its height during his administration. Also when Jeb was governor of Florida W was against drilling. Now that his brother is out of office in Florida he is for it. Not to mention the original Offshore drilling ban executive order was signed by that liberal George H.W. Bush. Your whining that this is all Pelosi’s fault is ridiculous.

Comment by Skip Parks

Women, children, typical white grandmothers, and church groups all over America are organizing bake sales in thier neighborhoods, at their schools and churchs to help raise money for the Obama
Family Housing Fund. It seems that the Obama Family only has one house to their name and the McCains have seven, in an effort to help the Obama’s purchase six more houses to at least level the playing field.

It seems that Tony Rezco, the financier of the Obama’s first and only home is up to his neck in legal trouble and can no longer help the Obama’s purchase any more homes, also the Obama’s have no more extra money of their own to buy houses with, as they gave as much of their money as they could to Reverend Jeremiah Wright to help him purchase his estate on the golf Course just outside of Chicago. The Obama’s of course would like to purchase a seventh home to put them in the lead over the home ownership controversy with the McCains at a whopping eight houses for the Obama’s. If you would like to help with this effort, donate cupcakes, cookies or something or even join in
this bake sale, please go to www (DOT) bakemehomesweetObama (DOT) org and fill out the
form on the contact page.

Comment by Sigmond

Obama thinks it is unfair for someone to own more than one home valued over a million dollars. He also thinks it is unfair that Mrs. McCain owns investment properties. Obama hasn’t commented yet if he thinks it is unfair of Kerry or Dianne Feinstein, who live in $20 million plus homes with servants.

Comment by Ret AF

Good comments Connie, notice how only 2 people questioned you on the facts in your comments? That is the dem way, ignore the facts and just ramble-on about nothing.
Now to add some more to this comment: Yes the economy did take off under Clinton, was it because of anything he did? No! Ever hear of the internet bubble? The market would have taken off like it did under any President as long as they didn’t mess with things and let it roll which he did. Cudos for that to Bill. As for Bush ruining the economy, was the market just at record levels a few months ago? Yes! Now you may be asking youself what has happened over the past few months to make it come down. This year is what? That’s right an election year. And what happens during election years? All the poloticians start screaming how bad the economy is and the lovely media just keep pumping it out to the people and WHALA!! you have a poor economy. Now I ask all of you here bashing on Bush for an “economy in SHAMBLES” as one of you put it, to take a serious look at your situation. If you really are so far down in the dumps, why are you there? I will bet that the reason you are is because of your own inability to do something about your situation (quit buying all the unneeded junk, get a second job, learn to budget, etc). Instead of waiting for big brother Obama to come give you a welfare check, pick yourself up by the bootstraps and try to better yourself.
As for the rest of those complaining about how Bush ruined the economy over the last 8 years let me pose this to you: What happened during his terms in office? Can’t remember? Well let me remind you of the 2 BIGGEST events to happen to this country in a long, long time if ever. 9/11 and Katrina. These two events had a MAJOR effect on our nation and the economy. And if you were honest you would know that either of these would have crippled most nations, but not America. We took those blows, picked ourselves up and are still the most powerful nation in the world, and yes all of this took place under President Bush. I think he has done a pretty darn good job keeping this country going under the circumstances. But none of you haters will give the guy a fair shake because he is not giving you the hand outs so you can sit on your butts and do nothing.
Sorry this was so long, but I am so tired of seeing all the hate and non-important issues being spewed here. To clarify I am not just a Republican/Conservative, I vote for the best person for the job Repub, Dem or Ind. I may lean more right, but I judge the person by there values and ideas not their party.
Thank You and God Bless America

Like George W. Bush, McCain is a crazy old man and unfit for command.

Where Bush is a stuttering imbecile and a draft dodging Ivy League wimp, McCain is a seriously slow, confused and weird geezer. McCain is 71. My dad is 71 and we won’t let him drive after dark.

This issue of not knowing how many houses has only two potential explanations. First is that the McCains own too many properties to keep track of. Second is that McCain can’t keep small numbers of important things (real property) straigth. His Campaign cannot dance around either issue.

In the first case he is rich, out of touch and elitist. In the second case, he lacks precisely the most important skill needed by a chief executive: the ability to keep multiple issues straight WITHOUT passing the buck to his staff.

If wealth (personal or that of a spouse) is a valid issue to use against John Kerry and the Kennedys then it should be a valid issue to use with John McCain.

Comment by Barbara Bentley

Anyone can own as many houses/homes as they can afford….as long as they acquire them honestly. That is not what defines their ability to govern. Concern for all the citizens…even the ones who have not been born, concerns me. If you don’t have concern for the helpless before they are born, where will your concern be for the helpless after they are born. If people become helpless from illness, injury, or old age, does that make them prospects to be thrown away the way unborn children are thrown away? That concerns me. I have seen changes in the economy since President Bush took office, but it has not been all bad. Emlployment has increased, the stock market has done well as well as having had some bad days…but that is the way the stock market is and always has been. A lot of the stock market woes today are being fueled by the price of gas. Thanks to the unwillingness of Congress to allow drilling and using our own resources. We should be useing all of our resources..coal, gas, water, wind, nuclear. Having a few Congress people acting as tyrants is the biggest problem this country has.

You obama freaks are not as smart as you have been led to believe! First of all, going to college these days doesnt make you smarter, it just indoctrinates you. The democraps have engineered the economic troubles we face,so that they have a chance to get their loser savior into the white house. They tried to undermine our military, and obuma specifically voted against putting more armor on our troop carrying vehicles, he is directly responsible for more deaths than just botched abortion babies! If the dumbocrats hadnt sabotaged our economy, barry wouldnt even have a platform to run on! When asked if evil exists at the Saddleback forum, a truthful answer would have been yes, in the form of borak, nancy, and harry along with some other democrat politicians. Democrats are so dumb that they dont even realise they are dumb!

To Chris:
Yes, historically war tends to be good for an economy, but only under definite conditions. There is really only so far that that can go as well. The increased production will help for short bursts but it will not be sustained. The diversion of the workforce from their normal line of work to either being factory workers or soldiers undeniably hurts professions that have nothing to do with wartime needs.

Also, a big reason why wars usually help is because they employ people. The sheer numbers of men recruited to the world wars gave jobs to many people who didn’t have jos before. Unfortunately in modern warfare, money is funneled into a few expensive things like airplanes, rockets, tanks, etc. And all state of the art no less. This war has seen huge numbers of private contractors that are much farther out of reach and control than the army.

If this war were helping the economy in any substantial or sutainable way, it would have happened by now. Not only by now, but even before the fuel prices jumped and wreaked havok with our ability to determine causes and effects with fuel effecting the economy.

Dems are hypocrites –

Do they remember that there last nominee was John Kerry — whose wife is Teresa Heinz is worth over $750 million? Kerry and Heinz have 5 homes worth collectively $30 million — a six-floor, $7 million townhome in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood, a $9 million ocean-front home on Nantucket, a $5 million ski retreat in Idaho, a $4 million estate in Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania near the Heinz family’s home base of Pittsburgh, and a $5 million home in Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown neighborhood. The couple also owns a $1 million yacht and a $35 million Gulf Stream Jet; it should be noted that the Heinz family owns most of these properties.

John McCain is no more disqualified to serve as President by his wife Cindy’s wealth (less than 10% of Teresa Heinz) than John Kerry was.

And Teddy Kennedy — the prodigal son of the super-wealthy — needs to be real quiet. The Kennedy’s don’t have homes — they have compounds.
