Obama Airs “No Change” Ad on McCain-Palin, Rips Bush on Economy That’s “beginning” to Improve

DUBLIN, Ohio – Barack Obama’s campaign this morning released this new TV ad, airing on national cable, about the John McCain-Sarah Pailin ticket.

Watch it here:

http://my.barackobama.com/nochange_ad

Moments later, John McCain spokesman, Ben Porritt, released this response:

“Barack Obama has proposed job killing tax increases while our economy is already hurting and his campaign launched dismissive political attacks against Governor Palin’s executive state house and small town experience, despite his own lack of either. Americans know that’s ‘more of the same’ bad judgment from Barack Obama, and it proves he’s just not ready to lead.”

While Obama and running mate Joe Biden make their way here to Dublin-Coffman High School for tonight’s rally, his campaign also responded to President Bush’s Saturday radio address. Obama’s team attacked Bush’s pre-Labor Day assertion that the U.S. economy is “beginning to improve.”

Here is the relevant excerpt from Bush’s radio address:

“The American workforce continues to be the marvel of the world. Yet many working families have been weathering tough economic times. There are families across our country struggling to make ends meet. There is an understandable concern about the high price of gas and food. And many Americans are worried about the health of our housing and job markets.

I share these concerns about our economy. Yet there have been some recent signs that our economy is beginning to improve. While the housing market is continuing to experience difficulty, the decline in home sales has leveled off recently, and sales are rising in some parts of the country. Orders for some durable goods, such as business equipment, are rising. And earlier this week we received a report that America’s economy grew in the second quarter at an annual rate of 3.3 percent – surprising analysts who were predicting an economic recession.

These welcome signs indicate that the economic stimulus package that I signed earlier this year is having its intended effect. The growth package will return more than $150 billion back to American families and businesses this year. Many Americans who received tax rebates are spending them. Businesses are taking advantage of tax incentives to purchase new equipment this year. And there are signs that the stimulus package will continue to have a beneficial impact on the economy in the second half of the year. “

To listen to the full Bush radio address click here: www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2008/08/20080830.a.mp3

Here’s the reaction, with economic data supplied as backup, from Obama spokesman Bill Burton:

“Days after John McCain declared that ‘the fundamentals of the economy are strong,’ President Bush used his Labor Day radio address to say that our economy is ‘beginning to improve.’ But for the Americans who’ve seen their jobs disappear, their personal incomes plunge, their home values plummet, and gas prices skyrocket, nothing could be further from the truth. When it comes to being out of touch with what middle-class Americans are going through, George Bush and John McCain are two of a kind. No wonder they’re meeting in the Twin Cities this week.”

CAMPAIGN BACKGROUND DATA ATTACHED TO BURTON STATEMENT:

· The economy has lost jobs each of the last seven months, and over the past seven and a half years job growth has been weaker than in any economic expansion on record. In July, the economy lost another 51,000 jobs, bringing the total jobs lost this year to 463,000. Over the past seven and a half years under President Bush, job growth has been weaker than in any economic expansion on record. [Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2008]

· Families have lost an entire decade worth of raises, as real weekly earnings fell below their August 1998 level. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported this month that weekly wages adjusted for inflation were $272.85 in July 2008. That is below the $273.54 level of real weekly wages in August, 1998. That means that, because of stagnant wages and growing inflation, workers are making less now than they were a decade ago. [Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2008].

· Working-age households have lost more than $2,000 under President Bush. The Census Department reported this week that real incomes for working families fell from $58,555 in 2000 to $56,545 in 2007 – a decline of $2010. This is the first economic expansion on record where household incomes have fallen in real terms. [U.S. Census, 2008]

. Inflation reached a 17-year high. This month we learned that prices jumped 5.6 percent in July over a year earlier. That is the largest year-over-year increase in inflation since January 1991, when the economy was in recession. [Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2008].

· Housing prices have fallen a record 15.9 percent over the past year. While President suggested that the housing market is looking up, just this last week the respected S&P/Case-Shiller index showed that housing prices in 20 major metropolitan areas fell 15.9 percent over the past year, the largest one year drop on record. More than 2.5 million homeowners are expected to face foreclosure this year – an average of 7,000 per day.

Obama’s convention speech focused intensely on current economic anxieties and what he intended to do about them. At pre-convention town halls earlier this week and at last night’s rally in Beaver, Pa., one statistic stood out when drawing applause and knowing nods from the audience: the comparison of household income gains in the Clinton years and the declines in the Bush years (see item above).

On the last night of the convention, I bumped into former Clinton Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers. The revised second quarter growth numbers had just been released and I asked him if he thought they indicated a stronger economy than other data suggested. Summers said he would need to analyze the underlying data on exports and see if other non-export sectors of the economy had grown and, if so, by how much.

As to the politics of the economy, Summers said it would be extremely difficult for Republicans to argue the economy had turned around or wasn’t as bad as most people imagined. He said the growth numbers obscured deeper human anxiety about inflation, health care, energy and college tuition costs.

The Obama campaign believes this to its core. As I’ve posted here before, the two most important numbers in any state or national poll for team Obama are these: the advantage over McCain in who can improve the economy and the advantage over McCain in who is viewed as “an agent of change.”

With Bush’s radio address, Obama will no doubt add another layer of criticism to the Republican portrait of the economy. During the GOP convention, Obama and his Democratic allies will push the “out of touch” message on the economy, believing that to be the best antidote to GOP charges that Obama is an “elitist” or “celebrity.”

Speaking of polls, today’s Gallup National Daily tracking survey has Obama holding an eight-point lead. Here is the link: www.gallup.com/poll/109900/Gallup-Daily-Obama-Continues-Lead-49-41.aspx

Obama is really good at distortions, telling half-truths, and bald faced lies.

Comment by Raffi

This is the most irresponsible pick I have ever seen, McCain only cares about getting elected and not about the future of America. Let me ask you this, what happens if McCain can no longer continue his duties as President. We are going to hand the office of the Presidency to Palin? How does she measure to Vladimir Putin of Russia, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, Iran’s president, and North Korea? Stop comparing her to Hilary Clinton, they are completely different. I am die-hard republican, but with this irresponsible pick I will vote for obama-biden ticket. I will not risk this counties national security to an inexperienced governor.

Comment by Jim Baio

The “Experience Issue” is shaping up to be a key issue in this campaign. People need to remember that experience COULD be an issue if the Republicans win only if McCain becomes unable to serve. However, if the Democrats win, experience WILL be an issue from “Day One.” Obama’s (the top of the ticket) experience as a Senator is much less than Palin’s (bottom of the ticket) experience as a Governor.

Comment by Democrat for Palin

Governor Palin has just as much star power and charisma as Obama. Also, she was a Governor who ran a state and made huge reforms. Obama has never run a state.

The Nancy Pelosi’s of the world were against Hillary. Now, they are against Sarah? Women of America need to step up or stay down.

Gov. Palin is the only person in this race that the average american can relate with. Every candidate that runs for anything in this country are richer than rich. Finally someone who is like me.Hockey mom, fishes, hunts and probably has a mortgage to worry about. Maybe she can get all the corrupt, lobbiest bought stiffs out of Washington D.C. I was going to vote Democrat just because…but I am now voting Republican. GO SARAH

Tony,
If Obama/Biden win I’m moving to Alaska! I am a lifelong Republican that has served for 23 years in the USMC… I am anti-abortion and pro NRA… McCain/Palin 2008. If I could I would be in the states campaigning for them! I am doing what I can while I am serving in Iraq and can’t wait until they are in the White House! Good luck but you will rue the day that an Obama/Biden ticket wins… Major keep up the great work!

Obama is a fraud. Bigger gov’t never works, it only helps those who don’t work.
Unicorn skyies and rainbow fields are not reality and empty speeches are for the empty minded. O.H.B. is like Milli Vanilli.

How can Obama say he is for change. He is no different than all the black racist out there who hate white people. He attended a racist church for 20 years and would still be attending if the Rev.Wright’s hate filled rant against whites never hit the airwaves. He is using the same tactics with McCain that he used with Hillary, beat them down in the media. Why don’t he tell us what he will do instead of scoffing at everything the Repulicans say. I hope he gets buried in the election. P.S. Tell him to pay his parking tickets

Comment by Adakin Valorem

Having just watched the new advert from the Obama campaign, I just wonder if senators Obama, Biden or McCain ever had to make a payroll or, for that matter, ever create any jobs using their own investment capital!

Gov Palin has done exactly that, started and run her own business, hired people and made payroll.

I can’t wait until Biden and “The Barracuda” duke it out in a debate!

Comment by Victoria

Biden’s face told the whole story when Obama congratulated Palin on her nomination. He looked so dejected. Palin has more experience in her 2 years as governor in Alaska than Obama, McCain and Biden combined. She even started a savings account for the State of Alaska, something the liberals have no concept about. Saving??? Hell, the Dems are salivating at the thought of spending hard-earned middle-class $$$. Maybe now, McCain/Palin will get our energy under control and drill Alaska and elsewhere. All that has to be done is to DRILL it through Pelosi’s hard skull and the Dems that this is what America wants. Prices on EVERYTHING is through the roof because of our oil prices. HOORAY for the Republicans. Obama is just a 2-bit South Side organizer who associates with terrorists. What said it all is when Obama goes, “The best sound in the world is Arabic prayers at sunset.” Good God. This guy attended mosque prayers with his stepdad and is indoctrinated. I, for one, will not vote for a Marxist-loving, Commie-leaning Muslim robot that Obama is. Wake up America!!!

IT SAYS VOLUMNS THAT OBAMA IS RUNNING SCARED NOW THAT McCAIN HAS A WOMAN ON HIS TICKET, AND HE ALSO KNOWS THAT HE MADE A BIG MISTAKE WHEN HE DID NOT PUT MICHELLE’S DIFFERENCE WITH HILLARY ASIDE, AND PICK HILLARY FOR VP. ALL THE CORRUPTION IN THE PRIMARY WILL COME OUT, BEFORE NOV. AND THEN OBAMA WILL BE THRASHED, PEOPLE WILL FIND OUT JUST WHAT HE IS AND WHAT HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN, BUT HAS TRIED TO HIDE IT. NO OBAMA FOR ME. I WILL BE VOTING FOR REPUBLICAN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE, AND NOTHING HE OR THE CORRUPT DEMOCRAT PARTY CAN SAY TO ME TO CHANGE MY MIND. GO McCAIN AND PALIN!!!!!!!!!ALL THE WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE!

obama “the hope candidate” running negative ad …..what happened to hope…

Comment by Bill

The weakness of this ad reflects the weakness of the Democrat ticket. The selection of Sarah Palin was a brilliant choice, since she really brings a refreshing breath of fresh air to this campaign. A genuine, bright, articulate woman who has already shown herself to be an able and honest executive and one who comes from a real working class background. Why not settle the election by a one-on-one basketball game between Palin and Obama? My $$ are on Palin.

Comment by Ana Ward in Alabama

I am republican and I am supporting the republican ticket of McCain/Palin. I am a stronger person now because I had to endure alot in life. I do think Gov. Palin will bring a strong message of endurance to women and men who had to work hard. I do not expect anything for free. I pay my due taxes. I don’t owe anything to the Government and the Gov. doesn’t owe me anything. I work for what I have.

Comment by KIRBY

If you are thinking of supporting Obama, you may want to think twice. Take a look at where this country has gone in the last two years. It has gone south, it is not because of George Bush, it’s because we have had democrates in control of this Government for the last two years. It’s up to the majority to keep this country in check. They ” the democrates ” have not done that!. What they have done is try to make the republicans look the blame and look like the bad guys. The democrates talk about how great of a job Bill Clinton done while in office. Bill Clinton was not making and voting on the legislation at hand. The republicans were. The republicans were the majority during Clintons term. Here they are trying to take credit for what the republicans have done for our country and economy. The majority now,has done nothing. While the republicans are trying to hammer out a bill for energy and other things that needs attention, the democrates go home for 5 weeks!. That proves to me that they are not doing thier job. They are put there to work for we the people and they are not. They are working for themselves and thier party! It’s time for real change, change the majority from democrates to republicans and we will see gas prices go down, spending will go down. Bills will start getting voted on. The democrates will not let any bill the republicans implement get voted on. THAT IS ASHAME.

Comment by Monica

I am a woman Republican but deeply disappointed with McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin. She appears eloquent and bright but this doesn’t qualify her to become heartbeats away from the presidency. I am also a pro-choice voter and might have voted for McCain had he chosen someone like Tom Ridge, but to pick someone so far to the right will backfire on McCain. I want to see a woman on his ticket but a qualified one. I feel Palin is not and many of my friends feel the same. McCain lost our vote. We will be voting for Obama who seems less rash and less risky in his choices. He is really wise, while McCain proves every day that he is really capricious with bad judgment.

This will make you think. If not, keep your blinders on…
George Bush has been in office for 7-1/2 years.
The first six the economy was fine.
1)Consumer confidence was good.
2)Regular gasoline sold for around 2.19 per gallon.
3)The unemployment rate was 4.5%.
4)The DOW JONES hit a record high of 14,000 +.
5)Americans were buying new cars, taking cruises, living the good life.
But, Americans wanted change.
So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic congress & yep
We got CHANGE alright.
In the past year and half
1) consumer confidence has plummeted.
2) Gas is 3.60 + per gallon.
3) Unemployment is up to 5.7%.
4) Americans’ home equity has dropped by 12 trillion dollars.
5) The DOW JONES is on a downward slide at around 12,500.
6) 2.5 trillion dollars has evaporated from their investment portfolios.
Yep, in 2006 Americans voted for CHANGE. And we sure got it!!
Now, Obama, the Democratic nominee for president says he’s really gonna give us CHANGE!! How much more CHANGE do you think we can stand before America is brought to it’s knees???

Obama’s ad is far too kind.

Conservatives have always hated Hillary because she wanted to pursue a career in law rather than serve “tea and cookies.” Here we have Sarah Palin, who is praised for being a mother of five, including a baby with Down Syndrome. Where are those fundamentalists now when this woman is choosing to pursue fame and fortune instead of putting “family values” first? Just more hypocrisy.

Moose meat versus arugula is the least of our worries. Palin is anti-science. She does not believe in evolution, or climate change, or development of natural gas and other clean fuels, and most of all she does not believe in women’s rights. Just more anti-intellectualism, pro-Big Oil, anti-privacy and individual rights.

There is a reason the prior presidential hopeful Lindsey Graham is not, and probably never will run for President — the TERRI SCHIAVO intervention. That’s when Americans woke up to the fact that religious radicals had taken over the Republican Party. Palin would shake things up all right. Her pro-life position make Graham and others in her party look like liberals. Back to the Dark Ages we’d go.

As for McCain, he cheated on his wife Carol and left her for Cindy. He tried to cover up Cindy’s drug addiction and illegal procurement of drugs. He cost the tax payers a chunk of change because of his relations with Charles Keating (The Keating Five scandal). Just more Jack Abramoff, to Tom DeLay, to Ted Stevens (uh, hem).

After eight miserable years of Bush/Cheney, you’d think Americans would expect higher qualifications for the highest office in the land. Like Bush with a C-grade average and failed business ventures, neither McCain or Palin have impressive educations or career achievemments. Just more Harriot Myers, Monica Goodling, etc.

And most of all, let’s keep in mind that not only did McCain vote with Bush 90% of the time, he is to the right of Bush when it comes to war-mongering. “Four More Wars!” Drop McCain Not Bombs”

Mccain lost my vote – totally out of touch. He broke his promise of America First (politics 2nd) with his joke of VP pick. So many more qualified overlooked & at 72, 2 bouts of cancer, 5 1/2 yrs of torture – the VP pick was his most important decision – and it was pure politics

Comment by Just 1 of 18M

Don’t you find it very disturbing that within 24 hrs we know more Governor Palin’s executive level accomplishments than Senators Obama/Biden legislative accomplishments? Why is that?

We know that Biden has 30+ years in the senate and is friendly with commuter train conductors but what has he championed in Washington that helped to “change the game”?

We know that Obama chose not to go to Wallstreet but decided to return to his a Chicago neighborhood and support local non-profits. If this is considered a change the game accomplishment he should be running for the President of the United Way not the President of the United States. As for the experience issue Obama can hardly claim the last 20 months on the campaign trail as part of his legislative “national” experience.

Additionally, it should be noted that if McCain voted 90% like Bush, the records also indicate that Obama voted 90% like McCain. How does this voting record validate Obama’s claim that the US needs someone to lead them to a “road to change”? Is America really that off track?

If Obama wants my attention or any of my fellow critical thinking women colleagues, he quickly needs to outline his change the game plan and provide concrete specifics on how he will deliver.

Senator Biden was chiding President Bush and John Mccain at a rally I saw today about their comments saying the fundamentals of the economy are strong. The truth is President Bush and Senator Mccain are right. We are fighting wars in two different countries we have high energy costs and yet the growth is still there. We have had a mortgage crisis that is bad but still we carry on. Obama and Biden and their talking heads would make you think the country is coming to an end unless you elect them.If the underlying economy wasn’t strong we would be in one heck of a mess. The housing market will come back as it always does and more families would be realizing the American dream for the first time. Fuel prices will come down and inflation will soon disappear. The economy will continue to grow through this election and I hope the american people realize we are alot better off than Obama and Biden would like you to believe.

Your journalism is equal to The Enquirer. Why are you not a fair and balanced news team? Why are your comments so one sided? What are you so afraid of? Always negative comments towards the Democrats. You may want to acquire some journalism skills from CNN or MSNBC. These guys seem more professional than your team. Rarely (whenever I read your views) do I ever read anything positive that you have written about the Democrats, especially Sen Obama. Why is that?

Obama has promised more dollars for new programs than is possible without major tax increases on all of us working class folks who already pay for all the wasteful spending going on in Washington. I’m not a die hard Republican, but I’m convinced that McCain is not politics as usual and that he will lead change that will be good for America.

Comment by Bev

The unemployment rate remains the same at about 5.7% which is envied throughout other countries.
Out growth was 3.3%. This is because of exports which were produced by small companies which employ 70% of the American workforce. When I ask anyone if they are better off today than 4 years ago they reply they are better off. So why all the cynical attitude? A lot of it is produced by the media and by the Democratic Party to play on people’s emotions. The housing crisis was created by greedy people in the housing market not our government. Our government (our tax dollars) had to come to the rescue of companies that are in business to make a profit, but if we didn’t it would of been a worse mess than it is. The dollar is weak because of trade deficits. We need to produce more oil here instead of buying it from overseas. John McCain supports small business and our country.

Maybe it’s caused from the 9/11 attacks and the overspending during the Clinton years. I’m not saying that there aren’t problems, but things go in cycles. Everything was inflated during the 90’s and it finally came to a head. Let’s be realistic, you reap what you sow. As for people losing homes – the market was over inflated, people took mortgages they knew they couldn’t afford, yes, there were predatory lenders. Is this the fault of GWB alone or our government who weren’t regulating the industries. Sorry – I don’t buy it. Congress, Wall St., the markets – corporations – it was all about greed. So people, – why don’t you start at the bottom and weed out the deadwood at the local and state levels and then move up to the Congressional levels. You do have the power. Just stop getting emotional over the media, and marketing hype.

I agree with Tony except that Obama is still a very bad choice. I am not going to vote for Obama but I am not sure that I will vote for Senator McCain. I can’t believe that he sold out the Republican Party and I am afraid that he handed Obama the presidency on a silver platter. Gov Palin may be a nice lady but what America needs is a person who has national creditentials and can be ready to step in incase Senator McCain becomes sick. Being a Mayor for 9 yrs and a Gov for less than 2 years does not qualify. What was McCain thinking? Right now, in my opinion, he has lost the South and the Democrats are having a field day and laughing at the GOP.
I am just a disgusted Republican Southerner. Who is he going to get for his cabinet – city councilmen or county commissioners?

Comment by Barbara Young

I agree with Tony. McCain’s decision making has always scared me, especially when we have seen that governing “from the gut” as Bush did unfortunately only produced confidence busting results. When McCain stressed that we need a strong ticket, then selects a partner with a weak resume in many major matters of national and international concern what kind of message does this send to the rest of the Republican party, the Democrats, the country and the world?
Cutting taxes is vital, but as the economic policies of Palin become better known, will it help or hurt? From my understanding Palin cut property taxes (good!), but to do it she raised sales tax! Is this the kind of economic policies that make us better off or proud?

Obama looks good to me too because he seems thoughtful, studies matters and doesn’t go off on some maverick decision for the sake of making a maverick decision. Isn’t that we many of us have had problems with McCain in the first place?

To the bloggers that say Palin should stay home and take care of her baby, I say that its too bad you dont treat women with the same respect that you treat black men. President Bush has done a lot more for our country than people give him credit for! It is the democratic congress that has been sabotaging our economy.

The Republican Vice Presidential Nominee has more foreign policy experience than the Democratic Party’s Presidential Nominee and overall Governor Sarah Palin has 13 years of elected public office experience to Senator Obama’s 9 years. Governor Palin has dealt with Russia over water fishing rights off Alaska and was in Iraq visiting the Alaska’s National Guard fighting their a year before Senator Obama’s first trip last month. I also believe she was in Afghanistan during the same trip. She has also traveled to Europe and South of the Rio Grand, which Senator Obama has never been. I think Governor Palin is better qualified to be Commander in Chief than Senator Obama’s 2 years of present votes in the US senate.

Why do the biased media, Obama and the rest of the deceiving democrats not admit that the democrats are responsible for the sagging economy?

Comment by MICA

Its always nice to read the posts republicans write cause it just makes democrats look so good. The fact that anyone can say Palin is ready for this position by virtue of her 5 kids, the proximity of Alaska to Russia and her less than two years as Governor of a state with more bears than people makes me understand why temporary insanity defenses are on the rise. Palin was a mayor of a town with less than 8,000 people before she became mayor for Chrissake!!!!!! 8.000 PEOPLE!!!!!! thats less people than the smallest community college in LA.
Aside from making serious descisons about how much to spend on 4th of July fireworks and farmers fairs what could she possibly claim prepared her? And then of course Alaska is so close to Russia so her credentials on foreign relations should not be questioned? Even George Bush will call this stupid.
And then less than 2 years as governor of Alaska, Alaska the most remote state in the country? Ridiculous. This is just a lousy political ploy to try and get some of the women Hilary carried and has nothing to do with who is ready to lead if Mccain doesn’t finish his term( a very big concern here). I don’t like the republicans but there are many more Female or male candidates more prepared.
Real quick Obama was in the illonois senate for 7 years and 4 years as state senator anyone that can’t see the difference should consider spending more time researching government than writing nonsense.
I was thinking about voting for Obama because he was the best candidate now i have to vote for him cause i am scared of the other ticket.

PS
Luis not only do you strike me as someone that is incapable of lateral thinking but also a liar. To say palin has foreign experience because she dealt with some fishermen(not Russia as you state) over fishing rights would be laughable if it wasn’t sad to read. Luis, Ben Affleck, Tom Hanks, Joan Rivers and a whole bunch of celebrities also went to Iraq to have their picture taken. I don’t see them claiming any particular credentials.
As for your comment that palin has been to Europe and south of the Rio grande and Obama has not; you are a Liar or just confused either way a long hiatus from posting is in order. Obama is one of the most traveled nominees ever not to mention being the most culturally astute as well( raised in Hawaii& indonesia)
Get your facts before you post buddy

“Bigger gov’t never works”????? That is a funny thing to say by “AVERAGE WHITE GUY”.

Seems the government got bigger under George Bush according to the amount of money they are spending (think about all those no-bid private contractors). Over $23,000 per household, which is a sharp rise over that the last president.

Federal Spending chart

We need to throw out all politicians and start over.
